Jason Cole: Marino NOT impressed with Philbin's handling of Tannehill

Special advisor Dan Marino on Tuesday gave the most comprehensive explanation of his role with the Miami Dolphins since being hired in August and it most definitely does not include reporting to owner Stephen Ross on head coach Joe Philbin or quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

In talking about his new role Marino shot down a report by Bleacher Report that stated the Hall of Fame player is this season evaluating Tannehill and Philbin and was "not impressed" with Philbin -- particularly the coach's handling of Tannehill.

"This whole thing with the thing [Bleacher Reportt] said, there's not once in this whole situation where Mr. Ross has asked me, 'Hey you have to sit down and evaluate Joe Philbin or Ryan Tannehill,'" Marino said by phone. "My whole thing from the beginning has been to support on the football side, be excited about being back in the organization and as far as the community stuff, working on the sponsorship side -- things like going over to meet with some of the sponsors in London. And that's really it.

"I don't know where [Bleacher Report] got this information."

Marino has met Tannehill and had dinner with him once. But he has not been with Tannehill a lot. The two have never been on the field together, Marino has never thrown with Tannehill nor tried to coach Tannehill.

And that's not likely to change in the future.

"That's not my role," Marino said. "I'm going to be around and be supportive. I'm just happy to be back and be part of the organization. But none of that other stuff."

I think most of us realized this was a cliff year either we fall off the cliff or climb the cliff. New GM, O coordinator, new Oline so many moving parts at the same time that the obvious choice is that this team was more poised to fall off the cliff than climb it. Like many of you I was hopeful after the draft and Pats game but the reality we would have to be extremely lucky with all the new parts of this team coming together while still dealing with the issues of poor linebacking play and a questionable running game. That does not mean we cannot still be hopeful and this team will not turn it around. But and the warts are out there, Philbin playing not to loose IMO and guys like Hartline jiving around at the goal line in the first half when we were behind in the score and not playing that well. These guys need to get in touch if they want to win, Philbin needs to show fire, guys need to play hungry and Ryan T must get past the deer in the headlight phase and throw the darn ball to the open recievers and quit thinking about it so much.

I don't think anyone is impressed with the way Philbin handles anything. :idk: He's just not a good leader or coach IMO.

I like Bowles better than Joe back in 2012. Bowles deserves the attention for the work he is doing in AZ.

How about your biggest man crush of all Jeff Fisher? You see one of his buffoons shove his QB out of the way on the sidelines? You can't say they don't have any passion though...

It's entirely possible that Jason Cole made up what Marino's role is, but what else could Dan do but come out and throw water on this?

You can't just have a report sitting out there that you brought in Dan Marino to give the thumbs up or down on your coach and he just gave him the thumbs down in week 3. That would be devastating. I guess. About as devastating as having Joe Philbin coaching your team.

### With Ryan Tannehill taking all the first team snaps Tuesday, Joe Philbin’s refusal to name him the starter elicited chuckles and puzzled looks from players, who aren't sure why the coach is doing that.

Meanwhile, some respected voices are criticizing Philbin's handling of this. Here's what three of them had to say tonight on NBCSN's Pro Football Talk:

NBC analyst Tony Dungy: “I don’t think it’s good for Ryan Tannehill, or the Miami Dolphins. One of the first lessons I ever learned as an assistant coach working for Chuck Noll, and then Bill Walsh and Dennis Green, is that you don’t start a quarterback controversy…you’re telling everyone, ‘I’m not sure I believe in Ryan Tannehill.’”

PFT analyst Jason Taylor: “It’s kind of a head-scratcher to me. If you’re going to make the change, then make the change. It’s Week 3 – I don’t think that change is warranted yet…you’re playing with a rookie right tackle, a backup center…if you’re going to try and put some doubt in the Raiders’ mind? Who cares what the Raiders think. Know who your quarterback is, and if it’s Ryan Tannehill, show him that support so he can continue to grow. Don’t put that doubt in the back of his mind.”

PFT analyst Ross Tucker: “This is garbage to me…there are only a couple possibilities here, and none of them are good. This is Joe Philbin outthinking himself. He’s trying to get creative…if you need to do this to try and beat the Raiders, are you really going anywhere this year?...if he’s doing this to motivate Ryan Tannehill, he’s not the guy anyway.”

By the way, Taylor watched Sunday's game in Stephen Ross' suite, and Ross respects Dungy. Remember, Ross last November named Dungy and Taylor to a locker-room conduct committee that never ended up meeting. So their opinions probably will carry weight with Ross.

Biggest man crush is a one Mike McCoy.

I will say it to you again for the 1,000 time. I loved the idea of Jeff Fisher, but I never thought he'd come. I supported the McCoy candidacy with all my being. I did not think Joe was qualified for the gig. The safe pick might have been Bowles.

I think some of these pundits need to STFU. So Dungy learned not to start QB controversies from the late, great Chuck Noll? This is the same legendary Chuck Noll that benched Terry Bradshaw in favor of Joe Gilliam. And Terry Hanratty I believe also supplanted Bradshaw during the early part of Bradshaw's career.

Seriously, these are grown men and if their psyche's are so fragile to deal with the vicissitudes of playing professional football then they don't belong in the NFL. Philbin is doing nothing wrong in how he is handling the current QB situation. There is no definitive manual on the right way to deal with this. The statistical evidence measuring Tannehill's lack of performance is so glaring that it would irresponsible for Philbin not to consider all options.

Zimmer was my 1st choice w/ Perry Fewell being my darkhorse.

I would have been fine w/ McCoy who played QB at what is now a Pac 12 school here in SLC.

As for Philbin, I was neither for or against. I was just glad the meatball was gone.

Philbin needs to be loaded into a cannon and shot into the middle of the sun. I honestly haven't hated a coach this much since Wannschmuck.
