I know Joe hasn't been anywhere near the top, but 28? I guess losing the last two last year, after only needing to win one of two, will drop you near the bottom in some people's eyes.:ponder:

28
Joe Philbin, Dolphins

Joe Philbin
You still want to rinse your eyes in bleach after recapping last season with the Dolphins, and while making it to 8-8 after all the chaos is admirable, it’s not obvious on the surface what made Philbin worth saving while so many others in the organization were tossed overboard. Here’s his chance to prove he deserved the reprieve.

I think he has done a fair job with all that has gone on right before he arrived and since he has been in Miami. Is he the best? No. Is he 28th? Not to me. I would probably rank him 22nd with Ken Whisenhunt, Jay Gruden, Dennis Allen, Mike Zimmer, Gus Bradley, Bill O'Brien, Jason Garrett, Mike Pettine, Doug Marone, and Marc Trestman all below him. Some of those guys are entering their first year and may do great things. However, they have never coached in the NFL and there are very few guys that I would give any credit to without having coached in the NFL before (head coach). I struggled with putting Rex Ryan ahead of him (Philbin), but the man has accomplished more even if I do hate him. If Philbin can get this year's team to 10 wins and a wildcard WIN, I would be willing to bump him to 20th or so. You have to be consistent in this league if you want to be noticed and considered good.

I think I could have done just as well throwing darts. Jim Harbaugh 9? Mike Smith 12? Jeff Fisher 13? JIM CALDWELL 16!?!?!? HE HAS JIM ****ING CALDWELL AHEAD OF MARVIN LEWIS, BRUCE ARIENS AND RON RIVIERA!?!?!?

Philbin was thrown in the middle of a bunch of first time coaches at the end of the list. I would say the author must be a disgruntled Dolphins fan..

Marc Trestman was also a hard one for me to put BELOW Philbin as he has not done bad for Chicago either. I just think with what he had to work with he should have done a little better. I do realize that they were in the position to take the NFC North from the Packers last year, but in the end, they were 8-8 just like us and did not go to the playoffs.

The team lost that last two games to miss the playoffs, but the biggest thing was the so called "bully gate". There was a feeling by some that Joe should have been able to read minds and because he didn't lose his job over Jonathan Martin leaving his teammates during a playoff run, people don't like Joe.

Joe is not the 28th head coach based on the production of the team on the field, the Martin situation skews a lot of opinions about him. The average person thinks he can't control a locker room but when you listen to those in the locker room and organization, the situation was more of Martin having problems than anything the team did or didn't do. Sure Incognito was a knucklehead and pushed things a little too far, but it isn't fair to blame Joe for that. That is exactly what I believe is happening when Sporting News ranks him as #28 and RotoWorld who has him as the worst returning head coach.

Take the Martin crap out of the formula and Philbin is probably more around #20. Though there is a good chance he could be higher after this season.

I don't agree with the ranking as it is either, however, I wouldn't say that Philbin is better than Fisher. Fisher coached in TN where I live, and there were a lot of people upset when he left here (I am not a die hard Titans fan. I will pull for them because they are the home team, but I'm a Dolphins fan obviously). As far as Caldwell goes, I would say that Philbin probably is a better coach than him, but just like Rex Ryan he could say, "Have you been to the AFC Championship game lately?". Caldwell was just born with a silver spoon in his mouth though when he was able to take over the Colts. Again, I think if Philbin wants to be thought of as better than guys like Fisher and Caldwell he needs to go to the places they went. Starting with the playoffs. Then the Superbowl.

That's about where I would have put him. In the 15 to 20 range. Middle of the pack, just like our record.

If you don't have Jim Harbaugh ranked in the top 5, at the very least, then I would put as much stock in your ability to judge and rank head coaches as my 5 year old son...

Based on what this man has accomplished in his short tenure, I would have to agree. I don't see how he was left out (of the top 5). He was barely in the top 10. I will say all day that I do like Philbin, but it sure would have been nice to get Harbaugh.

I think Jim Harbaugh is the best coach in the game, to have him ranked 9th immediately invalidates this list for me.

I would also agree that rankings are hard to get accurate due to all the variables, but the reality is that rankings do exist. It's hard to rank anything really if you think about it. If it were easy nobody would have bust draft picks. ie MOST corners that are successful do not have a horrid pass rush. The longer a corner is on a WR it's likely that their performance is going to decrease. A head coach needs to have a good staff and good players to work with along with numerous other variables.

With all the issues last year, achieving an 8-8 record makes him better than 28, imo. Depends how you look at it.
I would definitely say the coaching staff as a whole is better this year

28th is about right to me. I've never been impressed with him as a coach. And the fact that he wanted to keep his staff intact from last year should make him 32nd.

I actually have time for Philbin, but let's look at this objectively.

75% of teams who go 4-0 get to the playoffs. We managed to beat the odds with 2 spectacularly poor performances when all we needed was one mediocre one to reach the promised land.

We looked quite undercooked coming out in a lot of games.

Our offensive system, run by the guy Philbin brought in, was awful. He had to be sacked and replaced.

Our O-line, run by the guy Philbin brought in, made awful look immaculate. He had to be sacked and replaced.

Our O-line, not content with bringing shame on us on the pitch, did a good job off it. Martin might be a little s**tbag but a lot of stupid crap went down under the watch of Mr. Accountability. Our o-line had to be totally dismantled.

This isn't the 12-month resume of a guy who is going to feature highly in coach rankings, esp when his public persona doesn't do him any favours. I have some hope it'll all work out in the end, as I do believe Philbin is professional and has good experience in good setups. But don't kid yourself that 2013/14 was a good year for Joe.
