I'm sure they took a close look at him in that opening game. He was in on the short yardage play when the Bears scored there first TD. He didn't log any serious playing time until the 4th quarter.

The first thing you notice is that he has a serious low stance for someone of his size. He easily under-cut Carter on that goal line play...even though he was late on the snap count.

At about the 8 minute mark in the 4th quarter, he made a really nice block on Jason Glenn on a run play. He didn't show great hands...he also dropped a pass. He did well in pass blocking on both sides and snaps out of his stance very well.

Looks like a solid short yardage blocking TE and he held is own as a pass blocker.

Very good report. Sounds like you saved the game tape, always a useful idea. I like to maintain a sample of at least one or two games from major college teams, in particular, so I can go back and look at players as the draft approaches and not rely on scouting reports.

Just don't emphasize that part about dropping a pass. It's nicely buried here deep on page 3 of this thread. We don't want the Donald Lee wolves to snap at John Owens before he even arrives.

Bob Davie sort of screwed Owens up not sticking him at one spot and leaving him there to develop. While at ND he played on defense for a few years at DE IIRC, he was a pretty good athlete and any improvement he has had would have had to take place in the NFL as he really didn't get good college coaching under Davie. One thing I would disagree with is that Owens was actually a pretty decent blocker at ND with a lot of strength, don't know if he was better than Lee but he wasn't a bad blocking TE which is what the ND tight ends have been lately before the Fasano kid developed the last few years.

Thanks for that report. I thought I remembered Owens at DE but wasn't confident enough in that regard to mention it in my previous post. Let me emphasize I didn't want to denounce Owens' blocking. I have a very high opinion of Lee's blocking so anyone who threatens to take his spot better be exceptional in that regard. My mental images of Owens at ND are of a big raw kid who could block, but he probably didn't blow me away as much as his high school credentials indicated so I underrated him all the way around.

I wish we would have gotten a draft pick for him, I don't know much about Owens but I think we have enough suitable TE's right now. Especially with cuts coming tommorrow.
The deal also includes a conditional draft pick for Miami: probably a 7th rounder.

Someone thinks we got him just to add depth to the TE spot.

"Aug 29 The Chicago Bears have traded Owens and a conditional draft pick to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for linebacker Brandon Ayanbadejo. The tight end appeared in just two games with the Bears in 2004 after being claimed off waivers from Detroit. He has five catches for 49 yards in 15 career contests -- all with the Lions in 2002. "

We also waived guard, Frank Middleton.

Middleton's release seemingly helps the chances of reserve linemen Taylor Whitley, Alonzo Ephraim and Damion Cook toward making the 53-man roster.

With Middleton's release and the trade of linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo to Chicago for tight end John Owens, the Dolphins now have to clear 12 roster spaces by 4 p.m. Tuesday in the NFL's first round of mandatory preseason cuts. The Dolphins can clear two more spots by placing wide receiver Kendall Newson and cornerback Shirdonya Mitchell on injured reserve with knee injuries. "

Did someone say conditional draft pick? :D

Dolphins acquired TE John Owens and a conditional draft pick from the Bears for linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo. He's mostly a blocking tight end. (Mon. Aug 29, 2005)

But what is the Condition????

If Brandon makes the team we get a 7th and if he starts we pick up a 6th something like that most likely..

It's going to be tough to see Brendon Ayabadejo go...

Hopefully we could get a conditional 5th round pick out of the deal or this TE Owens turned out to be something other than just camp fodder.

I remember John Owens from Notre Dame. Frankly, I didn't even realize he was still in the NFL. The guy was highly touted out of high school and Pat Haden raved about him on some early Notre Dame telecasts. Then I took a look and he was a big TE who was a competent, but hardly outstanding blocker. Not close to Donald Lee in that regard. He also seemed slow. I remember they moved him around a lot, even to defense for a while, while that coach who is now a college football broadcaster for ESPN was struggling to save his job.

Maybe John Owens has improved. Can't say I've watched him in the NFL. But the guy I remember had less speed and not even close to the blocking ability of Donald Lee. Maybe his hands are better than Lee. Admittedly, I love Donald Lee's blocking intensity and skill, plus his ability to burst open down the seam, and would hate to see him go.

Lee isn't going to get cut. Miami is preparing themselves to run a lot of two tight end formations, and they probably want four tight ends that can functionally play the tight end position on the roster. Ed Perry is listed as a tight end, but he's exclusively a deep snapper. The Dolphins will likely be keeping only one fullback as well, so that opens up room to keep four tight ends.

Owens is in more of a battle with Jason Rader and Alex Holmes than he is with Donald Lee.

Ayanbadejo was a great ST's player for us. He will be missed for sure by alot of people. After reading some stuff about Jones, it seems like that we wanted him because he is a good blocker on short yards. IMO, this means that Lee will be gone. So our depth at TE should look something like this:

McMicheal
Diamond
Owens
Perry(LS)

EDIT: I don't know why i put Jones down.
