Matt Roth A Unstoppable Force

Roth has a great motor, and is intense. His strength was dominating in college, but you can't believe he isn't a bit of a project at the NFL level.

If he was the most NFL ready DE why were there 5 taken before him?

Bottom line, his pass rushing skills won't be enough against NFL OL the way they are now. he has one move, and it worked because he overpowered college lineman. The bullrush isn't that effective in the NFL, especially every down. He also has had difficulty readng and reacting to the play, and overpersues on run plays.

If he can diversify his passing rush, and improve his on field play recognition he will be a good DE, but I don't think that he has the ability to ever be another Jason Taylor.

He's no project, your analysis of him can basically be said of nearly every player that dominates in college. The reason 5 DE's were taken before him is because it was a very deep draft for the position. Being drafted 46th overall is no slight.

With his Physical skills, heart and incredible motor there is no way he will not succeed short of injury.

Success...Most likely. next Jason Taylor.....highly doubtful.

Take a look at these pre draft analysises of another high motor DE taken in the second round:

http://www.nfl.com/draft/profiles/kelsay_chris

Kelsay played on a worse defense, and many of the things said about him are identical to that said about Roth. They are about the same size, stregth and speed.

Now don't get me wrong, Kelsay is going to be a fine player, he started showing alot halfway through his 2nd season (took out Pennington) but kelsay, just like Roth are going to take time.

You think you may be a little biased, based on your avatar?

He has a very nice first step he isnt just a "power" player a lot of his rushes where effective because he got the linemen off-balance before he ever made contact he could be a pretty good situational pass-rusher for us this year...I agree he needs to ad more moves to his game but so does nearly every DL that gets drafted. No he will never be another Taylor he isnt the athlete JT is but he could easily become another Trace Armstrong and Id be very pleased with that.

I was watching some highlight videos of Matt's career at Iowa and let me tell you, the guy is POWERFUL, and SCARY. I feel bad for any linemen that goes up against him. They are comparing him to the likes of Dick Butkus (hard hitting), Ray Lewis (energetic and crazy in games), Warren Sapp (in your face personality), and he has a mentality of take no prisoners. On the field Roth says he says he treats the other player as an enemy, and after the game he'll befriend him, but on the field, its all about War. Personally I think he was one of the biggest steals in the draft. I love Jason Taylor, but Matt is gonna be better, because hes stronger, and can withstand bigger linemen better, and hes just as fast. We have got huge potential on this team, after this last DRAFT I personally think it was the best Draft we ever had since drafting Marino because this draft solidifies hopefully 4 super stars, Ronnie Brown, Channing Crowder, Matt Roth, and Anthony Alabi. Not taking anything away from out draft before of JT, Zach, Chambers, and Surtain, but personally i think we had the best overall draft in the league. We concentrated on key points and are ready for the future, can't wait for this season. What do you guys think?

He will be good, maybe a few great years (Pro Bowl), but definitely not better than JT. Disagree there.

Correct...I never said the guy will be a bust. I just don't think its fair for the OG poster to start proclaiming him an "unstoppable force" thats a little over the edge...especially before the man has put a lick on anyone.

Swoosh.Missed the point completely.

What players do in college doesn't mean they can do it in the pro level. Matt Roth has potential but that's all it is for now. He looked good in college. He isn't going to be facing college players in the NFL.

I agree. Im as excited about Matt Roth as anyone else. But lets curb our enthusiasm just a tad and realize he has not played a down in the NFL yet. He will be facing bigger lineman and bigger everything. I love the kid's motor and relentless style, but lets wait a while before we start making comparisons to current pro bowlers and past hall of famers.

I agree the OP was way over the top.

Biased? No more than anybody else. I just happen to think he will be an excellent pro, I have no affiliation with Iowa or Roth in any way.

As far as Kelsay, he has absolutely nothing to do with how good Roth will be or how fast. Personally I think Roth will be much better....just my opinion.

I can predict his 1st season already....

He'll make some big plays, get to the QB, lay some big hits, maybe even stuff an RB or 2...but he won't be on the field as much as many of you think. Especially because of all the FA vets you've brought in.

He'll also look out of place at times, chasing down Qb's on PA, while the RB runs right by, or over pursuing the QB and getting burnt on a screen. You'll probaly see a few late hits, or roughing the passers...its in Roths nature (he's kinda a meathead)

I've seen him play a bunch, i'm a diehard buckeye, so I watch alot of big ten.

Based on what? They are nearly identical in every way, size, speed, strength, agilty... Even the stats are very similar, I believe Roth had more sacks, Kelsay more tackles.

At this point the only logical reason you can give Roth the nod is because he's a fin, which I understand. I expect big things from kelsay this season, as he ended strongly last year.

At least next year Kelsay will outperform Roth, he's the starter.

I think you've displayed your bias, not only are you a Bills fan who see's the writing on the wall of another era of Miami dominating Buffalo looming, but you called Roth a "meathead".

Right....

I can't have a conversation here without some joker telling me Losman Sucks, or how scared I am....

Roth should be a good player, but he is most definatly a meathead. The guy is a freakin caveman...

Kelsay is a meathead, TKO, any of those crazy, football junkies are.

Anyone with a flame tattoo is a meathead.

= Meathead. Sorry.

100% agreed. Ive made the same point in several other Matt Roth threads. Most Rooks need some time to adjust to going against bigger stronger players than they faced in college....

That 1st season prediction isn't worth a handful of beans.
It does not matter how much you watch...if the Bills got him we wouldn't hear a word of this from you. Oh, it would be the opposite totally if a Fin Fan bashed him and all of a sudden your "diehard buckeye" credentials would certify you saw a beast out there with no equals.

Get over yourself
:rolleyes2
