Longest tenured NFL coaches- Coach Mike McDaniel is 18th

I get the frustration, but as I have said before all of your posts end up in the same place
I get why you'd say this. In my defense, as a long-time die-hard Dolphins fan, I'm sick and tired of seeing them be irrelevant for so long. The Marino era was fun to watch too, and though it ended without a ring, at least they won a bunch of playoff games. After that, it was mostly frustration year after year. It's not easy to watch what at one time was the winningest team in all of professional sports turn into the franchise with the longest playoff win drought.

Others see the current team under McDaniel as the beginning of something special. I thought the same thing early on when they were taking the league by storm with lots of big, exciting plays. However, McDaniel wasn't so great when faced with adversity, and when both seasons ended the same way (high Seeds within their grasp, but they ended up barely making the playoffs where they immediately lost), whatever hope I had turned into frustration and anger for teasing me.

That said, it's possible that I'm wrong, and McDaniel is the one to lead the team back to relevancy. However, I won't believe it until I see it. IMO, those impressive offensive stats would mean a lot more to me if they were acquired by beating their share of good teams and going into the playoffs as one of the Top Seeds, instead of racking up stats against bad teams, losing to the good teams, and never earning a better playoff berth than the 6th Seed. They have a bunch of talent on that team (except for the o-line ), so when McDaniel learns how to use them more effectively and starts beating top teams and winning playoff games, then I'll change my tune.

Ever letting go of MM would be a huge mistake. He is at the heart of what makes this team and offense special. Most innovative coach we have ever had other than Shula.

Coach Shula was a lot of things. I don't think I would describe him as "innovative".

I think he has done good job. Still need improve in certain area. Remember goal is to win or go to SB.

Although he didn’t invent it, he’s pretty much the person who popularized the nickel defense in the NFL.
It had been used at least a decade prior by Philidelphia, and given the name by a bears DC years prior.

As to it being popularized by Shula, I would say Arnsparger had far more to do with it's employment by the Dolphins.

Can't give the Don innovation point here, IMO.

You are entitled to it.

Do you think I'm wrong? And it wasn't Bill that implemented it?

In any case, historical fact is pretty clear the innovation was made by others, is it not?

I like MM too but Flores went 19-14 in his two non-organizationally tanking seasons (2020-2021) and McDaniel has gone 20-14 in his two seasons (2022-2023).

The game difference is because the extra 17th game season didn't kick in until 2021.

One created an elite offense with a decent defense. The other had had one of the worst offenses that was only in games because of the defense. Their records were similar but their coaching ability was not.

Edit - Interesting perception. I'd argue it's the reverse, or at least a wash, that McDaniel's coached one of the worst defenses and only in games because of the offense and Flores' offenses were "decent".

McDaniel's defenses in points per game ranked 24th in 2022 and 22nd in 2023. Flores' offense in points per game ranked 15th in 2020 and 22nd in 2021.

I am hoping Coach Weaver can get the defense right where it needs to be before he becomes a HC in the league brother. :ffic:
