Philbin's integrity and attention to detail saved his job, as per Ross. That's all well and good but, I have to question his ego. IMO, he does not want any players who talk and/or lead other players, with him having control over everything.

In that regard, Cog, strip club meetings, and Long, Bush, and Dansby did not fit his plans. No one should talk, he is the one who has to be in complete control.

Is that gonna work in today's NFL?

Heck, even Belli had a serial killer on his team. I'm not sure Philbin is Madden, but is he Sporano? I think he has flaws but still want to see what he has with Ireland on the unemployment line and a new OC. The team balled at times amid all kinds of daily negative stuff and of course they collapsed when they needed a win. Maybe he'll live and learn, possibly adjust in the likes of Tom Coughlin, and lead us to the promised land. If not, he'll be another Mr. Irrevelevant and another will get a chance in 15.

I don't think it's ego, I think it's his way or the highway. Time will tell.

IS PHILBINS EGO A PROBLEM?

no. and what GOOD coach doesnt have an ego? you really think philbins supposed ego is bigger than bill parcells? jimmy johnson? don shula? vince lombardi, chucky?

all these coaches [and there are many more] have MASSIVE EGO'S! there winners. superbowl winners!! most highly successful people in any facetn of life have high ego's. competition and ego go hand in hand.

all this MISGUIDED, UNWARRENTED, REDICULOUS piling on of philbin is pathetic.

No it's not going to work. We can't consistently win with choir boys AND no elite quarterback. I'm a tannehill fan but not a philbin fan. I'm still Trying to figure out philbins strengths? Someone please state philbins strengths

I guess the fact that the Dolphins tried to resign Long and wanted to keep Dansby but not at his then pay scale means nothing. Philbin wasn't upset that the players talked. He was upset that they took their complaints to the media instead of keeping it in house.

I see him as a good administrator. I don't see him as a good leader. If he doesn't understand the difference and doesn't coach to his strengths, his ego will be a major detriment as a HC.

Based purely on some observations from the outside, to me it appears this is the case.

Jake Long leaving the Dolphins had nothing to do with 'speaking his mind.' It had to do with the Rams offering a bit more money, plus I think Jake felt insulted by the way we treated him. Jake was certainly not a troublemaker or anything. I don't even understand how you can think that we 'dumped' Jake Long for that when his play was clearly in decline, he was always hurt, and we still offered him about 8 million dollars a year.

I don't think Reggie's vocal leadership was an issue either. I'd actually guess that the staff loved Reggie's work ethic and the example tried to set. The reasons why I think we let Reggie go: 1. Philbin wants north/south runners and hates fumblers. 2. Jeff Ireland believed in Miller/Thomas. 3. We didn't use him as a receiver, he's not great at blitz pickups, and we don't run the ball anyway. In other words, we just didn't feel like putting his great skillset to use so there was no reason to offer him four million dollars a year when we could get the same marginal production and blitz pickups out of Lamar Miller.

As for Dansby, we did ask him to take a pay cut and only cut him when he refused. That said, he was absolutely shipped out for personality reasons. Guy showed up like 70 pounds overweight to camp one year and then 30 or so pounds the next year. He was insubordinate in public and --if you believe Richie's dad -- the players couldn't stand his attitude.

Our team has a lack of attitude on both offense and defense. No players that play with fire being coached by a guy with no fire.

I'm most dissatisfied with the obvious lack of adjustments during the losses. We had some big wins but the bad losses negate those. Waiting too long to address the Oline and play calling miscues (I'll be kind) are hard to swallow. I think he should have demanded some QB sneaks or something else when we failed to convert a third or fourth and inches way too many times. This is where I want that so called ego to come out. If you demand perfection in the locker room, demand perfection from your coaching staff. As I said previously, I can't wait to see his style develop in 15.

Philbin's personality pales in comparison with the coaches you mentioned here.

I doubt he'll lead us to any championships.

It's not ego. I think that he just likes well disciplined players and some like Dansby, Vontae Davis and Chad Johnson had difficulty with that.
I actually like that Miami is one of the better disciplined teams.

Philbin has an ego now? I thought he was a twit who was weak and only cared about picking up trash off the floor?

Who was the player Plilbin said he liked and that "He keeps his mouth shut." This was not a slip in attitude, he was likely joking. lol

I posed a question, and gave an opinion from what I have seen and read. I may well be wrong in his dislike of players who talk but, I do not believe that. I may be wrong on Joe wanting having an ego in wanting absolute control but, don't think so. JMO

Yeah, they got integrity and attention to detail. That did a whole lotta good in the last two disasters. Just me but, I think a guy like Cog, with no integrity or attention to detail, would have pumped up our team with nothing but emotion and a kick ass altitude of attitude. We have seen him do it.
