Mando on the Struggling Run Defense

I think some folks get fooled b/c of the #s thinking Ryan has improved much more than he actually has. he HAS improved w/o a doubt and looks like he can be a good QB in the coming years but he's not there yet. if he was you'd be resting players this week or playing to win a division.

I think that's more on the o-line than Tannehill. Its tough to improve leaps and bounds when you're on your ass 58 times. Given the circumstances, he's done a very good job this year. He has work to do for sure, but the arrow is pointing up right now.

While we have regressed in run defense from 9th to 19th in yards per attempt from last year, we never beat the patriots with Burnett and dansby.
You can also see the effect of losing Ellerbe when you look at the ravens-patriot game last week.

Wait until next year before you judge the defensive personnel. When the offense, most notably Tannehill and the receivers, have enough experience in this system and can run it effectively and efficiently, the team will be in better position to get out to big leads via the passing game and make other teams have to come from behind with the pass, which is when these defensive personnel, who are better suited to defend the pass than the run, will be in position to be much more effective as intended.

I'm going to have to agree with Shou on this one. The fact that our D has kept us in games, and even won us a couple is very encouraging. They are on the field so much and being asked to be superhuman and do more than they should. Take away half our sacks, and that resulting effect would be offensive production which in turn means our D is resting and not having to carry us.

some on the OL, some on him.

I swear I have heard Dansby's name so many times year on ESPN doing something positive that it makes me sick!

He is having a pro bowl year.

In 3 years with Miami he had 6 sacks - This year alone with the Cards he has 6.5
In 3 years with Miami he had 19 passes defended - This year he has 18
In 3 years with Miami he had 1 INT - Guess what? He has 4 this year alone.
He also has the highest number of tackles of all his career this year.

He is a great player that we just never used properly. He has always excelled in Arizona, which is why we paid him so much to come play with us.

It's amazing to see that Dansby has more sacks than Ellerbe and Wheeler combined 6.5-1.5

Dansby has more forced fumbles than Ellerbe and Wheeler combined 1-0
Dansby has more interceptions than Ellerbe and Wheeler combined 4-2
Dansby has more tds than Ellerbe and Wheeler combined 2-0
Dansby has more passes defended than Ellerbe and Wheeler combined 22-12

Hell has frozen over!! I actually agree with Shouright on this post.

It's some on the coaching as Mando pointed out. It's too much of a coincidence when a player is pretty good before they joined the team , come here and stinks, leaves and be good again.

That **** is downright infuriating.

Don't forget who is coaching that Defense, our own Todd Bowles, who I thought did a good job here as interim HC and DC

PFF attributed only 14 of the 58 sacks are on Tannehill. The remaining 44 are attributed to the protection. Thats 24% of Tannehill and 76% on the protection
some on the OL, some on him.

Ive been questioning scheme for a while now. I just don't understand what Coyle is trying to do, it seems manic at times.

We are not gap sound at all which creates too many holes as it is, but upfront is where I think are the brunt of the problems and I don't know if its scheme/technique or personnel - just quite haven't figured it out yet, but with that challenge, it puts the LB's in conflict and I think it ends up asking them to do too much and as has been commented on by some of the players - Ellerbe I think, not everyone is on the same page - which can be attributed to a lack of understanding on scheme/strategy.

If Ireland/Philbin do stay, out of the 2 Coordinators, I do think we need to switch up on D. Fix the OL and give Sherman another year. But we have personnel on Defense for a 30 front - so if he's not too expensive, I'd like to have a look at Kirby Smart out of Bama as he's a smart guy, great with adjustments and has a lot of experience with spread/zone read offenses.

And I'd move Wheeler to outside as a back up to Jordan/Vernon and trade Wake to a top tier/SB contender 40 front team for a low 1st or high 2nd. Put Misi inside with Ellerbe and pick up Bullough/Skov in the 3rd to compete/back up for the inside.

The reason you guys have a shot at postseason is b/c of your D. I get being upset at the run D but you shouldn't be bashing the D overall. w/o their play you'd be in last place right now.

Once our O-line is fixed enough where our QB is not running for his life or throwing earlier then he wants, Miami's Offense will equal the defense.

The defense has been better then people think (Even though not as good against the run, as years past), but their major problem lately is how they play in the 2nd half, and more accurately 4th quarter.

The Jets only chance is trying to run, and control the clock, but that also allows Miami to score faster through the air, and far more times making it tough for the Jets to continue to run.
