Tannehill was the only one I saw with the "potential" to be a leader, and quite honestly, I saw more out of Henne in the Indy game.

I once wante to give Wanny the benefit of the doubt till I realized he was just destroying our team one draft pick at a time, one bad move at a time. The guy had not much emotion and looked clueless on game day. He was just lucky to have some very good players on defense that JJ left in place for him. I don't want to put my faith on Philbin for 5 years. I have seen NOTHING that will lead me to believe that he's the right man for the job. I could be wrong and time will tell but he doesn't seem to get hs team ready to play. Evidence is that the offense did not score a TD in it's opening drive in the last 12 games in a row. I know Sherman was part of it but he wanted to keep Sherman. The team plays with no fire. The look flat all the time. The sense of urgency at all. They just seemed to be going thru the motions this past season. I ust want to know what it is that make some people on this board fee that he is such an amazing HC.

You dont even know what I think he is. What we were talking about is if Philbin has ever provided instruction to any players, which you deny. But instead of talking about that you went on rambling about how you used to dream big for the Fins, but now you've given up hope...or something like that....go cry me a ****ing river. :boohoo:

And you never provided even a shred of evidence that Philbin has provided in-depth instruction to players. There is no evidence to suggest he has other than your blind hope.

I really, really, really hope that was a case of refusing to move out of loyalty more than anything. The rumor I saw (before Sherman was even fired) was that Joe was really upset with some of Sherman's playcalls (probably the same ones that drove us mad here on FH), so maybe there's some reason to be optimistic that he didn't actually think Sherman was doing a great job. Which he wasn't.

No its not his ego....its just him all together. I initailaly thought he would make a great coach coming from a high powerd offensive packers team with a winning tradition and a good resume. At first his demeanor caught me off guard then I was thinking he reminds me of Dungy with his coaching from the sidelines. But when I see the product on the field and the reading from cue cards in the locker room that was pretty much it for me. I don't think he is right for us.
Actually, while I don't think that ego is the problem, this post has steered onto the a discussion of player leadership, which I think is a team issue. I do not see many strong leaders on the team. A previous poster listed Hartline, Tannehill, Grimes, Pouncey, Wake, Soliai...
I do see the leadership attributes in Hartline and he is one of the most articulate players in the NFL. Tannehill is probably more of a leader than we see the softly spoken kid who gives boring answers to nearly every question. He's confident in himself but he looks like a 17 year old about to go on his first date, with rubbers in his backpocket. I know he's 25 and married, etc but he he still looks extremely young. The departure of his mentor, Mike Sherman, will be significant.
Grimes is a terrific player, one of my favorites, but the actual DB leaders on the team appear to be Jimmy Wilson and Chris Clemmons. I know that many on here have a perverse dislike for Jimmy and I'm one of his very few fans, but when Jesse Agler and John Congemi asked who the DB leader on the team in a Finsider interview, they gave the answer. It's Jimmy. He comes into the nickel spot and tells the players what he sees in the Offense and where to go and he seems to delight in getting in the face of his competitors. His early stint in jail probably toughened him up.
The NFL network miked up Cam Wake in one of the latter games. He had a good game but what surprised me was that he was so quiet. We heard the crunch of his hits but he said very little. He is mature and a physical beast who leads by example, but is extremely quiet. To be honest, Odrick strikes me as the most articulate guy on the Defense and he is highly intelligent, but I doubt that he revs up his teammates like Ray Lewis.
The other leaders I see on the team will surprise some, but Brandon Fields, John Denney, Austin Spitler and Jason Trusnik all from Special Teams are mature. After a player made a silly mistake on Special Teams 2 seasons ago, the camera showed Fields clearly ripping him apart. After this I had no doubt whatsoever Brandon Fields is a natural leader.
After Jake Long scuttled off to tropical St Louis we were left with Pouncey and Incognito on the O-line. Richie tried a little too hard with his leadership duties and will probably be playing elsewhere in the future. He would look good as an Oakland Raider where he would be the natural hero of the Black Hole (and reunite with Tony Sparano). Pouncey has some natural leadership attributes, but his close friendship with Aaron Hernandez still scares the hell out of me. (You realize that he and his brother were reportedly Hernandez's closest friends on the Gator team).
But back to the leadership, I see very few natural leaders on the team and I think that we need to recruit someone. The best I see are Hartline, Jimmy Wilson, Fields, Pouncey and Jared Odrick. Tannehill is a leader in training, but when you see demonstrable sideline leadership like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees and even Philip Rivers display on their respective teams, we are a mile behind. Brady has the natural leadership to dominate everyone, including the referees. In the first game against New England up in Foxboro when we were well ahead and dominating everywhere, I saw Brady whipping them up on the sidelines and I have no doubt in my mind that he turned that game around. He almost pulled it off in the Miami game but for the last second heroics from Michael Thomas. Interesting to note that fringe Special Teamer, Jordan Kovacs was an outstanding natural team leader at Michigan. If he can continue to improve his contribution to make the team, he has the natural attributes that can't be taught (and you know that Stephen Ross recognized this).
Overall, we need to splash out and recruit at least one strong leader for the team. Preferably Offensive Line.

Lol please. Philbin is an excellent coach? Wtf has he done to be considered an excellent coach? Guy lost to Greg Schiano with a backup QB and 3rd string RB. Don't give me this crap about talent or whatever other excuses you want to make. Stop drinking the kool aid. Guy has done nothing as of yet.

the key to winning games is not a spit slobbering maniac, its a coach who can TEACH!! FROM HC TO POSITION COACHES. that why guys like billichek and landry raymond berry, bill walsh, tony dungy, etc... all were winners, because they could teach!! and the firey guys like shula and coughlin,etc...., if all they were was about yelling and screaching, they wouldnt have won a thing. those guys are all teachers, but, some just see the screaming banchee and think thats why they are successful.
philbin is an exellent coach who was handed a bust draft and free agency, a team that was WORSE than the year before in his rookie season. people are yaking now about "philbin not playing the draft pics" he was givin by wonder boy ireland. WHICH ONES? because all of them except two i think had SIGNIFICANT injuries coming in. including the 3rd overall choice by ireland who suffered from it ALL YEAR and they finally protected their investment by shutting him down. [a guy who shouldnt have been pic'd that high].
but, somehow, this all lands in philbins lap.
and lets not forget that his qb didnt have the second year the team thought he was going to have.
philbin didnt have a chance. in fact, the coached his arse off getting this awful team to 8-8 with the completely bust draft that medically couldnt play, no talent on the o-line outside of pouncy, rb's who cant play, on ANY team, a qb who cant hit the big play and the martin scandal. now, if you all knew before the draft last year we would have all these things happen, would you have bet we would be an 8-8 team?
the answer is no. you wouldnt. PHILBIN is a very good coach who has almost no real talent [IRELAND HAD COMPLETE CONTROL OF DRAFT PICS AND F/A"S], and a maybe he will, maybe he wont qb, awful o-line and an nfl scandal and a gm and front office dog fighting for power and their jobs. and he took the team to 8-8!!
