LeBatard: Jason Taylor's pain shows NFL's world of hurt

I played football in North Carolina. People think I'm joking when I tell them I've probably had 20 concussions......Now, you have to understand what concussions are to
realize what you had, as I realized after I became an EMT. Even there, if you get your "Bell rung" you stay in the game if you can, because if you can't, you
may loose your spot that you've been working for since Junior High. You rub some dirt on it, get up and drive on.

I personally never saw any pain killers and all that stuff, but football in NC is less intense than in lots of other places.
But the fact of the matter was, if you can't go, the next guy plays, and you may never get back on the field.

The lessons in football stayed with me in life. If made me laugh, but when I went to work in the
prison system, the first time I suited up for a team, my SGT smacked me on the helmet and said....

"Go git him. You can't get hurt."

I knew what that meant. I can't be hurt, or I'm off the team.

"Welcome to the team. If you get hurt, you're off the team."

Guys that get "Hurt" on Forced Move Teams don't get to participate
in them anymore. Which may, or may not hurt one's feelings. There's
no bonus money. There's only a real opportunity to get in trouble.

I was in the Army. If you are on "Profile" you are useless to your unit that
depends on you. You are "Less than" a soldier, by in large opinion.

I really like this colum..It's a product of lots of things I've heard Taylor say on LeBetards
show before. IT's a real world, and, it hurts. But that's part of it. It's what
you do to remain a part of it, and I guess I understand the logic.

Plus, my wife is one of those chicks that like guys with scars :)

Kurt Cobain ofted himself with a shotgun too...better ban people from being a part of a Rock Band too?
I don't think that was the point of the column.

But, one could argue we should ban booze and drugs in the name of public health.

****. I don't know about anyone else, but that made me tear up in places. Taylor is my all time favorite Dolphins player and knowing he did all that just to earn a pay check and entertain us. I am completely humbled.
He's not that much different than any other NFL player in terms of what he went through.

Yes...and while were at it lets just take away freedom as well...its just too dangerous.

I well aware of the point of the column, my point was suicide and mental illness are not exclusive too football and the bit concerning Seau in the article was in my opinion out of place.

I'd agree with that.

Talk about a reality check to the gut. Saaaadddddddddddddd Trip.

Man, I would really like to believe that I would gladly take the amount money these guys make for the physical pain they endure, but it's certainly much easier to say that from my desk than when taking a needle up my foot. These guys put themselves through agonizing pain for their pride and their paychecks. Although I don't necessarily endorse players making as much money as they do, because in all reality it is just a sport, there is no question that many of the pro athletes destroy their bodies for something that is just a sport, and that kind of dedication in a multi-billion dollar industry deserves some kind of compensation.

Pro players give their livelihood for a hefty paycheck and for national and international recognition. Instead of pursuing a ho-hum job they put themselves in harm's way to provide for their families (and mistresses) and provide entertainment for millions of individuals around the world. Hearing stories of toenails that just fall off during training camp from the constant grind, and "routine" knee draining is gut-wrenching. Given the opportunity to make that much bank, I would like to believe that I would endure that much pain for that much money, but again, it's a lot easier said than done when I'm sitting behind a computer typing this up.

Sad part is he never got the respect he deserved for this, because no one knew.

A true soldier...

Great article! I can only imagine what goes on in these players lives that we don't see. My respect for Taylor just went up a notch....and I've always respected the hell out of him. A really great read is "You're okay, it's just a bruise" written in '94 by Rob Huizenga, the LA Raiders former team doctor. Stories in there you won't believe.

And to think there's lots of people on this board that called him "The Dancing Queen".
I wasn't one of 'em.

I played the NFL game for over 9 years before I finally had to give it up. Although I don't have any of the horror stories JT has, the arthritis in my playing thumbs make it hard for me to even hold a controler any more. But just like JT to do miss playing...

Is it Basal joint arthritis? http://www.eatonhand.com/hw/hw003.htm ( I also have it)

hmm, hard to hold a controller you say....Well, next "season" look me up on Madden! ROFL

I'm having both of my cataracts done in August so now I'll be able to see passing icons and I even be able to tell one team from another etc. I'm going to stun some peeps this year.

Good one....but did you win any championships on the Madden level before you were done?

O SNAP, you did not just diss Madden!
