Jason Cole: Tom Gamble said to be Ross' top pick for GM

Gamble’s extensive NFL resume includes work in both college and pro scouting, contract negotiations, and a stint in the coaching ranks.

While working closely with General Manager Trent Baalke, Gamble oversees both the college and pro personnel efforts. In his previous role, Gamble monitored every NFL roster with an emphasis on scouting talent of upcoming pro free agents, while also maintaining continuous depth of personnel on the 49ers roster. Gamble originally entered the NFL as an assistant in the player personnel department of the Philadelphia Eagles in 1988. He stayed with the Eagles through 1994, serving as a college scouting administrator, area scout, contract negotiator, and later served as the director of pro scouting.

From 1995 to 1996, Gamble served as a defensive assistant/quality control coach with the New York Jets. He then worked as a part-time college scout for the Carolina Panthers before serving as a pro scout for the Baltimore Ravens during the 1997 season.

As you can see, Gamble has worked both in college and pro scouting, and both at a high level. So your information there was simply incorrect. I think you're also in error in calling Omar Khan a "personnel" man. Khan's area of expertise is in the business and contracts side of football, not the scouting side. He is, essentially, the Dawn Aponte of the Steelers organization.

Licht on the other hand is a qualified personnel guy and I hope we bring him in.

Look at the teams Gamble has been with. Look at what his responsibilities were at each of those stops, and in which years. Then look at the personnel moves those teams made.

I did, and I was impressed.
 
Now that we're free of Ireland, it really becomes clear how many exciting, viable options are out there. The idea of a Gamble and Highsmith team up is just incredibly appealing to me. Get an influx of talented, accomplished personnel men into our front office and try to develop the right dynamic.
 
as i said, GAMBLE is my hands down, no close second hope for our GM gig.

and now the talk of it going to BRIAN GAINE!!

this is the move most would expect from boss ross. close, familiar, safe. but, i never in a million years thought he would pull the trigger on ireland do on that alone i am giving him a new earned credability for doing what had to be done. hopefully, he he keeps this same resolve through the upcoming hiring processes.

it has been rumored that GAMBLE is ross's first choice. and why not, he is the very best available. but i will say this, if the GAINES rumor comes to pass and he is the new GM, then we can probably assume that GAMBLE turned the job down, ross spares no amount and gives the full press for the people he covets. if he turned the job down it would be he know about the aponte/philbin power structure and wants NOTHING to do with it. and, if we find out later that he did want the gig and ross went with GAINES, then the POWER OF APONTE [she and gaines are tight] is upon us and we will see a downward spiral we couldnt imagine. and ross will NEVER be forgiven or given an INCH of credibility again.

the fans are on the ropes for sure!! this is becoming a real nail biter!

You're absolutely right. It'll be a coop if Ross can lure him to Miami. He really wants to be in Philly all reports.

But Ross has to give him complete control otherwise he's not coming. Neither will any other "name" GM.

I don't know if he will be a good GM or not, I was excited when his name first surfaced in our search but there is a reason we moved on and a reason he didn't get one of the many other openings. I want to find out that reason and no I don't buy the close to home excuse.

Considering that Jeff Ireland was the most unpopular executive in the league and somehow kept his job despite five straight non-winning seasons and multiple fan revolts, yeah, I'd say that's a pretty stable job.

didnt "get" or didnt want"?

he is a smart guy. he knows what he wants and wont do anything that doesnt give himself a chance to be successful.

why work so hard an earn the reputation you have just to jump into the wrong situation and now add failed gm to your resume?

the jets had no qb last year and none on the horizon. he and rex probably didnt mesh. many thought there could be a complete cleanout of the jets at the end of this season.

maybe true, maybe not. now, i am not singling out the jets as gamble listened to other teams also. its just an example. they coveted him? why would they say no? it was supposed to be a slam dunk that he was the guy!!

miami has a qb, a good defense and he has ties and homes in south florida. i can see it happeneing as ross will offer him un matchable salary. will he give him whatever his responsibility demands are, hard to say. no one knows what happened or what was offered in those meetings with the teams and gamble, but i doubt any of them said NO. god, why would they?

of course, he didn't want any openings. he was waiting for SF to open up so he had a ready made team.:lol:

The jets had a QB and he had the ability to draft a QB which every GM wants to do.

I believe he and rex go back a long way.

The reports were the Jets soured on him not the other way around and let's assume he didn't want our job well what about the other 5-6 openings?

I don't know enough about him as none of us really do, I got excited reading about him last year but something happened where he didn't get a job and no he wasn't waiting for the great dolphins opening:lol:
 
San Francisco 49ers’ director of player personnel Tom Gamble has emerged as the top candidate for the New York Jets’ general manager job, ESPN reported Sunday.

Gamble interviewed for the job on Saturday.

The job opened up when the Jets fired Mike Tannenbaum last week.

Gamble reportedly declined a second interview with the Jacksonville Jaguars so he could concentrate on the Jets’ job.

Not that it matters to us but the Bucs really wanted Chris Ballard from KC. The Chiefs were willing to let him interview but he turned the job down
