merged 9x: Davey released/The real deal on Davey

And it won't hurt to pick him up. He has a cannon for an arm and is pretty mobile but he's not a Belichick QB.

I agree, bro. We don't have anything right now that resembles a franchise QB. I'm not saying one would not develop eventually, but there's no one in camp that I have the warm and fuzzies for.

What follows is my opinion:

Frerotte: Has shown flashes of brilliance followed by flashbacks of Fiedler, only less prone to INT and less mobile. He has the 'smarts' and has great vision and presence. His age and his propensity of overthrowing receivers relegates him to the role of Vet. Mentor.

Feeley: Man, I hoped and prayed that he would work out but he can't seem to shake the mental mistakes. He has the arm strength and is tough as nails but locking in on a receiver is the biggest reason why he is so easy to pick off. He also lacks the field vision that is absolutely necessary to succeed.

Sage: Great practice and preseason player but has yet to show anyone that he can start (not even Wanny who was relatively easy to snow. see Fiedler)

Brock: I liked the kid coming out of high school but it never translated at Miami. He won games but scared the crap out me in the process. Probably one of the smartest young QBs in the NFL but his missing something that I can't quite put my finger on.

Belichick isnt very fond of a QB that tries to improvise with his feet too much, he wants them to stay in the pocket if at all possible. I think Davey liked to move around too much for him, plus, he had his project in Cassel. Bill was not very happy in the first game that Matt played in. He was scrambling all around, and thats not a quality that BB has high on his list.

Davey is mobile, which behind a line like ours is a very good thing. He has a big arm, bigger than anybody on this team currently, yes even more than AJ. People constantly say we have all backups on this team, what difference would he make? He may not start, but in no way does it hurt to claim him, and see what he's got.

He's the same age as Sage, and honestly brings more to the table physically. He's big, he's tough, he's a chore to tackle.

Spot on.. There's an opening or two on the bandwagon.

Good post..

Does that make sense to anyone?

If he can't play for last year's champions then he sure as hell can't play for one of last year's worst?

?

This is so simple minded and it goes for anyone else in this thread who thinks the same way.

Great post. We really risk nothing. Who better than a Dante style QB to run this offense?
:)

I saw Davey in NFLE a couple of years ago. He has a gun for an arm. He probably got cut because of salary cap issues. Cassel (sp?) was much cheaper than him. He would be a better developmental qb than sage or brock.

They say that Cassel is Brady II. I wouldnt put alot of weight into he got cut by being beat out by Cassel. I would look at as he is a different type of QB and they want to go with the guy who is more like Brady. Thats all folks. The other guy is hometown favorite Flutie. Its really not hard to see why he actuall got cut and why would BB be worried about Saban getting him? Once again, people have ignored the obvious again. IMO Davey can be just as good a Sage and he knows the entire NE playbook. I think if people would actually think the way Saban and BB are thinking, you might actually get a clue.

I have wanted a big QB for a while now. (I think it was JT who was unable to bring Leftwich down in the preseason game) But I don't know about him talent-wise so I can't say anything else, even though I think Sage is having a good preseason.

which is exactly why I could see picking up Eric Alexander, the LB from LSU if he's cut by BB.

I have a question for you, why was BB trying to trade Davey so that Saban couldnt get him? I mean if this guy COULDN'T play for BB why is BB worried about his reunion with his old coach? Its because he can play, BB knows it. BB just got Cassels and they absolutely love this guy, he was a backup to two Heisman winners so nobody knew how good he really was hence him going in the 7th round in the draft. Davey can play in this league he will take some time but thats what the 3rd QB spot is for to develop.

I thought it was Matt Mauck he won a Co-National Championship with.
At LSU, where he played for current Miami Dolphins coach Nick Saban, Davey threw for a school-record 3,347 yards as a senior, leading LSU to its first outright SEC title since 1986

The Real Deal on Davey

I am sorry, this will be merged, but there are a lot of posts without stating what the deal is, just speculating why he was released.

Here's the deal.

Rohan was released more to do with political reasons then anything else. Doug Flutie is a veteran, and is Mr.Boston, I heard earlier that if Flutie was released, BB would be hated. Flutie also had a good offseason. Matt Cassell is a unique player, who fits more of the system the Patriots use. He has a 4 year contract, with 230,000 dolars this year. Rohan is on the LAST year of his deal, at 540,000-650,000 dollars this year. That's a 300,000 or more different, plus 3 years on the deal. Roahn just didnt fit right now. Bob Kraft flew all the way to Berlin to watch the Championship NFL Europe game, and all he did was talk about Rohan. Rohan was released today because it gives him time to latch on with a team before the season starts. He was also drafted by the Patriots because of Nick Saban. He was the Offensive player of the year in NFL Europe, and hey, he's a good prospect. Sage isn't going to be here next year, AJ might not even be here next year with a 3 million dollar roster bonus.

I am not doubting you one bit, because I have no inside info on the matter. But, Bill Belechick(?) worried about being hated because of Flutie? I don't see that.

Stopped reading here. He would never be hated for cutting Flutie. Why would a coach who has won 3 Superbowls in the last 4 years be hated?? :shakeno: And a coach that has done that would not be influenced by the fans.
