I get that ... but just so we are on the same page, would you consider drafting Mike Pouncey to have been a mistake? RT clearly has a higher value than C and we made Pouncey the highest drafted C in the history of the NFL.
The argument is that even were he to have a HoF career, the position doesn't merit a #15 overall selection. He definitely isn't playing at a HoF clip yet, and his off field questions have somewhat tarnished fans' perception of him. In Hindsight grabbing Nate Solder would have been the best move, but hindsight is 20/20.
So do you consider Pouncey a bad choice?
I wasn't crazy about the Pouncey pick at the time, no. But it was better than moving up for a RT for a few reasons...
1) It didn't cost multiple picks in a deep draft.
2) He's a special athlete for the position, a unique player, and was by far the best interior OLineman in that class.
3) His brother being a stud from day 1 was a factor, imo. Maurkice was a Pro Bowler as a rookie, I believe. The odds of Mike busting were very very slim.
4) Our other options weren't all that great. I wanted Amukamara or Bruce Carter, who I was very high on. But we had recently drafted 2 CBs high and Carter was undervalued across the League, imo. That draft was top-heavy with stud prospects all through the top 10, and all those elite guys went before our pick. Robert Quinn went one spot ahead of us :shakeno:
This deep draft has impact players that can be had at 19. And if you're talking about moving up to 10 or so, you're going to have a nice choice of prospects who all play higher impact positions. This draft is also deep and has mid-round options for RT. You have to play to where the value in the draft is, to an extent. Some of this is the low value of RT, and some of this is the specifics of this class.
If you're really sold on filling that RT hole in the first round...I don't see why you'd use
extra picks to get Lewan when you can just sit at 19 and draft Moses or James, who both look like they have a good shot at being day 1 starters.
