McKinnie said he felt more comfortable playing alongside Incognito on the left side of the line because of how little time he had to learn the Dolphins’ scheme, but added he felt better closer to the end of the season. McKinnie is set to become a free agent, but he’d like to return for a full season in Miami in 2014.

“Hopefully I return back with the Dolphins,” McKinnie said, via the team’s website. “You know you have four out of the five [offensive lineman] whose contracts are up. I’ve been in the healing process and everything and I’m feeling better, working out and stuff like that. We have a new general manager so that’s good, and we’ll just see how things go. I plan on playing for a couple more years and it would be great to just finish my career there where I already have a home.”

More from the Finsiders

“It was a good experience. It was something where I kind of wish I was there from the beginning so I wasn’t cramming for a test because I had to learn the terminology and everything,” said McKinnie.

It was an unusual situation for McKinnie with the lack of consistency next to him, and his already short offseason schedule that he’d been running on since winning the Super Bowl XLVII with the Ravens. But he gutted it out, bringing stability to a position that was in flux for the Dolphins the entire season.

“If I had more time, I wouldn’t have had to worry about the person next to me, I could’ve focused more, and the communication would have been better,” said McKinnie. “Towards the end I got a little better, but I got drained too. I didn’t have a bye week, and I came off a short offseason and then went straight back in. I needed the time to hit the refresh button, but I thugged it out.”

Now with his steady level of production even at age 34, McKinnie could become a key part of the 2014 Miami Dolphins, and if the Dolphins want him back, he hopes to be back with the team next year. He says that he would love to finish his career in the place where he started in college as a graduate at the University of Miami.

“And at the beginning I felt real comfortable because I had Richie (Incognito) because he knew it because he’s been there and he was a veteran. When he left, I knew I had to depend on myself. There was a rotation, I played with five guards next to me, so that’s kind of hard for someone to come into, but I just had to make it happen.”

I think regardless of whether he is starting we should keep him on the roster for depth.

I think Miami should keep him so long as it's financially feasible. He not the force he once was but he's an extra coach on the field. Just for his recognition skills, he should be kept.

He brings a lot of championship experience and leadership. His play fell off towards the end of the year but I would like to see him get a fresh start at a new season with us. Hopefully we can get him to re-sign him at a hometown discount.

McKinney playing at 80% is still better then Martin playing at 100%.
Re - sign him on the cheap and still draft/FA sign 2 OT's

No thanks unless something can be done about the run blocking. He was terrible at the end of the season. IMO, he is done, especially after watching the video posted a while back about the fundamentals of the zone blocking scheme. McKinnie cannot block the back side of running plays like the system calls for. You have to get down and cut people and take them to the ground. McKinnie finished every running play standing up, hands on hips, blocking nobody at the end of last season.

If you can't get better he's no an awful back-up plan.

I thought he played well some games, and was awful in others. I would expect with a full off-season he should come up with more consistent play.

No thanks. Re-signing this man will not get us anywhere. He just isn't any good anymore. It baffles me why some people want this guy re-signed. I guess they are content with horrific offensive line play.

Not as a starter, but decent depth with great experience to mentor..

No brainer at the right price.

A. Good depth, experience and knowledge.
B. An upgrade is needed badly, but not guaranteed. May need him to stop gap one more year.
C. While he's long in the tooth and faded at the end, he certainly had a calming and guiding influence on that squad.

okay, then how many olinemen do you have to sign this off season? 4?

Its clear that people who are clamoring for him not to be resigned simply do not understand the issues we have on the OL. He should be resigned at least for depth purposes as he is better than ANY of the depth players we have.

Also, and is a fact that is lost by the haters and stated in his quote, he came here with no understanding of the offense or language, he had no offseason to prepare due to injury, and had no bye week. So the guy is likely the most tired and overworked person on the team. So that must be taken into consideration.

I'm for upgrading the o-line. Keep Pouncy if he can behave himself for 5 minutes but giving up the franchise record for sacks doesn't inspire me to keep anybody.
