I played football in North Carolina. People think I'm joking when I tell them I've probably had 20 concussions......Now, you have to understand what concussions are to
realize what you had, as I realized after I became an EMT. Even there, if you get your "Bell rung" you stay in the game if you can, because if you can't, you
may loose your spot that you've been working for since Junior High. You rub some dirt on it, get up and drive on.
I personally never saw any pain killers and all that stuff, but football in NC is less intense than in lots of other places.
But the fact of the matter was, if you can't go, the next guy plays, and you may never get back on the field.
The lessons in football stayed with me in life. If made me laugh, but when I went to work in the
prison system, the first time I suited up for a team, my SGT smacked me on the helmet and said....
"Go git him. You can't get hurt."
I knew what that meant. I can't be hurt, or I'm off the team.
"Welcome to the team. If you get hurt, you're off the team."
Guys that get "Hurt" on Forced Move Teams don't get to participate
in them anymore. Which may, or may not hurt one's feelings. There's
no bonus money. There's only a real opportunity to get in trouble.
I was in the Army. If you are on "Profile" you are useless to your unit that
depends on you. You are "Less than" a soldier, by in large opinion.
I really like this colum..It's a product of lots of things I've heard Taylor say on LeBetards
show before. IT's a real world, and, it hurts. But that's part of it. It's what
you do to remain a part of it, and I guess I understand the logic.
Plus, my wife is one of those chicks that like guys with scars :)
