Magoo's Keys to the Game (Patriots edition)

i don't see where the patriots have the kind of ends you need to run the 43 right now...i mean whos gonna man them??? ninko and cunningham??? good luck with that...i think you can run off tackle against either of these guys and they're not gonna hold up at the poa...i just don't see the horses for them to run the scheme on the outside

i must be missing something...

You are. They signed Andre Carter, a RDE formerly of the Redskins. He's 32 years old and has had some good years, including an 11 sack year two years ago. I'm not sure who the LDE is for them in this new scheme. I mean, it hasn't even been confirmed that they're switching to the 4-3 full time.

We'll see. I've heard more than one analyst basically repeat my first point in this thread about running on the perimeter. I know I like the idea of Long trying to seal Carter inside and Wilfork trying to "race" Bush to the edge. A crackback block by Marshall on a linebacker and it could be out the gate.

Solid tackling from our defense is what's going to either save/kill us. The Pats thrive on the YAC. If we keep everything in front and don't miss tackles, I think we'll be OK. Not a win necessarily, but we won't get blown out...

hard to get out the gate hell hard to get out of the stables when its slow *** larry johnson your trying to run wide with...boy does this suck

i would expect the pats to be ready for wide runs with reggie bush...hell bouncing things wide has been his mo since he came in the league...i don't expect that to change tonight with wilfork clogging the middle

Very nice writeup, Magoo. Great food for thought.

Defensively, I think we need to be masters of coverage. We'll limit their production in the run game anyway - that's a great matchup for us. I think our corners can keep their WR corps pretty quiet. So it's all about covering the short pass game to welker and the TEs and Woodheads ability to get around the corner. Burnett, Jones, Misi and Bell need a big night.

Offensively, i totally agree with Magoo about attacking their perimeter. It's a shame Clay is inactive as he would have been an extra weapon in that respect. But it's a clear weakness of theirs against a newfound strengh of ours.

I worry about Henne having no pocket to work in. I can see us keeping their edge rush at bay and getting steamrollered up the middle. Henne's mobility so far doesn't extend to him peeling out left or right by much so I can see him getting snagged a few times.

Ok, I'm not big on these "My Post-Game Thoughts" kinds of threads, but I thought I would take a look at what happened with my "Keys."

When the Dolphins are on offense:

1. Attack the Perimeter.
Grade: D
They tried a few times but something always seemed to go wrong. From a mixup between Bush and Henne on one play to Fasano making a poor block which allowed his man to pick off Pouncey, who was pulling, on another. Bush not being able to break Ninkovitch's tackle on a flare. Little things derailed this plan, and when push came to shove they didn't commit to it, prefering -- inexplicably -- to run inside almost exclusively in the 2nd half. It didn't work and it's not going to work. They didn't use a single WR screen that I saw (also inexplicable, given we have good RAC wide receivers). We also only tried one RB screen. Just bizarre.

2. Exploit how they play Bush.
Grade: D
I thought the use of Bush overall was substandard. We didn't find creative ways to get him matched up on linebackers enough. We didn't get him in space enough. They basically used him like they would any running back, and that's both stupid and a waste. Ahmad Bradshaw could have done every "special" play they had planned and can also run up the middle.

3. Don't get TOO aggressive.
Grade: A
Henne's command was palpable and the Patriots were never able to bait him into making a mistake. We'll see how it goes from here on in but it was a very encouraging performance, obviously. I'm not one to spike the ball prematurely and declare victory but I think all those posters who were talking about Henne as if he was one of the worst quarterbacks in the league and a guy who needed to be replaced at any cost certainly should be taking a long look in the mirror today. For posters like myself and RobertHorry, this part of the night was fun to watch (though it wasn't perfect, certainly).

4. Who's in the Pats' secondary?
Grade: INC
This was more of a question that a suggestion, so it doesn't get a grade. One thing that certainly surprised me was how well Ras I Dowling played. I mean, the guy has talent, but he didn't break apart like the T-1000 in Terminator 2, which was odd. Henne did take advantage of FS James Barrett once on the touchdown to Hartline, and exploited matchups pretty well all night. Marshall got the best of McCourty, which was good to see considering he faces Jonathan Joseph this week.

5. Reacting to changes.
Grade: C
We threw the ball well but our inability to find ways to run the ball pissed me off. As I said in the VIP chat after the game, our failure in short yardage was really the downfall of our offense and maybe the game. We didn't use Larry Johnson in short yardage, which was perplexing. The only short yardage play that worked was the old Lou Polite fullback dive with Lex Hilliard, yet we did it once successfully and then abandoned it. All in all, our offense reminded me a lot of the Saints' offense on Thursday night. A huge passing performance laid low by an inability to convert in short yardage in the red zone.

When the Dolphins were on defense.

1. Contain Hernandez and Welker.
Grade: F
Only because there isn't a grade lower than F. Our coverage guys lost their man on man matchups consistently. My warnings about keeping Nolan Carroll off the field also proved prescient, sadly. He was awful. As others have noted, Jones was very poor. The communication was lacking all night. We couldn't force enough incompletions to regroup, leading to a zombie-like state on defense where we were pretty much in the same defense play after play. Watching the Patriots' offense -- especially Hernandez and Welker -- against our defense was like watching Gerry Cooney punch a slumped over Ken Norton, Jr. 15 times in the head.

2. Exploit the focus on Wake.
Grade: F
Wake himself had one of his worst games as a pro, in my opinion. And his inability to beat Solder consistently destroyed any chance we had to build on that. The only guy who got even something remotely similar to consistent pressure was Randy Starks.

3. Conditioning on the defensive line.
Grade: F
Our conditioning overall was poor. But our inability to get pressure and force incompletions was a factor here, as I thought it would be.

4. Don't get too pass happy.
Grade: D
Woodhead was able to run pretty consistently, especially early on... enough at least to keep our defense honest, which hurt us in other ways. We weren't getting to Brady but we were also undisciplined in our rush lanes, which is like adding an ugly face to a bad personality.

5. Watch for Woodhead and Ridley out of the backfield.
Grade: INC
This ended up not being a factor in the game.

Overall these ended up being many of the major factors in the game. I didn't think pass protection would be a huge issue in this game, and though it wasn't good it wasn't one of the things the game turned on (next week is a much bigger test). I certainly didn't realize that Reshad Jones would be so bad, though I preferred to have Clemons in this game for his soundness and intelligence. I knew the Patriots would run a quick pace but I didn't know they would run it this much, so that was something I missed (though the conditioning issue was one of my "keys"). I didn't see Fasano being as big a factor in the game as he was, so good for him. I knew short yardage would be a problem but I didn't expect it to be this big a problem. But apparently it is, and I don't think Daniel Thomas is going to fix it.

Andre Carter would've been a great signing two years ago but I'm not huge on him now. Their other DE is Shaun Ellis btw.

For what it's worth, just as a preview:

In my view the Texans' defense will be a more difficult task than the Patriots' defense. A much worse matchup in the front seven, in my view. Their offense isn't as good as the Patriots' but the key will be discipline. Our front seven needs to maintain discipline to stop the Texans, with a particularly big dose of the responsibility on Cameron Wake and Koa Misi's shoulders to protect against the bootleg. If we don't maintain precise lanes, they'll kill us, and I mean dead. I still have a lot of tape to watch but that's my initial diagnosis.

Mr. Magoo did you see the Texans first game??? I know they played Kerry Collins and the helpless Colts but I was wondering how their secondary was this year. It couldn't get any worse than last year and I was wondering if they've made any major improvements? I think we could have a big game passing if we give Henne enough time and keep Mario Williams away from him.

I'm working on breaking it down right now. It's time consuming work so I'm about 4 minutes till the end of the first half right now. So far the Colts have had a bunch of turnovers and miscues on offense so it's been hard to get a bead on their secondary. The main thing that frightens me though is the Texans' front seven, especially their linemen, and especially JJ Watt. They're going to get after our offensive line in a bad way. You can count on it.

On a defense with a former #1 overall pick (Mario Williams) a former defensive ROY (Brian Cushing) and a 2x Pro Bowler and one time All Pro (DeMeco Ryans), Watt might already be their best player. That's how good he's looked.

JJ Watt has been a revelation throughout the preseason and the first game, but Antonio Smith (DE on the opposite side) has really really taken to getting pressure on the QB from his DE spot. Against the Colts he forced one of the fumbles (The other was a botched snap) and recorded the sack that Super Mario didn't get. I'd say the big weakpoint of the Texans front 7 comes from the NT spot where it is manned by perennial suckmaster Shaun Cody, and relative new guy Earl Mitchell.

If I were a Dolphins coordinator, it'd be A gap runs all day long and I'd try to make Cushing and Ryans prove they can play ILB in the 3-4 as well as make the nose try to stop me.
