Merged: Brendon Ayanbadejo to Chicago for TE John Owens

Is this a good sign for eddie moore?

No, I don't think so, I think all the players # 2 and lower on the Depth chart are in trouble. Saban has always said his biggest concern was depth.

Good point, I agree with you. WHat linebackers (and how many) do you guys think we will end up keeping now?

why are we making stupid trades like that. we dont need another TE we need some good O-Linemen or a QB.

Yeah I guess Saban and Co. have no idea what they're doing. But you do, so maybe you should send in your resume and see what happens:sleep:

Sounds more another blocking TE, Considering how many mulitple TE set's we will run good move.

Any more on the conditional draft pick?

McMichael's performance against the Bucs showed me how important to this offensive line and running game it is to have a TE that can block.

To me, Brendan Ayanbadejo was not going to make this team no matter what, everyone knew it, and trading him for John Owens does not threaten Donald Lee's position, so much as if he shows us something incredible...he might even supplant Diamond, who really is a pedestrian blocker. My best guess is that Owens doesn't make the team. But, Ayanbadejo wasn't going to either, so at least we get to take a look at another TE as we try to find those guys that can catch and block (whereas Rader just catches a la Jed Weaver, and Holmes mostly blocks a la Hunter Goodwin).

That's a good analysis, essentially a free look-see at a player who probably impressed our coaching staff with a play or two from the Hall of Fame game. Diamond has been getting more playing time with the first team and more balls thrown his way than Lee. I would be surprised if he is in jeopardy, although I agree with your assessment of his blocking.

I just checked out a Bears message board. They aren'y exactly crushed to lose Owens. Here is one post:

"1. Who the heck would want one of our TEs?
2. Since we're so lousy at TE in the first place, why are we trading any of them away?"

Is their a list of other team's site like FinHeaven? With knowledgeble fans and not the usual garbage?

Hope, I'm not violating a law.

This might be one of those deals where if you cut the player you get (John Owens) before the season starts, you then get the conditional draft pick. So in other words, they take a look at John Owens in the game on thursday, and then decide if they want him or the pick.

I remember John Owens from Notre Dame. Frankly, I didn't even realize he was still in the NFL. The guy was highly touted out of high school and Pat Haden raved about him on some early Notre Dame telecasts. Then I took a look and he was a big TE who was a competent, but hardly outstanding blocker. Not close to Donald Lee in that regard. He also seemed slow. I remember they moved him around a lot, even to defense for a while, while that coach who is now a college football broadcaster for ESPN was struggling to save his job.

Maybe John Owens has improved. Can't say I've watched him in the NFL. But the guy I remember had less speed and not even close to the blocking ability of Donald Lee. Maybe his hands are better than Lee. Admittedly, I love Donald Lee's blocking intensity and skill, plus his ability to burst open down the seam, and would hate to see him go.

Bob Davie sort of screwed Owens up not sticking him at one spot and leaving him there to develop. While at ND he played on defense for a few years at DE IIRC, he was a pretty good athlete and any improvement he has had would have had to take place in the NFL as he really didn't get good college coaching under Davie. One thing I would disagree with is that Owens was actually a pretty decent blocker at ND with a lot of strength, don't know if he was better than Lee but he wasn't a bad blocking TE which is what the ND tight ends have been lately before the Fasano kid developed the last few years.

Obviously, the coaching staff has different ideas or possibly, everyone else is looking for OL....

Besides, this shows that the staff is not too enamored with our TE situation after Randy McMike...I don't know much about Owens, but we'll see soon....
I have really mixed feelings about Lee...when he catches the ball and when is isn't causing penalties, he's got a lot of the tools of a quality TE...but he just causes too many problems....

Isn't a TE kinda considered an O-Linemam? Maybe this guy can block real well, and still catch the ball

To my best guess, we will be keeping about six linebackers. Taylor and Bowens will be spending some time as a linebacker so they will essentially take some spots from the "true" linebackers.

Personally, right now, I see it as:

Thomas, Seau, Spragan, Crowder, Glenn, Pope, Moore, Jenkins, Taylor

I think Moore, Jenkins and Taylor are definately on the bubble. I think Glenn has played his way on and the top four are locks.

I'm sure they took a close look at him in that opening game. He was in on the short yardage play when the Bears scored there first TD. He didn't log any serious playing time until the 4th quarter.

The first thing you notice is that he has a serious low stance for someone of his size. He easily under-cut Carter on that goal line play...even though he was late on the snap count.

At about the 8 minute mark in the 4th quarter, he made a really nice block on Jason Glenn on a run play. He didn't show great hands...he also dropped a pass. He did well in pass blocking on both sides and snaps out of his stance very well.

Looks like a solid short yardage blocking TE and he held is own as a pass blocker.
