Kyle Eckel

Napoleon McCallum (forgive me if I've misspelled his name!) actually came to work in my unit in L.A. shortly after his graduation. The Navy liked the visibility he gave... it was good for recruiting. The service made him very available to the Raiders. So much so that I never saw him except the day he reported!!! I don't think he really ever missed a snap for Navy business.

Kyle

I got to see him up close last year (from the sidelines) when they played army and the kid is a monster. Reminded me of Barryesque - feet never stopped moving, and when he knew he wasn't getting around a LB or 2 he just lowered his helmet and bulldozes in. He has huge potential.

And if you're wondering how I saw it from the sidelines. I travel from West Point w/the Army Football team to there driveable away games. I'm a NYS Trooper and lead their motorcade. An awesome time.

I saw Eckel play for the Navy against Air Force here in Colorado Springs....he is a quality guy and hope he can help us. I think he ran for about 170 yards against Air Force recently.

I was thinking of Oct. 4, 2003 against Air Force:

LANDOVER, Maryland (Ticker) -- Kyle Eckel rushed for a
career-high 176 yards as Navy defeated a ranked opponent for the
first time in 18 years with a 28-25 win over No. 25 Air Force.

holy crap....air force was ranked at one time?

and their football team is kind of an oxymoron. with a name like air force, they should not be running the option.

I'm not so excited about this personally. Don't get me wrong, the guy is a helluva player. The problem comes in that he is a Mike Alstott type. He is so-so as a blocker. His forte is running the ball. More importantly, the Navy option offense relied more on confusion than anything. They ran the exact same formation with the exact same motion a majority of the time. In plain words, the teams didn't know whether Eckel was getting it, the WR was getting it on a reverse, the QB was keeping it, or the HB was taking it on a run in the A-gap, B-gap, on a sweep, or a pull.

The problem is 2-fold. First, there is little place in the modern NFL for a Mike Alstott type back. A FB is primarily a lead blocker these days. Secondly, is Ecker really that good? Or was he benefitting from the confusion caused by multiple play-actions in a single play? I think he may not be as good as advertised, which is reinforced by the fact that he went undrafted. A solid pick up none-the-less. Definately a project though......

On a side note, the guy hits like a truck......

glad to see you had the time to do some posting....but yeah, I told KB yesterday that when I saw him, he really minded me of how Alstott played. He had a few good runs this preseason, and did run through a few guys for a TD a few weeks back
