J-off's 2018 Draft Special: Miami's Need/board By Draft Pick

As usual, great work J. I like Rudolph at 42 but am very intrigued by doubling down and taking JT Barret at 183. When he’s on he’s really good. Problem is consistency. Lot of talk this past season on his deep ball accuracy slipping but I think his targets weren’t as good as the year prior.

Thanks MadDog 88! I wouldn't be mad at a combination of Rudolph and Barrett. I can see Rudolph sneaking into the 1st or falling to the 3rd, so that will be interesting to watch. I tend to be in the middle on both Rudolph and Jackson. In my experience, they're polarizing prospects, who people have as 1st-round guys or 3rd/4th-round guys, and I like both in the late-2nd/early-3rd. If I had to bet, Jackson goes in the the top 20, and Rudolph goes top 40.

Appreciate the work brotha. Although imo spending a draft pick on JT Barrett would be a waste of one. Watched every snap he ever took and that arm simply won’t cut it in the nfl - one hell of a leader though and I think that could buy him a chance somewhere

In the parenthesis by each player, I posted his consensus ranking (to date - as Arif is still gathering boards, but you can read more about that in the link). If a name is bold, my ranking on a player is much higher than the consensus. I didn't bother highlighting the players that I rank far lower than the consensus, because I'm not rooting against any of these players, and I'd prefer to direct the focus to the players I really like. That said, I'll probably make a post later in the thread with both groups.

I hope you'll notice that my board emphasizes passing and stopping the pass. It also takes into account how much each position makes/how the NFL values each position. But, that's just to say that I'm looking for players with the biggest impact, rather than the biggest perceived impact, and Smith and Nelson at the top of the board should indicate that while the board favors high-value positions, it also favors high-talent players. Keep in mind that tiers indicate where I would be happy drafting a player - where I think he's a good bet: the potential payoff vs risk make sense. So, you see only six non-QB's (eight overall) in the Top 10 and only thirty-two non-QB's (thirty-five overall) in the Top 40, etc.. All that said, it's a pretty straight-forward Big Board. As always, please enjoy!

Oh! The asterisk indicates some level of success as a return man in college (added value). I don't think I missed anyone, but if I did, lemme know.

Hey J, how about a draft recap assessing how Miami did? I know you probably don't have anything better to do with your time than to write a long involved report for my entertainment lol, but I am interested to know what you think. If I had to guess, I would say that you probably were okay with what Miami did. They definitely drafted some high end athletes, which I know that you like, I am just hoping they are as high end football players.

Appreciate the interest! Was going to do a review for every team, but stuff came up. This is my quick review for Miami (numbers to the right are where I ranked them overall and in what tier I ranked them):

1 (11) Minkah Fitzpatrick, S, Alabama - 18th Top 40
2 (42) Mike Gesicki, TE, Penn State - 31st Top 40
3 (73) Jerome Baker, LB, Ohio State - 116th 4th Round
4 (123) Durham Smythe, TE, Notre Dame - 180th 5th-7th
4 (131) Kalen Ballage, RB, Arizona State - 103rd 3rd/4th
6 (209) Cornell Armstrong, CB, Southern Miss - NR
7 (227) Quentin Poling, LB, Ohio - 146th 4th/5th
7 (229) Jason Sanders, K, New Mexico - NR

Highlights: Minkah Fitzpatrick, Mike Gesicki, and Kalen Ballage

Miami adds an athletic and versatile DB, a freak-athlete TE, and a big, fast receiving back. Fitzpatrick will, as he should, make the biggest impact this year, and he's the most likely player from the class to develop into a Pro Bowler, but Gesicki has the highest ceiling. If he works out, he'll be a match-up problem somewhere between Greg Olsen and Jimmy Graham. His floor should be better version of Coby Fleener, which would be less than ideal but still helpful. Ballage will never be the main guy, but he can be an effective weapon out of the backfield, and if you get him in space, he has the speed to take it.

Bummers: Jerome Baker

Like the idea of a fast LB, but in the 3rd, you'd like one with better instincts. I don't see a large gap between Jerome Baker and Matthew Thomas, and Thomas went undrafted. Baker brings something Miami needs, but he's a limited player.

I have seen a lot of Dolphin picks where they claim the RB we draft is not an every down back. However history is saying the opposite .
