I was watching some highlight videos of Matt's career at Iowa and let me tell you, the guy is POWERFUL, and SCARY. I feel bad for any linemen that goes up against him. They are comparing him to the likes of Dick Butkus (hard hitting), Ray Lewis (energetic and crazy in games), Warren Sapp (in your face personality), and he has a mentality of take no prisoners. On the field Roth says he says he treats the other player as an enemy, and after the game he'll befriend him, but on the field, its all about War. Personally I think he was one of the biggest steals in the draft. I love Jason Taylor, but Matt is gonna be better, because hes stronger, and can withstand bigger linemen better, and hes just as fast. We have got huge potential on this team, after this last DRAFT I personally think it was the best Draft we ever had since drafting Marino because this draft solidifies hopefully 4 super stars, Ronnie Brown, Channing Crowder, Matt Roth, and Anthony Alabi. Not taking anything away from out draft before of JT, Zach, Chambers, and Surtain, but personally i think we had the best overall draft in the league. We concentrated on key points and are ready for the future, can't wait for this season. What do you guys think?

anthony alabi is not a superstar... travis daniels is a reason to be optimistic.

whoa there slow ur roll...don't forget what JT has done for us...i dont think alot of folks here will be happy you said that about our # 1 player on our entire team.

I believe Roth will be good -but let's not jump the gun here. He has yet to play a down in the NFL, so he has proven nothing. Saying he will be better than Taylor is wishful thinking. We can all hope he is better. Just as fast as Taylor? I don't think so.
I'll be happy if he is 85% of Jason Taylor.

Did you see Alex Van Pelt in college? He broke most of Dan Marino's records. He's gonna be a beast in the NFL and will break Mannings records.

Oh wait....

:yeahthat:

Let's not call anyone better than Jason Taylor who has not played a down in the NFL, ok?

A QB postion is way different then a DE postion.

Exactly, Alabi may or may not work out but Daniels may have been a real find and a future starter.

there's no way you could say hes better than jt. but you have to admit when you see any footage of him he's definetly got the motor and the desire to hurt people!!

Personally, rather than compare the two, I'm just happy they will both be lining up together on our defense.

I do agree with the thread starter that Roth will be special though.

Roth has a great motor, and is intense. His strength was dominating in college, but you can't believe he isn't a bit of a project at the NFL level.

If he was the most NFL ready DE why were there 5 taken before him?

Bottom line, his pass rushing skills won't be enough against NFL OL the way they are now. he has one move, and it worked because he overpowered college lineman. The bullrush isn't that effective in the NFL, especially every down. He also has had difficulty readng and reacting to the play, and overpersues on run plays.

If he can diversify his passing rush, and improve his on field play recognition he will be a good DE, but I don't think that he has the ability to ever be another Jason Taylor.

who do you count as the 5 DEs taken before him... because I class Ware, Merriman and Pollack as LBs.

Swoosh.Missed the point completely.

What players do in college doesn't mean they can do it in the pro level. Matt Roth has potential but that's all it is for now. He looked good in college. He isn't going to be facing college players in the NFL.

Merriman and Ware are hybrids.

Roth could end up a LB too.

Draft position isn't really important though, fact remains Roth has a long way before he's in Jason Taylors category, or even a starter. I doubt he'll be more than a passing down rusher until he improves the mental aspect of his game.
