Mando: Complex Decision of Firing Philbin's Assistants

The potential trade has nothing to do with what I am talking about. My point from a few posts ago was that I am TIRED of people blaming everything BUT the head coach. Was the line good enough going into the season? Probably not. However, if you go back to my posts in the spring, I also said I would "trust" Joe, Sherman and Turner if they trusted Martin. What a mistake on my part.

Did they have a choice? Who else on the roster could have played left tackle?

The fact is we offered Jake Long a contract, are you suggesting that was all Ireland and Joe Philbin vetoed that move?

It always amazes me that people think the HC has absolutely NO input on the personnel decisions. Its as if Ireland just makes all his decisions in a complete vacuum and Philbin walks into Davie one day and suddenly realizes a bunch of people are gone, or takes the day off during the draft to just read about the selections in the newspaper while taking his morning dump.

I don't recall Sparano getting any blame/credit for personnel decisions, it was all Parcells from what I remember. Funny how when Parcells disappears the head coach has final say on all personnel decisions all of a sudden.

If you're going to fire half the assistants, why not the entire staff.

Ross has no testicles.

You are telling me that coaching staff did not sign off on the fact that they could get by with Martin? Next. Of course they did. Don't pin this all on JI.

How do you explain the fact that we offered Jake Long a contract then?

Are you kidding me? Sparano had his fingerprints on a lot of personnel decisions as well. Pat White?

Fact is, a GM's job is to pick players that fits a coach's plans. OF COURSE the coach has input in the players drafted, cut, signed, etc.

A GM just doesn't build a team in a vacuum. They need to work with the coaches to get the players THE COACHES want.

I guess I do not know what I am debating with you at this point.

Do I think the FO could have done more to help the line? Yes. My focus of the offseason was to put RT in a spot to improve in his 2nd year. They made efforts to help his weaponry, but not enough up front. So, that is why I would have taken a strong run at Albert etc.

However, the coaching staff has a ton of responsibility of how the line played. Why the stretch plays? Why not more screens? Moving the pocket? Sticking with the run more?

I am not excusing JI and the FO for how the line looked, but I place as much blame on the coaching staff for their plan of how the line should look and the positions they put them in come the season.

How in the hell can you say our skill positions are good? Our WR corps is passable, we have one decent TE in clay and a backup rb in Miller. The talent on this team is spotty at best. Our GM left glaring holes at OL and RB and pinned the hopes of the season on acorns and past underperforming draft picks

So I guess Joe needs All-Pros to make it work. Terrible coaching staff. Never should got the "keys to the kingdom".

You seem to be suggesting that Joe Philbin was fine with Martin at LT, I'm suggesting he wanted an upgrade due to THE FACT that we made numerous attempts to indeed get an upgrade at LT in the offseason. Moreover, what makes you think Philbin has the control to order Ireland to sign anybody? Philbin couldn't even get rid of a mediocre guard in Richie Incognito after he sexually abused a woman.

It seems pretty clear to me that Philbin asked for upgrades at every position on the line except center and all he got was downgrades.

On top of all that Martin went AWOL during training camp, how the **** do we not at least bring in a veteran as competition at that point?

AND we cleared a roster spot during the bye-week which I'm going to make an educated guess was for McKinnie, how did that get delayed until after the Buffalo game?

We had $22 million dollars sitting in the bank and decided to roll with total garbage at o-line, thats the reason we finished 8-8. IMHO anyway. When you have that kind of incompetency from your GM its impossible to make judgements at QB or at Head Coach.

We will go around in circles on this. Here is the bottom line: you blame Ireland more for the mess than I do. I blame Joe more for the mess than you do. All is good.

How can you defend the talent that Ireland expects Joe to score points with? All average or below.

You do not think Joe had nothing to do with jettisoning the outspoken, but productive Dansby? Burnett was an "Ireland Guy"...you think Ireland canned him too?

I have no doubt that all of the players mentioned were on Philbin's ****list, but Ireland didn't find viable replacements for any of them. And those positions were largely ignored in the draft as well. I think Philbin did more with less this year and deserves some credit. With a decent playcaller, he could have done even more.
