I'd let him walk and put the money towards getting a better LT who's around for the long term. Big Mac did quite well in some games and definitely helped the team when we lost 2 starters, but we need better talent longer term.
I don't think it was starting to gel so much as getting rid of two guys who were so coked up they probably couldn't even hear the calls let alone perform them.I say bring him back, the line really started to gel once we get got McKinnie
I would hope the position could be served better by finding a longterm solution. He can still pass block, but his run blocking stinks out loud.
Signing him would buy us a little time to groom that LT for next year. Ideally, we draft or bring in back-up with potential to learn behind Mckinnie for the first 8-10 games. At that point, Mckinnie will probably start running down some and that would be great time to integrate the future LT to begin assuming that role. If we had all the other holes fixed in the O-line, I wouldn't be so inclined to bring Mckinnie back.

We more problems on the right side of the line than the left. I think finding a long term RT this year, keeping McKinnie on the left, then addressing the left in 2015 would be smarter - all depending on who is available of courseI would hope the position could be served better by finding a longterm solution. Hmm... ...just because I said Martin was "troubled" and that's why he quit the team doesn't mean I condone what he did, especially the lifestyle he found himself in. And there's no way I'd want someone like that on my team (mediocre performance aside).Trashing your 'victim' now huh? What a joke.
This is absolute craziness. Pay a aging declining LT for 8-10 games? And if his inability to matter in the run game shows in week 1? Or his inability to handle the pass rush from BUF early on? You know, his weaknesses bearing fruit during the first 4 games of the season. You upgrade, you don't spin your wheels in the mud and hope for a different result.
I don't disagree with your concerns with McKinnie. However, we would either have to spend and overpay for a LT in free agency or we draft a LT. Unfortunately, our head coach doesn't like to play rookies so who are we going to field from day one? What if our draft pick doesn't pick it up quickly or gets injured? We need more than one body at LT and I think McKinnie is serviceable for part of the season. With your last concern, I would bring McKinnie back with reasonable 1 year cap friendly deal. If not, I agree he is not worth it. I guess he is the lesser evil for now.

Perhaps it's difficult for people like you to understand, but I don't view life or people as black and white - as in, it's all good or it's all bad. I understand how Martin got himself into a mess and how he crapped on himself and everyone else trying to get out of it. And I'll defend him from people who think he or his family are publicity-hungry money-grubbers, because I think it's incorrect and defamatory. But there's no way I can approve what he did - the drugs, the parties, the girls, the resultant poor performance, and not reaching out for help until way too late and having to quit on his team. And frankly (and I've said this before) he is likely out of this league and i think that's completely justified given his actions.
But I guess my nuanced opinion is just a little too complicated for you??

You bring in a FA LT or draft one. Either way, McKinnie is a continued liability in the AFC East. His game while better than the previous pieces in place, is not the answer. Upgrade and do it right.
