Jonnu Smith Trade?

I would figure it out with Jonnu. Don't trade him unless you are totally ripping off the Steelers. Tua had great chemistry with Jonnu. Bump him a little with incentives, he played well for us. We don't have anyone but him in the TE room that would start anywhere in the NFL. We can't afford to trade him imo. Pittsburgh will never pay enough to make it worthwhile. Sit him down, make a deal, make him feel wanted. It's almost 6/1 there should be some movement on Ramsay soon if he's really leaving.

I just don't think he is that good of TE. When everyone is covering Hill, Waddle and Achane of course he is going to get open.

Bro if that is the case then why wasn't Gesicki, Smythe and our other scrub TEs not making more plays before Jonnu got here?

Jonnu put up elite TE numbers last season and while he is not elite, he fits this offense really well because of his YAC ability which i would say is elite among TEs. Meanwhile our other TEs couldn't make a defender miss or break a tackle to save their life.

Something doesn't seem right about Smith and McDaniel. Anyone recall the game they just flat out refused to play him until overtime in which he basically carried the team on his back? Oh yeah, another McDaniel wonderclass in that one.

So you look at a year in which Smith made his first ever Pro Bowl, had his most ever receptions and TDs, broke all Dolphins TE records and conclude … there’s something off between him and the coach who calls the plays?

I think it’s more likely that Jonnu feels he deserves a salary bump and extension and that doesn’t fit the very clear strategy being executed this off season ie for the team to get a lot younger

Personally I hope we can figure something out with him that keeps him here next season at a reasonable price.

In my opinion, PFF's 2024 year end review of Smith confirm why the Dolphins should be hesitant to give Smith a big payday. McDaniels system makes him a Pro Bowler. He won't make the Pro Bowl with the Steelers.

"Years of middling results and untapped potential finally gave way to a big breakout season for Jonnu Smith. He smashed his previous career highs in targets (109 to 69), receptions (88 to 50) and receiving yards (886 to 582) and tied his career best with eight receiving touchdowns.

Smith also set career highs in PFF overall grade (78.2) and PFF receiving grade (84.0). He turns 30 in August, so there will certainly be questions over how long he can keep this up, but if nothing else, he was well worth the two-year, $8.4 million contract he inked with Miami prior to the 2024 season."

They were used differently.

1. Smythe was a blocking TE, Jonnu can't block at all.

2. Gesicki was allergic to RAC which is what McD's offense is completely built around. Furthermore McD tried to make him into a blocking TE.....odd as heck.

The reason this makes sense for the Steelers is the way their offense works and the presence of real TE in Freiermuth. If the Steelers want to do a player to player I'll take Freiermuth for Jonnu any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Few reasons, offense was different. In the past we could run and pass block better so we had more opportunities over the top. This year we couldn’t run and pass blocking didn’t allow many deep shots so we went underneath more.

The other reason is we ran a ton of screens to Jonnu which other tight ends couldn’t do so in that aspect he’s much better.

Jonnu wouldn’t have the same effect this year unless things went wrong again and we continued to have a poor run game. NWI/malik and achane will take his short to mid touches

That scrub Gesicki had 112 targets, 73 receptions and 780 yards and 10.7 ypc in 2021 when he was Tua's #2 target.

Jonnu benefitted massively last season for the same reason, he was option 1 or 2 on a lot of routes based on most defenses playing 2 high safeties against the Dolphins. He had 111 targets, 88 receptions, 880 yards and 10.0 ypc.

Maybe TE's just have career years when Tua is targeting them that much.

If we get less than a 2nd for Smith then what are we doing? He's a pro bowler and our go to man last year. Come on Grier if you're going to do the trade don't get fleesed

Try not to wrench your back when reaching for reasons to hate our HC.

Towards the end of the year, yes. I very much he deserved more play time and also agree he deserves an extension, pay bump.
