Kiper on Phins Trading Up

Martin looks very good but if he is gone, then we select XSF. One of the 2 should still be there. If both are gone then it will mean other highly regarded players have dropped and we go BPA.

Ju'wan James could be a possibility with a trade back. I think the top 4 tackles are gone by 19 and Bitonio I think belongs at OG. I am still sticking by that.

Ju'wan James is an immediate starter. Good player.

I just posted about James in another thread but since you mention it here...

Adam Beasley, Miamii Herald:
Sources say Miami has first-round grades on just five tackles: Martin, Lewan, Jake Matthews (Texas A&M), Greg Robinson (Auburn) and Ja’Wuan James (Tennessee).

As the draft gets closer, do the Fins draft on "need" or BPA? I am starting to think that there is going to be a MAJOR run on OT's.

I think the top 4 kids are going before 19. Plus, the scuttlebutt of James, Bitonio and Moses entering the first round….wow…does Miami have to jump into that run.

Yeah, there might be a drop from the top guys to Moses, but the drop from Moses to Hurst, Schofield, Mewhort is precipitous.

I have advocated BPA, but as this draft gets closer, do you need to pull the trigger with one of the higher rated OT's?

Anyone that uses the word precipitous in a football post is for darn sure worth listening to, lol.

Thanks for rollin' the gold, Hayden!

I'll probably be labeled a heretic as well as a Madden trader, but what if we could trade up to catch a sliding tackle (not Martin) in the early teens by packaging Olivier Vernon? Now I realize players are rarely included in such 2st round trades as their valuation is low in comparison to picks (be that wrong or not), but after his first two seasons, Vernon has legitimately outplayed his (top of the) 3rd round draft position. If some team were to value him as a 2nd/3rd round value, perhaps he can serve as valuable ammo. This of course would also free up a slot for Jordan to start at DE.

#19, 3rd round & Vernon to draft Matthews? Heartbeat. Do it for Ryan.

Yes, you're a heretic. Ireland finally makes a really good draft pick in Olivier Vernon and finds a DE with great potential and good character and you want to trade him away. Dude, we have bought our LT for the future. His name is Branden Albert.

Tis the season of misinformation. Agents are pumping up their players and teams who want to trade down are trying to create urgency for those of us desperate for OT's. I can only hope Hickey stays true to his player evaluation process and doesn't panic.

If there is a run, maybe we should stay pat and pick another guy who could help us as suggested below from http://www.drafttek.com/2014-NFL-Mock-Draft-Round1b.asp

However, if we do go O-line. I would prefer we don't reach for an OT, but instead take arguably the best OG available in XSF.

Xavier Su’a-Filo, UCLA: Put simply, as far as I’m concerned, the 2014 draft class at guard consists of Su’a-Filo and a few tiers of Everybody Else. There’s nobody else who possesses his combination of root strength, understanding of technique and agility to the second level. He has the versatility to play left tackle — which he did for the Bruins at times — but at his heart, Su’a-Filo has the nasty streak you like in an elite guard. Basically, he’s an ass-kicker, and he’s proud of that.

“Honestly, I don’t watch a whole lot of guys who kind of remind me of me,” Su’a-Filo said at the scouting combine. “I watch a lot of the guys I try to pattern my game after. I watch a lot of Logan Mankins, left guard from the New England Patriots. I think Logan, he was a high draft pick, but he’s physical. He’s a bad-ass, he started from Day 1 in New England, and I love how nasty he is, something about his game that I really try to implement.”

It all adds up to a guy who should hear his name called in the first 20 picks, and the most exciting guard prospect I’ve seen since Stanford’s David DeCastro.

Draft projection: Mid-Round 1

A few years ago Atlanta traded almost everything to move up to get Jones. It worked for them. However their situation was a little different. Jones is a high impact WR and not a RT. Also Atlanta was closer to getting to a super bowl than we are now if we sold the farm on one player especially a RT. I would not trade up this year if I am looking for a RT early because this draft is deep at OL.

HOW DID IT WORK FOR THEM? Have you seen there Defense lately? Oline in shambles, can't run the ball... Those picks they sent of in a sack were important

Now they are picking what 6 or 7 ?

Only way the Dolphins move up is to get Clowney. Not a bad defensive front Wake, Jordan, Clowney, Starks, Mitchell, Odrick, Vernon; but, this time of the year it's all smoke and mirrors. No way..

uh no..................................! No!!! No!! No!!!! Remeber we have Wake, Vernon and Jordan to get in snaps
