Jonnu Smith Trade? | Page 41 | FinHeaven - Miami Dolphins Forums

Jonnu Smith Trade?

Jonnu Smith is gone next year if he's not traded. He's likely refusing to play this year under his current contract, and I dont blame him. Hes over 30 and he's only getting 1 more contract, so he has 1 last chance to cash in. That being said, Miami cant afford to pay him. We do have cap space, but we still need to sign a CB, like Asante Samual or somoene that shsakes free during training camp. I would not sacrafice that oportunity to pay Jonnu Smith.

On a side note, when we had the chance to trade Calais Campbell for a 5th rounder in during hte season, hindsight says to we should have taken that 5th rounder. Same situation applies to Jonnu Smith, except this time we'll pull the trigger.
Indeed, could have had another 5th rounder to give up half a season of a guy leaving anyway, on a team going nowhere. How does Homer sing it? I am so smart, SMRT, I am so smart, SMRT. That ditty must be stuck in McD's head.

I still don’t understand why people are blaming the Dolphins for this Jonnu trade talk. We don’t even know if any of this talk is accurate and if it is, how much is accurate or what Jonnu is asking for.

Jonnu wants to break his contract and is asking for more money. The unconfirmed reports are the Dolphins may not want to up his pay. How’s any of that on the Dolphins if we don’t know how much money he’s asking for or if in fact the Dolphins have offered more money. What if Jonnu wants a new, 3 yr $50m contract? Would the Dolphins be stupid to say no to that?

I don't think fans understand how inherently antagonistic the relationship between employers and employees really is.

Every season is filled with contractual discussion, requests for salary bumps, threats of holding out, trade discussions, etc.

This is all just the reality of modern football. There's little incentive for players to sit still and be quiet. On the contrary, they literally have agents whose job it is to finagle more money out of the team on their behalf.

The player can literally do nothing and still be asking for more money, because he said, 'yeah, sure, go ahead' to his agent.

And agents have all the incentive to try and get more money for their players because they in turn get more money themselves.

Of you watch when top teams play each other, rarely

If not for his Injury issues and lack of a consistent O-Line, your breath would have been taken a long time ago. For now, having the best QB rating one year, most yards another, and best completion percentage in another has to be enough to take your breath away, and tell you there is something there.
Some take more comfort in the what could have or should have been, if this, that and the other happened, than others. We have to assume Tua will be a better player with a) health and b) a good O-line, but whether that will be breath taking remains to be seen. Most yards or best completion % but 8-9 with continued inability to score many points against top competition? Not breath taking.

Lead top 5 offense that averages 28-30 ppg while battling top competition like a legitimate contender, winning 11 games, the division and our first playoff game in a quarter century? That would take my breath away regardless of his comp %, yards or any other stat. Win a SB? Breath be outa here!

Most of the things that would take your breath away are team, and not individual, accomplishments.

Is this only a sports thing?

I won a big award at work last year. If I told my boss, I’m sitting out of work this year unless I get paid more, what are the possible outcomes?

No kidding but he is the biggest part of the puzzle and we are assuming good O Line play in this discussion. If the defense was so bad ala the Bengals this year, the team didn't make the playoffs despite an amazing year by Tua like we just saw with Burrow, he did likely accomplish a top 5 offense, 28-30 a game and compete legitimately against good teams' defenses. I think folks would take that into account and I think you get the point I was making. A completion % title isn't getting it done. Assuming a good O-line, Tua and the offense need to be meaningfully good, aka, an offense that can take you to a division title and deep into the playoffs given "solid" play in the other two phases.

To tie this back to Jonnu, I think Tua will have better chances to do the above with him and I'd rather not see him traded.
