Lamar Miller- 5th in NFL rushing yard / 2nd in YPC

Defenses baits the offense into making a throw, and disguises what they are doing, like if they see that formation they can have the DE/OLB defend that pass. Rex Ryan does this a lot. Anyways, its not a play you have in your bread basket anyways. Teams will prerp for it now, and I doubt we use it anytime soon.

I think you are missing the option aspect of the play. The DE/OLB can try to defend the screen pass all they want but if there is a true option to the play, the QB will just hand the ball off to the running back because the defense have left themselves vulnerable to it. Another option for the defense to consider from that formation is that it may not always be WR screen.

I am not missing the option aspect of the play. In fact, I am using an example of how a defense forces the option. You are assuming the OC knows what the DE/OLB is going to do based on the formation. Again, its a defensive trap play. Not sure you understand what a defensive trap play is. They bait you into thinking they are defending the run, so you check out of the run and pass it, much like we did in the play cited in this thread. Instead of defending the run, you send your DE/LB to defend that screen pass or hot route. I know Rex Ryan does this all the time, as do many other 3-4 defensive coaches. If Lazor uses this play next week, send me a PM and I will eat crow. But I'd bet money he doesnt.

I'm not assuming anything. Based on the formation there is only so much a DE/OLB can do and they are defend the run, rush the QB or try to defend the pass/screen. As I said before, if it a true option, it is up to the QB not the OC to read the defense. Sure the defender can jump the screen if he knows it's coming but that is true with all screen passes from any formation.

Yes the defense can bait the offense into something that is favorable for them but that's the beauty of football, the chess match between the offense and defense on each and every play.

As far as the Dolphins not running that play again, they ran it again to the left side after the pass interference call on Sims.

What you are describing with the DE/OLB defending the screen pass or hot route instead of the run is the zone blitz.

Lamar Miller is like a different guy so far this season. He can really accelerate through the hole in an uncommon way. He deserves credit for his improvement.

The run blocking and scheme are doing outstanding with the run game too, but Lamar deserves his own credit.

By the way, our recent 4th rounders have been coming on. 2012, Lamar Miller. 2013, Jelani Jenkins and Dion Sims. 2014, it's early but Walt Aikens. Those are some nice pieces. We hit like that regularly in most rounds, and you develop a good roster. More, please.

Sorry man, but as much as you say the offense is in an option, so is the defense. And if they weren't taken by surprise and could study that formation on film, the defense will have the advantage every time. I'll stand by that statement.

Coach Benton deserves a lot of credit for the improved rushing attack this season, but so does Bill Lazor.

This this this this this. Benton had fantastic offensive lines at the Texans. He is showing the same trend here.

5 new starters and they are getting the job done -- though Buffalo killed our OL with 4 guys and stunts.

Thought experiment: What would we be saying about this OL if it was the same 5 guys, and Jim Turner as coach???

Benton and better talent. It is no coincidence. Miller has also improved. He seems like one of those guys that slowly gets better. His best ball may still be in front of him.

Jim "turnstyle' Turner?

Spreading all the WR out wide helped as well so give Lazor some credit also. Miller's not going to break a lot of tackles but give him a hole to run through and he's 20 yards down field before you know it.
Moreno and him with Pouncy up front should be fun to watch.

I'm actually a little afraid that Pouncey is going to screw up the chemistry. I can't believe I'm saying this 5 years later, but Satele has done a good job. I wonder if Satele can slide into RG and replace Dallas Thomas.

Satele was good against the corpse of Vince Wilfork (as hoops might say) and the Raiders DL. He struggled badly against the Bills and KC.

We need Pouncey back. Satele was good enough to help us get to 2-2, but we need Mike Pouncey in the worst possible way.

The middle of the line against Buffalo and KC hurt us.

Shore up the middle (Brady always insists that his OL be strong up the middle) and let Albert stay healthy and James develop. It will be much better.

And if Tannehill gets even decent protection, he's gonna throw dimes all day long.

I think is a credit to the O-line. Miller has done a great job stepping up, certainly not trying to take anything away from him. However the O-line is giving him good holes and he has always had incredible burst. Thats why you see him hitting these 15-20 yard runs. His burst is ridiculous, his problems has always been vision and getting yards after contact…which IMO he still isn't great at but at least he's trying to improve. Offense still definitely needs Moreno back though…he's a perfect fit for this offense.

Good to see the OL starting to get some love.......they deserve it....

The good news is I really feel like there's potential there. I know Billy Turner still has some issues with his pass protection technique, but he brings such a great attitude, such strength, that I think they just have to try to find a way to get him in there. He straight up destroys people on running plays and when his pass blocking technique holds up, he's a rock. The guy is so strong, it's just night and day from Dallas Thomas.

Last year was ridiculous with 65% pass and 35% run, got to stick to it and keep the QB attempts down.

Which is why we had so many 3 and outs in 2013, we never ran early to set up the pass and usually ended up with 3rd and longs. It also didn't help that the OL rarely allowed any room for the backs to roam in. Thinking back on it, it is honestly amazing that last year's team even won 8 games to begin with.

The talk of cutting him from people was asinine. He's young with some flaws, but people are way too hard on him here. He's a quality change of pace back that is showing he can be even a little more than that.
