Kiper on Phins Trading Up

I love jake matthews, best ot prospect in years. But it would cost too much to move up

HOW DID IT WORK FOR THEM? Have you seen there Defense lately? Oline in shambles, can't run the ball... Those picks they sent of in a sack were important

Now they are picking what 6 or 7 ?

Yeah, and then you look at us having 8 guys from the 2009-2011 draft, and no one being that good. It goes both ways.

Kevin Costner would trade up.

If either Watkins or Evans gets past Tampa at 7 (which I highly doubt), you should probably pick up the phone and see what the price is. Same goes for Donald if he gets by the Giants to the Rams at 13, since the Rams are really looking to move back, so all the sites say. But again, I don't see Donald getting by New York at 12.

You cannot trade up for a Right Tackle. The value of that position is nowhere near worth multiple picks, let alone the 10th pick itself. If we hadn't just signed a LT Albert, maybe Lewan is a trade-up option. But you can get fine RTs later on.

I'd like to try moving some late picks to get an additional second, but I'm guessing just about every team is thinking the same thing with this class.

Matthews is ELITE and would absolutely be worth the jump. That said...it would take some crazy stuff for the guy to fall to the 8-10 range. He's the #2 player in this draft IMO

Seems like you guys don't know what we need or who we need, screw the value all of you Kipers on here, RT is what this team needs then go and get it, if there is one you like better than the other then go get it, the team is not shopping, they're acquiring talent, you guys Kiper will say that Miami needs a RT but not that RT because of how he graded them. Mel Kiper is no more accurate we are lol.

We'll find a good OL man in later rounds. I never listen to Kiper anyhow. He can yap his mouth away as much as he wants, I will not listen to that clown.

we haven't had any luck getting linemen in later rounds so who knows.

Why do we have to trade up when they keep saying how this draft is filled with talented O-Linemen. We do not need to lose any draft picks.

Maybe it's time that Lady Luck starts channeling her energy our way. Who knows?

Still prefer to get the most talented guys instead of relying on luck but they both factor.
Jake Matthews would be perfect. I would be Ok with Martin at 19.
If Martin is gone I would trade down if there is a team willing.
I would also trade dion Jordan to the Eagles for their first round pick and whatever else I could pry out of them.
There are quite few defensive players of his ability in this draft and if we could get an extra third or more in the deal why not.
Too many are stuck on where we picked him.

Trade up....for Jake Matthews....no....pass....I don't want 10-15 year starters with pro-bowl potential...

I get that ... but just so we are on the same page, would you consider drafting Mike Pouncey to have been a mistake? RT clearly has a higher value than C and we made Pouncey the highest drafted C in the history of the NFL.

The argument is that even were he to have a HoF career, the position doesn't merit a #15 overall selection. He definitely isn't playing at a HoF clip yet, and his off field questions have somewhat tarnished fans' perception of him. In Hindsight grabbing Nate Solder would have been the best move, but hindsight is 20/20.

So do you consider Pouncey a bad choice?

I agree completely. The goal isn't to create a valuable collection of expensive art. The goal is to build a great football team, and that demands filling specific positions.

A team can choose to prioritize getting value in free agency over need, or choosing the BPA in the draft over need, but failing to address need means you fail at the goal of building a great football team.

Last year we should have surrounded our young franchise QB with talent with which to grow for years to come. I was advocating guys like Tyler Eifert or Cordarrelle Patterson and was hoping we could trade down and still get someone like that. Then with our two 2nds we could grab more help and still be in position to grab sliding talent. Instead Ireland went for who he thought was the BPA and lost his job.

We FAILED to address our obvious need at LT by resigning Jake Long and as I repeatedly predicted, Jonathan Martin failed miserably. We could have selected Lane Johnson, who appears to be becoming an excellent OT with the definitive skill set to play LT. But we didnt. We could have signed Albert last year ... but we didnt. The result was one of the 10 most sacked seasons ever in the NFL. Not exactly building around a young QB.

So, we solved LT in free agency. Good. Now we have to fill RT, LG and RG, and we missed the boat on doing that well in free agency. I just hope we don't fail again to address our glaring needs. Ideally it would have been through free agency, but decent OL was pricey this offseason, so we painted ourselves into a corner for the draft.

I wasn't crazy about the Pouncey pick at the time, no. But it was better than moving up for a RT for a few reasons...

1) It didn't cost multiple picks in a deep draft.
2) He's a special athlete for the position, a unique player, and was by far the best interior OLineman in that class.
3) His brother being a stud from day 1 was a factor, imo. Maurkice was a Pro Bowler as a rookie, I believe. The odds of Mike busting were very very slim.
4) Our other options weren't all that great. I wanted Amukamara or Bruce Carter, who I was very high on. But we had recently drafted 2 CBs high and Carter was undervalued across the League, imo. That draft was top-heavy with stud prospects all through the top 10, and all those elite guys went before our pick. Robert Quinn went one spot ahead of us :shakeno:

This deep draft has impact players that can be had at 19. And if you're talking about moving up to 10 or so, you're going to have a nice choice of prospects who all play higher impact positions. This draft is also deep and has mid-round options for RT. You have to play to where the value in the draft is, to an extent. Some of this is the low value of RT, and some of this is the specifics of this class.

If you're really sold on filling that RT hole in the first round...I don't see why you'd use extra picks to get Lewan when you can just sit at 19 and draft Moses or James, who both look like they have a good shot at being day 1 starters.
