Man we are getting positive press. It sure is nice to win.

Given the Dolphins' disarray six weeks ago, it's remarkable they're 7-6 and in contention for the AFC's final wild-card berth heading into their game Sunday against New England.

Sherman, a former head coach at Green Bay and Texas A&M, empathized with the challenge Philbin faced.

''I never had to endure what he's had to endure with the distractions that we had,'' Sherman said. ''You have no idea what a task that is to keep a team together and not splinter amid the adversity. I have to give Joe Philbin tremendous credit for the focus that he demanded from all of us to stay on task. We wouldn't be in this position if he wasn't able to pull us all together, coaches and players alike.''

Patriots coach Bill Belichick, who knows a thing or two about off-the-field distractions, credited Philbin for steady improvement by the Dolphins despite the scandal.

''I think the media blew a lot of that out of proportion - all the hype and everything,'' Belichick said. ''But that didn't derail them in any way. They've been on track. If you watch them play on film, you wouldn't have any sense that whatever else has been in the media has affected the team. They've just gone out there and played very, very competitively every week.''

How impressive is the resume Philbin has compiled this season? If the Dolphins beat the Patriots on Sunday to go two games over .500, I believe Philbin’s name should be mentioned in Coach of the Year conversations. Sure, there are coaches who have won more games, coaches who on the surface would appear to be more deserving.

But has any other coach overcome what Philbin has? Has any other coach produced a winning record in the face of so much scrutiny, so many distractions, so many issues that could have easily torn a football team and a locker room apart?

And only four weeks ago, roughly 130 of the 290 people (45%) who voted in a poll here thought he should be fired. :)

Emotional roller coasters and quick judgements. I'm guilty of being in the 45 percentile. But the job he has done holding this team together is pretty amazing unlike what we saw last season in NY where the circus spun out of control.

He needs to clean up his game time decisions from the last couple of weeks but I am glad he'll be back next season.

Yeah I was too but I must admit, he has done a great job in that regard. But yes, would like to see some clean up on game time decisions. But love the fact that he's six for six on challenges!!

He's done some things well - I don't think he has lost a challenge this year, either.

Not sold on him yet, we've had some bad games, including terrible halftime adjustments in more than several games and coming out flat against a then 0-8 Bucs team.

I want to see how we end the season before I make any kind of judgement on Philbin. But regardless of what any of us think, it's pretty clear he is going to get AT LEAST one more season after this one...

Through this whole process I thought it would be ridiculous if he was fired. I'm glad the team pulled together for him.

As for his challenge record...it is impressive that he has had so many right, but let's be honest. He has left quite a few potential challenges on the field. I'd rather he lose some more and pick up some of the missed opportunities than have a perfect challenge record (or near prefect, I really don't know off handhand).

I don't think there were many times I felt he should have challenged and he didn't... maybe 2-3 more times throughout the course of this season. And yeah, he was like 5-0 coming into last week and won his only challenge of the game so that would leave him still perfect.

Regardless, he needs to get better with in-game time management and half time adjustments before I herald him as our next great coach. Hoping for the best, but not sold yet.

I was ready to sent him packing after the Buffalo game already. Right now I am willing to give him at least one more year. I absolutely love reading that he redirects the praise for the recent wins to the players.

Think about it: if you were a Miami Dolphin player, your locker room atmosphere and your personal attitude in this mess being questioned from the outside, your coach having to constantly hear that he won't coach this team next season and when the chance presents itself for your coach to tell everyone how great a job he's done to keep everything together, he merely shrugs his shoulders and says that it was the players that did a magnificent job preparing, coming out and executing. Imagine what it does with the players: Immediate respect for your head coach. If I read that quote from my coach amid all this mess I know I would work my ass off for this guy.

I can say one thing about Coach Philbin: if he gets fired it won't be because he's not a leader of men. Because he's a terrific leader. If he gets fired it's because he made questionable decisions on the football field. We shall see how the season ends for us.

The irony in all of this is that the Martin cafeteria incident and how Joe worked through the problems, could be the turning point in Philbin's coaching career, ie the moment when he showed leadership and made good calls to turn things around.

Joe has done a good job keeping the team together.

I still state that on game day, Joe leaves a lot to be desired. He does not give his team a competitive advantage on the sideline.

I was ready for his head, but I acknowledge he's gotten this team moving forward from the BS. For me it's the little things I'm not happy about so I'm not completely sold yet.

There's no excuse for coming out unprepared before our two long week games. There's no excuse for not changing things around on our O-line, as bad as it was, and only doing it when we lose two starters. There's no excuse for not recognizing the coaching Tanney (in regards to staying in the pocket at all costs) was getting earlier in the season was retarding his progress and helping us to lose games. I'm still not 100% sold on some personnel moves for what appear to be "character" conflicts. Etc.

Clock management, doe-in-the-headlights stares and some other in-game decision making I can get past more easily because he's still learning and developing as a head coach, but tanking decisions he should have mastered in his 30+ years of coaching experience is difficult for me to understand.

At the time all this news broke (Martin incident) it did look like he was in over his head, but (as I've said) how he responded to for the rest of the season would speak volumes. He has done a great job keeping this team focused on the task at hand....he still makes some questionable calls, but I am more confident in him going forward in his leadership and respect the team has for him.

Great leaders take adversity and grow from it.
Horrible leaders create adversity to drive an agenda.

Good news is Joe appears to be a great leader. Think about it, he became a head coach very soon after the loss of his son. He took a team many thought would only win 3 gamed and made a season respectable. Now, through 14 weeks of which a good portion was filled with the Martina drama we are still in the playoff hunt and having surprise breakout seasons from people like Clay and OV. Very encouraging as a fan.

Philbin's team didn't quit on him after a media created BS bullying narrative??
Congrats Joe!
His team still lost to Thad Lewis at home after a bye, the winless Bucs with 3 extra days to prepare, and have blown more 2nd half leads than anyone.
He used time outs to help Carolina beat us. But doesn't use them at the end of the half last week??
He tried his best to lose last week too, kicking a 52 yarder in Pitt on 4th and 2?

I think its a bunch of BS to give Joe credit for a talented team not quitting. The players have pride, why would you expect them to lay down bc one pu*** got bullied and the media drooled over it??

FWIW I thinj Philbin is a descent leader and an average coach. I don't have anything against him..
