Jonnu Smith and Dolphins reach a deal

Article by Matthew Berry on Jonnu Smith:

🐬 Jonnu Smith signs with the Dolphins

Somewhere, Arthur Smith is crying.
It’s a two-year deal worth up to $10 million for the 28-year-old veteran, who is coming off career-best marks in receptions (50) and receiving yards (582), showcasing plenty of his patented YAC ability along the way. Overall, only Isaiah Likely and George Kittle posted better ESPN YAC scores than Smith in 2023.
The fast get faster in Miami. Although, Smith’s fantasy ceiling isn’t all that high considering Dolphins TEs rank dead last in total targets (120) since Mike McDaniel got to town back in 2022. Wild but true: You can’t score fantasy points in the year 2024 without getting the football first.

Hopefully the days of his girlfriend throwing boiling water to his face are behind him.

Here’s another other area where Smith really helps: He led all NFL tight ends in average YAC (yards after catch) per reception over the past three seasons, including 7.3 last season. Conversely, Miami’s tight ends averaged 3.0 in YAC last season, which was worst in the league. Former Washington Commanders coach Ron Rivera, appearing as an analyst on ESPN, explained how helpful it is to have a player like that on a team with speedy Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle on the outside: “When you try to stop that deep threat, there’s a big opening underneath. If you get a tight end that can catch and run, that’s big threat for your offense.” Smith can do a lot of damage in general, but particularly when teams play the two high-safety looks that slowed the Dolphins’ offense at times last season. Among players with more than 22 catches last season, Smith and 49ers Pro Bowler George Kittle led the NFL in YAC average at 7.3 per catch. Overall, Smith was eighth in yards-after-catch among tight ends with 366.

He's had 4 tds in the last 47 games, so hopefully he can become a good red zone target with Tua and McD.
I wouldn't really worry about those stats as he had ass throwing the ball to him the past two years.

In 4 season with Tennessee he had 16 TD's...8 of them in his 4th season when he was a focal point of the offense.

Exactly. You cant blame the receiver when they have a terrible QB.

Solid pass catching TE.

Should make a decent pairing with Smythe.

We will see if Miami looks for another Day 3 TE to add to the swings they have taken at developmental TE.
I think Julian Hill is that guy
