Jonnu Smith Trade?

If we weren't allowed to know the player everyone was discussing in this thread you would think he was the second coming of Vernon Davis. A lot of yall need to come up for air, my god. hEs A pRo bOwLer what are we doing?!?!? Feel like 90% of this fanbase rode the short bus. Yea guys lets pay more for a guy whos gonna catch half the balls he caught last year. If he was a big part of what they were trying to do they would have payed him already. Hes not a game changer with the ball in his hands, he doesnt move the needle. There are 4 or 5 other guys id rather see get touches, good riddance, well done grier.

If they can improve with a combination of trades of Ramsey and Smith then fine.

But Smith was a productive player in a favorable contract within cap parameters.

The Dolphins need to knock it off with reacting to every player under contract wanting more money. Hold firm. Smith has no options. If you react every time a player grabs his rattle, players will come at you left and right. Smith agreed to a contract just last year.

Yeah, I’m not losing sleep over this move either way.

That's my issue too. Even with a bump his deal is still going to be a very favorable deal for the type of impact he will provide.

All TE trade transactions since 2020, highest comp was a 3rd for Darren Waller - https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/transactions/trade/_/start/2020-01-19/end/2025-05-30/position/te Second rounder is not realistic.
Exactly. Waller was also TIERS above Smith, and younger at the time too. The Giants, not exactly a sage front office, made a reckless deal when it was clear that the wheels were beginning to come off. Waller was never the same after 2020, and washed up after 1 year in NY. I suspect that Smith would wallow away a similar same vein, if traded to Pitt. The difference is that their FO isn't stupid enough to offer more than a 4th, tops.

They were used differently.

1. Smythe was a blocking TE, Jonnu can't block at all.

2. Gesicki was allergic to RAC which is what McD's offense is completely built around. Furthermore McD tried to make him into a blocking TE.....odd as heck.

The reason this makes sense for the Steelers is the way their offense works and the presence of real TE in Freiermuth. If the Steelers want to do a player to player I'll take Freiermuth for Jonnu any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

So we finally found a TE that McDaniel knows how to get the most out of and creates another weapon on offense, and we know he can thrive here and be a top TE. But you would rather take a chance with Freiermuth which Mcdaniel may use incorrectly like you mentioned with his previous TEs. Freiermuth is a couple years younger and better blocker than Jonnu.....and thats it. Not worth moving off Jonnu who was the most productive TE we ever had in Dolphins history!
Plus Freiermuth is one of the highest paid TE's right now. So this really wouldnt make sense for us. Freiermuth doesnt have the ceiling that Jonnu does in terms of being an actual weapon on offense.
The fact that Steelers are even interested in Jonnu tells you how they feel about Freiermuth.

Other than the game he won for us, and didn't move the needles? Dude was clutch for us.

Ehhhhh still produced as a top ten offense when Tua played. Averaged 25.5 points per game. Don't think the league "figured out" a whole lot.
Wrong! What happened to the deep passing game last year compared to the two seasons before that? It was non existent even when Tua played. Ya teams figured out how to defend the Dolphins regardless of how many points they averaged. Plus their offense still struggles against good teams.

Few reasons, offense was different. In the past we could run and pass block better so we had more opportunities over the top. This year we couldn’t run and pass blocking didn’t allow many deep shots so we went underneath more.

The other reason is we ran a ton of screens to Jonnu which other tight ends couldn’t do so in that aspect he’s much better.

Jonnu wouldn’t have the same effect this year unless things went wrong again and we continued to have a poor run game. NWI/malik and achane will take his short to mid touches

This is like saying that Tyreek isnt much better than our previous WR's because our offense was different then. Tyreek also gets alot of screens and short passes, does that mean he isnt much better than previous WRs before him?

If anything, an improved Oline will HELP the passing game overall and I dont see how Jonnu still wont be involved. Jonnu still produced with Hill, Waddle and Achane last year. Im sorry but a improved Oline and NWI/Malik aren't going to take targets away from Jonnu. I think that is less likely to happen unless Jonnu gets hurt. Malik barely played last year and NWI could be another Cedrick Wilson Jr. So you are assuming those guys make huge improvements. But we DO KNOW that Jonnu was VERY GOOD in this offense.

The Dolphins have to be thinking Westbrook-Ikhine is going to be able to provide what Jonnu gave them last year. Otherwise, this makes no sense.

This literally shouldn’t even be a thought. Taking a QB with injury issues and taking 1 of his 2 underneath options away lol. ****in clueless. I can’t wait to go 5-12 and blow this thing up.
This was always the problem with the big money Tua deal. When you spend this much money on Tua, you have less for the supporting cast, and Tua isn't the type that can do it on his own.
