Jason Cole: Marino NOT impressed with Philbin's handling of Tannehill

I'm not claiming to have the credentials to analyze game film to determine wherein the problem lies. So taking a common sense perspective it is natural to wonder, when the rushing YPA > the passing YPA, that the problem lies with the QB and not the OL. With Tannehill's athletic frame is it not reasonable to expect him to exhibit some pocket awareness and make the types of plays that we see consistently from Roethlisberger and Rivers? Just maybe some of the sacks are on Tannehill.

Sure. I squarely had the blame on one sack on Tannehill and at least one other I'd say "Yeah he coulda done more." But let me ask you two questions:

1. Do you think Tannehill made any big plays on Sunday where he escaped from the pocket, slid out, and hit a receiver in stride? Yes or no?
2. Who do you think has a higher percentage of sacks taken on dropbacks: Russell Wilson or Ryan Tannehill? 2013 or career, doesn't matter, the answer is the same. RW or RT?

If the answer is Tannehill then he needs to run more often or roll out and start making plays outside the pocket. These were the athletic skills that made him a high first round selection.

But if Wilson is being pressured more than Tannehill you seem to be making my point that there are plays Tannehill is not able to make under less than optimal circumstances.

While pocket awareness may be fixable by coaching, the larger issue is that Tannehill, unlike Wilson, exhibits no touch or accuracy. Cam Cameron, who at least had success as an OC, explained that the reason why Brady Quinn was not drafted was because throwing inaccuracy is not correctable through coaching.

I think Tannehill gets the blame for 2 of the sacks, maybe 3 if he should have decided pre-snap to be prepared to run in the first option isn't open.

1. Yes. Several, including the TD to Hartline. I also say him step up in the pocket, shift into a throwing lane, and throw balls away. IMO, the focus on the negative plays is not because they happen more often than other teams. It is because the chunk plays necessary to offset them aren't happening often enough and because easy plays are being missed and killing drives.
2. I know the answer to this.

I'm beginning to wonder if the issue with Tannehill is pre-snap not post-snap. I wonder if he is supposed to be altering his progressions based on pre-snap reads. One of the things about Sherman's offense (according to comments from Tannehill) is that it was not designed to do that.

I don't agree with this. I agree that Wilson shows more touch, but not that Tannehill shows none.

I'd like to know who the rat fink is within the organization immediately running to several reporters with internal "nuggets," clearly showing no regard for Marino or Philbin as both look bad when this comes out. I know who my first guess is and that would be Mike Sherman's son in law...

You just punted on both questions. You completely refused to answer the first question, and you uhm... also refused to answer the second question.

How about this one, who takes more sacks over 100 dropbacks across their respective careers: Ryan Tannehill or Big Ben Roethlisberger? Which QB is the bigger sack taker?

What's with "Taylor's" marrying within the Miami organization anyways? Fringes on Dolphin incest.

tannehill is the classic coach killer.

he will never be good enough to take a team through playoffs and win a bowl. NEVER.

say what you want about philbin [wasnt just two weeks ago after a win when all were praising philbin, dancin'n joe and how he turned it around and made himself more player friendly, yada ya yada. sky was the limit.

but then, tannehill, over the next two games became the REAL tannehill, the one from the FIRST HALF of the pats game. and now joe is the scapegoat. and lazor. and hickey. and the ball boy, yo mamma, etc... .

this offense IS innovative. it puts players in the right places and causes mismatches. IF you go back and look at the replay of the game, guys were in place. the execusion by the qb was AWFUL! wr's had somd drops, but hey, ask marino about the marx brothers and dropped balls!! this a a qb friendly system, that is why guys like whats his name in philly are instant stars. but, you have to be able to read a defense QUICK and you have to be ACCURATE and ON TIME being this is a timing offense.

and everyone of those traits are ryan tannehill weaknesses!!! tannehill hasnt regressed OR progressed!! everyones expectations for him in year 3 with this new offenses had fans sending him to the hof. but the problem is, tannehill doesnt have talent or his simple college scheme and coach any longer and is the SAME QB as he was in december of his rookie year. there was no big improvement from him year two. same guy as we saw in december where he had that big jump from his rookie mistakes early in that season. still throwing the ball behind or to far in front of players. cant hit the big play down field. holds the ball to long. sticks to his primary and rarely looks anywhere else. this year, last year AND his rookie year!!!!

so now what? you will probably all get your wish and joe will be fired. the prospects will come in and be asking if he can get rid of tannehill. any REAL coach will want to do that first off. what will that answer be from ross? the second question will be, "what about dan marino"? am i going to have a snitch over my head also"? and the coaches will pass and all the "no one wants to come here" talk will continue. and THIS TIME, it will be right because hanging on to a bogus qb and not wanting a company snitch over you are things no coach will want. cant blame them. would YOU?

this business with marino has gone south right off the bat. having cole and company ON THE NET telling THE WORLD how marino is here to look over philbin and tannehill and report back just killed him with any other coach or regime that may want to come here. dan has experience THROWING THE BALL and nothing else. some say philbin has never coached or called a play, well, what has marino done in the front office of ANY team? NOTHING!!

and funny thing, danny hasnt been offered a gig by ANY team, at ANY level. god, even JOEY PORTER got a gig with the the steelers, and they RAN HIM OFF ONCE!!!

his family life and financial decisions and recent job performance from his tv gigs have all turned to BIG, STEAMING PILES!! all at marino's own hand.

and the only job he could muster after being FIRED from his recent gig is a snitch position with his old team. if one looks at danny marino right now with open and unbiased eyes, he is a MESS and has almost killed off his life and reputation, marriage and fortune. but you trust his opinion and deiisons on other people? not me.

and now, someone says danny doesnt like philbin's clock management in the last game and the tar and feathers come out? what if we would have ended up WINNING that game. it wouldnt even have been brought up.

think danny ever gave a crap about one iffy coach decision in a game? no!! he threw the ball for td's and won. tanny does not have those skills and dan marino doesnt have the skills or reputation to be telling ANYONE what is right or wrong about them. its all just piling on with the haters.

our run game seems to be fixed. the o-line IS better. we have quality wrs. tom brady would take ALL of these wr's if offered. tannehill throws behind, over, under and sideways. he IS NOT a franchise qb and never, ever will be. this again is remnants of JEFF IRELAND.

a.so. we STILL HAVE 5 YEARS of IRELAND DRAFT PICS AND MISTAKES on this team!! one year from hickey has given us more isntant talent that all irelands past drafts!! and we do have major injured players out and suspensions [not jordan he doesnt matter]. these things matter but, when you look a RT'S game, he is not a winner. he breaks down in crucial situations. the only question now is, how many coaches are we going to go through or lose with tannehill around?

like i said, classic coach killer. throw in a company snitch and all that great coaching that philbin is keeping from the dolphins will NEVER arrive.

i am not as down on philbin as most are, but ROSS, there is the one who needs to go. and take snitch and tanny with him.

He is a coach killer. He's gotten poor Sherman fired not once but twice in under three years. Ireland fired. Philbin, Lazor and Hickey about to be fired. I'm sure there are exceptions but I would say a general rule of thumb is if you leave a trail of bodies in your wake you might be the problem.

No. No, they're not. You're leaving a trail of unfounded assumptions.

They're in big trouble right now. Philbin's on year three, his team is 1-2, and he is being crushed in the national press.

Philbin, in particular, is in a bind right now.

I have trouble calling Tannehill a coach-killer. Tannehill has been played by Philbin for over 2 seasons now, and we've seen some good stuff, and some bad stuff.
NOT entirely Tannehill's fault by any means, but the bad habits are very visible.
Philbin keeps deciding to invest in him AS his starter, and you have to point the finger to who's call it was to start him game after game. It's Philbin, plain and simple.
He may be a secret great coach in the making, but choosing to run with Tanne is going to be a gamble, a risk that he shouldn't just be called a "victim" of. That's the card he's played, and is still playing.

At the end of all this, first person to go should be Tannehill. My love for Philbin has waned this past year, but the biggest issue in the game so far is execution. The coaching could be better, but any coach could always do better. Tanne's simply staying consistent as...an inconsistent QB, and at some point you just have to pull the plug.

This is fair. You have a short window to get the players to buy in and that window is closing fast if its not already shut. But you can't blame him for taking the risk then, and maybe not even now. :nothing ventured, nothing gained:

And you're complaining? That's a good thing, my friend.

SOS, Im just curious if you let someone else post for you on occasion. You are the extreme negative I hate everyone one day, Homer up with FFIB the next day??
