Ja´Wuan James vs Alabama, South Carolina & Oregon

TedSlimmJr, who probably is more of an astute clinical evluator of college-level skills and how they translate at the next level than the overwhelming majority of armchairers on this site and generally more critical in lambasting our moves than most, from the perspective of watching James play his Crimson Tide for 4 years, declares James to be a good pick, given our needs and where we drafted, stating his selection does a good job in filling a critical dire need observing that James can sure play -with some of his skills being off the charts. Ted's certainly not always right, but his batting avg is a helluva lot more trustworthy than many within the crowing cacophony of condemnation driven by appetite for bright shiny trinkets. http://www.finheaven.com/showthread.php?354313-WalterFootball-com-Day-1-winners-amp-losers-Yup-Dolphins-are-losers&p=1065072695#post1065072695

Bright shiny trinkets? Where? I want one!!!!

Yeah but we could have gotten him 112 picks later.

I heard he was projected to be mr irrelevant. Hickey waaaaaaay reached. We should have drafted a kicker because they score points.

Smh...I, like most, werent as familiar with his play. Watching his tapes make me way more comfortable with the pick. Odrick & Pouncey weren't sexy but are a huge part of our team.

Those who are crying need to realize that IF Hickey pulls only two players from this draft who START as three down players AND are GOOD vs. mediocre, he will have done something that Ireland completely failed to do last year w. 11 picks.

And throughout his career drafting for the Phins, lol.

Most people crying their eyes out over this pick are really crying over the failure of their buddy Ireland.

If he hadn't left the team in such dire straights, Hickey is not forced into "safely" taking James at 19. Great teams can roll the dice every year, trading down or picking up injured or project players. Sorry teams -- if they want to be rebuilt -- have to make every draft pick count.

Make em count, Hickey. Do something that Ireland never could do: Get a second round player that's an impact player. Maybe even a third rounder to make impact.

Maybe we can be a couple games above .500 this year.

LD

It's time to take ireland's b*lls out your mouth and move on. You seem to be the one butt hurt. Move on and let it heal dude.

And how many times can you recall Ireland critics adamantly declaring that we would have been better off as a franchise heeding the evals of our own site draft gurus? If the shoe fits.........

Anyone would have been better than Ireland, come on.

Hickey must do something in 2nd and 3rd to make an impact on this roster, so far, he merely plugged a hole, didnt "improve" the team per se from a W/L column.

When your boat is sinking, do you grab a fishing rod or do you try to plug the hole? We were sinking and Hickey did the right thing.

But....but we could have gotten him 48 picks later.

Who says? Would you have put $100 on that statement?

The matchup you won't find on the internet that I'm positive the Dolphins keyed on was his matchup against Dee Ford, who he dominated in their 18 pass protection snaps against one another. There wasn't any give-and-take there.

He also dominated Michael Sam (SEC DPOY) and made him look like a UDFA but I guess that's not an accomplishment anymore. I say that and people just respond that Michael Sam should be a UDFA, they don't stop and think that he was one of the biggest defensive play makers in the SEC this year and a lot of tackles didn't manage to make him look like a UDFA yet James did.

In 2012 he made Devin Taylor look like a UDFA too. I was a huge Devin Taylor fan and that game gave me serious pause about him even though I adored him. Devin went off in the 4th round to the Lions and played better than Dion Jordan did in 2013.

Here's that game:

Does he have weaknesses in the ground game? Yes that's been my consistent criticism of him. I've always compared him with a Vernon Carey or Orlando Franklin (whom I also compared heavily to Vernon Carey when he came out). That's the mold. It's what they're looking for.

People clamor for a better run blocker now but then they bitch when the Dolphins lose a game because Tyson Clabo can't come even close to blocking Mario Williams at the most critical point in the game.

Let's look at some of the top teams in the league the past few years..

49ers- took Anthony Davis in the first round
Ravens- took Michael Oher in the first round
Patriots- took Sebastian Vollmer in the second round
Broncos- took Orlando Franklin in the second round
Bengals- took Andre Smith in the first round

All of them hit besides Oher. But even he had a stretch of pretty good play for a year or two and just got a 4 year 20 million dollar contract

Anthony Davis, Michael Oher were left tackles, so it's expected you'd draft them in the first round. The other first round pick you have, Andre Smith, was rated the best run blocking tackle in the draft and that's why he went 6th overall. JaWuan James is not a left tackle, and he is not rated the best run blocking tackle in the draft or projected as a first round pick. I don't see the connection.

JaWuan James himself was surprised he was picked so high. So either we are brilliant, or we reached. We can't have it both ways.

In the videos, he looks like a solid player. But let's keep this in perspective. He's just a right tackle. He won't throw touchdowns, catch passes in the EZ. He won't even be expected to block that brilliantly for our running backs. He was drafted to keep Tannehill upright, period. So let's move on, and let's get some playmakers.

Here's six games for JaWuan, FYI:

why is everyone crying about playmakers? i think wallace, hartline, matthews and clay can make a ton of plays if tannehill stays upright.

When I watch the tapes he looks like he is always in the right position, he looked extremely smart and well coached. He definitely needs to bulk up, which is probably the easiest thing to fix with an NFL weight room.

I watched the Alabama video and came away with 3 things. 1. His pass blocking is very solid. He gets in good position with his feet and uses his hands well to control the rusher. 2. He moves well on pulls and traps. 3. He needs to get stronger in the run game.

4/ Tenn. QB looked awful!!

CKP is making me feel better about this pick, can't wait to see the tape vs Auburn
