james Walker: Dolphins OTA notes

Will admit, it seemed you were referring to bullygate...but your comment seemed a bit OT even though you're bringing up the line coach when the discussion was the improvement of a couple line players.
I just feel better about guys like Thomas and Turner being coached up

If we can let Billy Turner sit and learn for a year we will be in a good spot next year with two young sexy gaurds. Center LT and RT.

Chubbs

Applaud that man - this is a great comment and I really do hope you're right as the sheer thought of that group of 5 on paper could be something.... sexy, as you say :)

Truly the only thing i have been impressed with Dallas Thomas so far is that they are saying he is acting like a leader... thats pretty huge for a second year player... Cant wait for training Camp...

There was an advantage to getting rid of the snake & the meathead?

if Dallas turns out to be a decent player and starts for us that's a major plus. Gives Turner time to learn both guard and tackle. Most of us had written Thomas off as a wasted pick. Nice if he proves us wrong.

Speak for yourself fishfan. Only the foolish and the unintelligent/uninformed give up on players after an injury plagued rookie preseason and regular season. But that seems the norm on finheaven...

I think having James here might be a small portion of Thomas' motivation to be better and become more of a leader. Thomas may or may not be directly involved in mentoring James, but having someone watching you that knows where you come from and who you used to be can motivate some people to improve and demand more of themselves.

I'm not saying it's a big motivator. But I think having two ex-teammates reunited from college to pro can only help the team, line and locker room.

I think this OL is leaps and bounds ahead of where it was last year. I'm satisfied we now have the tools to protect Tannehill.

The olive will be a improvement, Benton is a great oline coach. That unit will be most improved just by him alone.

If Thiggy doesn't make it to the 53 i'd like to see Landry as the punt returner (good hands) and maybe Miller running back kicks.

Makes much more sense than using Landry as at KR. As a PR he has the combination of quickness and strength to be productive. At KR you need more pure speed, and Miller does bring that to the table. But if Miller is the starting RB, and Landry is the #1 slot WR, I'd be slow to subject either to the injury risks that come with returning kicks. I'm not high on Miller, but I am high on Landry, and I think either or both could start on offense in those roles.

A few points.

1. Looks like the OG competition is bringing out the best in our players. Thomas, Shelley, Turner so far are showing real well. I like it. (If only this would also apply to RB competition).

2. WR is stacked and IMO we keep 6 (Wallace, Gibson, Hartline, Landry, Matthews, Binns), this sends Thiggy packing as KR/PR.

3. Funny enough I think the fact that we have yet to hear JuWuan James mentioned in OTA reports is great.

landry will be our returner this year. I just don't see thigpen making the cut

I personally don't want to see Jarvis Landry returning kicks...It may sound crazy and way to premature at this point...and yes it is for those that want to chastise me...but I think Jarvis Landry is going to become a great receiver with the hands he has...I don't want to see his career ruined by returning kicks.

I hope he doesn't either.

I like the idea of Landry or even Mathews on punt returns and one of our faster youngsters on kick off returns. Thigpen was pretty bad at punt returns but he did make a few nice plays out of the slot when given the opportunity, so while I don't want him returning punts again I would give him every opportunity to see what he has as a receiver.

I didn't except anything out of Dallas Thomas so this is... a pleasant surprise? Let's see what happens when the pads come on.

The ONLY way WR is stacked is with possession WRs.

Wallace -- 4.3 legit. Only true playmaker WR on roster (jury out on Landry)
Hartline -- 4.6 (closer to a 4.6 in pads than a 4.5 and plays much weaker than one might think)
Landry -- 4.6+ in pads (more quickness than Hartline but even slower downfield)
Matthews -- 4.55 slowfoot. Better body control than Hartline, but cannot make plays downfield consistently.
Binns -- 4.55 and limited, but w. decent size. Has the potential to be a redzone threat -- and perhaps more potential as number 2 than Hartline. Still not a true threat downfield, though.
Gibson -- 4.6 w. decent quickness but zero threat downfield.

Slowest stable of WRs in the NFL, across the board. And limitations for each WR.

One true playmaker as of right now.

LD
p.s. and this in a league where 4.5 is considered marginal for a CB. Which means that most of the time Miami's WRs are lining up against defenders quicker and more talented than them.

They all have a different skill-set. Teams really only need one real speed guy....and, we have that. We have receivers that can separate, have great hands, and can be counted on for possession. Who cares about timed speed.
