Forgot the Colts, Bengals (4-11-1 to 10-6), Saints (funny what kind of impact an HC can have, right?), and Panthers. Everyone knows it takes at least 7 years to get into the playoffs. Building a team capable of WINNING in the playoffs takes an additional 4 years. Just need patience.

I tried to avoid silly nuance. You know how the naysayers love to throw things against the wall. For example:

Colts - "They drafted Luck. What do you expect?"
Bengals - "They just play in a weak division."
Saints - "They had a lot of injuries last season."
Panthers - "Cam Newton is one of those mobile QBs. It's a fad."

You know how it is.

And the Panthers owner was ready to fire Ron Rivera during year 2 of being a head coach but decided to wait until he hired a new GM and the new guy said he wanted to try to work with Rivera and with a new OC they got the 2 seed.

Not saying that will happen with us by any means, but sometimes patients is a virtue with a head coach.

You missed the point. It happens OFTEN. And I wasn't referring to the Chargers (though they didn't get lucky, they won the game they needed to while we **** the bed to two godawful teams). The Eagles division is no worse than ours, so get out of here with that nonsense. A VERY depleted NE team and two godawful teams with godawful QBs in Buffalo and the Jets? Please.

I was referring to damn near every other team in there. Certainly you know enough about the NFL that I don't have to spell out how many of those teams turned it around very quickly, do I? Now, I hardly think Philbin is the biggest problem, however, his unwillingness to move on from his **** coordinators is going to be his downfall. Unfortunately, we'll still be stuck with an owner without balls.

The Seahawks? Carroll went 7-9 his first 2 seasons and hit on a young QB with the best passer rating his first 2 seasons than any other QB in the history of the NFL.

Again, HC isn't the biggest problem. The biggest problem is the owner, which is becoming quite apparent. The next is the truly godawful GM, followed by the **** coordinators. HC comes into play when he won't let go of said **** coordinators.
 
Maybe a controversial view but Ross has a bigger picture to consider as well as the fans disappointment at the terrible final two games of the season. He is building his rep as an owner. If he fires Joe Philben after only two seasons when most of NFL thought he did a decent job under difficult circumstances, what does that say to his chances of hiring a really high end HC replacement? Stable franchises are successful franchises - just look at the Browns, Cowboys, Raiders compared to the Patriots or Colts. With a sophomore QB and a two-player scandal we would be in the playoffs if we'd won one more game over the season. As long as the Wells investigation doesn't implicate Philben I say he is entitled to one more year to show he is the right man. And if the deal is he has control over coaches then that should be respected. For what is worth I'd keep Ireland to. Give the Philben/Ireland team one year and if it fails then clean house. In English soccer Alex Ferguson was one game away from being fired at Manchester United but, he won that game and went on to become arguable the greatest soccer manager of all time. Believe me I was gutted at how awful our offense was in the final two games but, sometimes there is a bigger picture.

Chargers did get lucky, the NFL acknowledged as much when they said the refs had missed MULTIPLE calls that game.

I'm sorry, I've heard too many smart people that are in the know say that consistency is key in the NFL for you to make me believe we should be firing coaches every two years till were in the playoffs.

Also, please stop taking kernels of garbage "reporting" from the same beat writers you people denounce through the season! I'll believe Philbin won't fire Sherman, which was a request from Ross, when I hear it from a good source. Until then keep that TMZ bull**** out of your argument.
 
This should solve the problem much like when you got rid of Henning or when we got rid of Schottenheimer.
