I don't think it's 'coddling' the quarterback to name him the starter when you are already planning to start him and aren't even going to give a single first team rep to the backup during the week. The fact that the QB already came out and said "I'm starting" means there is absolutely no freaking reason on Earth not to simply say "Yeah, he's starting."

This is just a case of the coach being tone-deaf, that's why people are so upset. Joe Philbin is either TRYING to create a distraction for the team because he saw that they actually played better during Bullygate last season, or he's just digging his heels in to be stubborn for stubborn's sake. As for the idea that Joe doesn't name starters at any position, that's BOGUS. He named the starting right guard a few weeks ago when asked about it.

Tannehill needs to play better? Agree. Tannehill shouldn't be coddled? Agree. If this 'breaks' Tannehill he is mentally weak and not fit to be an NFL starting QB? Agree.

But this is still just bizarre mismanagement by Joe Philbin UNLESS this is indeed some kind of Machiavellian plan he's put in place to motivate the team.

Excellent post! He's not smart enough to have planned this. He would not have apologized today if it was planned. He is tone deaf and perhaps the most clueless leader I've ever seen, except for one other that I cannot mention because he can only be discussed on another forum.

They both sealed their fate, if we lose Philbin probably gets canned in the bye week, and ryan has to grind at winning the fanbase over because all eyes are on him with this next performance. I have to say, Matt Moore looks good in this offense so to me to save the season it has to be a possibility.
