Les Brown, who starred at BYU Pro Day, signs with Dolphins

Good Job GM. When this guys ankle heals his physical skills will improve more and now that he is signed he can come into OTAs and workouts like a professional. the good thing is we know he has good hands and can catch. Tony Gonzalez was a power forward basketball in College and Gates I think played small or power forward too. Basketball players who have played football I think can more easily transition to the NFL. I think we found out seam TE and good special teams player. A TE who runs 4.4 down the field on punts and kickoffs can really help.

This is a very intriguing signing. Even if it doesn't pan out, you have to give Ireland credit for trying. The risk/reward is great in this case.

Come on people. We didn't give up anything to sign this guy. He has a lot of great physical ability and showed at his pro day that he has good hands. Yes he's raw as hell but maybe he can be a guy we stash on the practice squad and let him get experience. At worst he gets cut and we're out nothing. Never know when you uncover a gem. It's just called taking a chance with zero risk involved.

Finally something I agree with you about! Bunch of Debbie Downers up in this joint!

I like that he gets out of his breaks fast, whips his head quick, and he catches ball at its highest point. no doubt in my mind that he took performance enhancing drugs though. Im sorry but, you dont gain 25 pounds of muscle in 8 weeks. Its physically impossible but, with that said, I would do the same thing if i wanted to go to the pros and had that kind of hight and speed.
He gained 38 pounds of muscle in 8 weeks. That takes most people years. Most definitely on PEDs.

Get him in the weight room, add ten pounds, then throw him on the field. Luv the fact that he has a mean streak as well, albeit self proclaimed.

I'm sure Chargers fans were saying the same thing when they signed some former b-ball player named Antonio Gates. You can't coach speed and athleticism. No one is overrating anything, but apparently he intrigued several teams and the Phins signed him. Kudos to the Phins FO

Never said one negative about the signing just gave a very realistic view. If teams were so convinced that this guy was such a freak and will be a good football player Im sure there would be a small scale bidding war. Hell until we heard we signed him nobody knew who this guy was. I agree you cant coach speed and athleticsim but the failed road of nfl prsopects is littered with guys who have speed and athleticism but are not good football players. I mean how many on this board have looked at the Jets signing of the rugby player as a genius move.

I know you dont believe these things but
Every former basketball player is not going to be Antonio Gates
Every overaged qb is not going to be Roger Staubach(who at least Dallas had the common sense not to draft him high) In todays NFL he would not have been drafted most likely since he was a 10th round pick)
Every small school qb is not Joe Flacco
Every CFL player is not Cam Wake.
Every arena player is not Orande Gadsen.

Vince Papale

Well the movie convieniently left out that Papale had played two years of football in the WFL prior to signing with the Eagles, thats what actually got him the try out .
Papale also did not play college football though since his college did not have a football team.

Also back to my Staubach comment he and Weeden's story are not even close to similar since he was drafted before a military commitment but he was a stud college qb at Navy.

It seems like the Tight End position is the one area Miami always seems to forget about. I am trying to think of the Tight Ends that the Dolphins have had over the years and I can't think of anyone who was really great. I would probably rank Randy McMichael as the top TE in a Phin's uniform, followed by Bruce Hardy, Keith Byars who was a hybrid FB/TE, Keith Jackson, Jim Mandich and then maybe Fasano? None of them close to being Hall of Famers. It would be nice if we could focus a little more on this position the way the Patriots do. I think getting a guy like Brown, or someone with basketball skills and great hands, may be the way to go.

These are the kind of signings why i dont bury Ireland all the time. He reaches out and gets these type of kids (Wake, Messam, and now Les Brown). I cant wait to see Brown and Messam in camp hopefully they will produce and make the roster.

Staubach and weeden are similar stories in that both are and will be 28 year old rookies. Both left to spend about 4 years doing something else. One the Navy and the other professional baseball. Both were stud QBs in College. I see lots of similarities. If Staubach was draft after he came back from the Military and had he had a combine like we have now he would be drafted similar to Weeden.

Might be drafted higher since he was easily best qb in college football before he went to service. The main difference is the cowboys basically had to invest nothing to get Staubach and many people want to invest a high pick in Weeden .
