Merged: Brendon Ayanbadejo to Chicago for TE John Owens

Ayanbadejo was a great ST's player for us. He will be missed for sure by alot of people. After reading some stuff about Jones, it seems like that we wanted him because he is a good blocker on short yards. IMO, this means that Lee will be gone. So our depth at TE should look something like this:

McMicheal
Diamond
Jones
Perry(LS)
Lee is one of the best blocking TEs in the league, if we want a guy for blocking purposes then we keep him about..

really? where are you getting this from? one of the best in the league, huh?

I don't know really anything about Owens, so I can't really comment on whether it was good or not. However, I do like the part about the draft pick. :D Even if it is just a 7th rounder, I would be happy.

What does this do to Diamond though? Are we really going to keep 4 TEs? Perry and McMichael are locks, but are we going to carry both Diamond and Owens?

Lee isn't going to get cut. Miami is preparing themselves to run a lot of two tight end formations, and they probably want four tight ends that can functionally play the tight end position on the roster. Ed Perry is listed as a tight end, but he's exclusively a deep snapper. The Dolphins will likely be keeping only one fullback as well, so that opens up room to keep four tight ends.

Owens is in more of a battle with Jason Rader and Alex Holmes than he is with Donald Lee.

OK, I hope you're right. And I think you are. Maybe I've been overly pessimistic regarding Lee's chances with Diamond receiving so many more snaps with the first unit. Also perhaps I've been influenced by all the anti-Lee posts around here, posts that really baffle me when I watch Lee polish off one block after another. I know last year was a frustrating one and we needed scapegoats. Lee was natural fit given his struggles. One thing that hasn't been mentioned; Lee has all but eliminated the false starts so far. Those mental gaffes were never a tendency of his in college, or with us until last year. He's always dropped some balls.

It sounds bizarre but I think it's accurate. Lee is one heck of a blocker, very quick and decisive off the snap with excellent positioning and body control. He's especially effective when asked to block down. He finishes off blocks better than anyone on the team, IMO. McMichael is a very skilled blocker also, although I think he's dropped off a bit in that regard. Not as consistent as previously.

no way we keep 4 TE"S i think DIamond still makes the team we did this trade for the draft pick

The question I have is whether Linehans TE friendly system includes room for a blocking TE.I dont know but I dont think so.He wants players who can catch as well as block

Why do you think so many balls have been thrown Lee's way ? They want to know if he can catch and so far the results have been mixed.

Linehan has to decide between a fullback who can catch and block and a TE who can only block. The TEs are battling with the fullbacks for roster spots.

Anyway it appears Lee is ahead of Holmes and the other backup TEs so he may squeak through anyway.

I think you nailed it. They see the blocking excellence from Lee but that isn't exactly priority one in the new scheme. Lee is a very good natural athlete from an agility and strength standpoint, but he has remarkably mediocre hands. I doubt that will ever change. You can throw to him occasionally, but he'll never be the best option on a critical play. One of Saban's first legit roster dilemmas.

I wish we would have gotten a draft pick for him, I don't know much about Owens but I think we have enough suitable TE's right now. Especially with cuts coming tommorrow.

I agree. I'm not sure why this trade happened. Maybe this Owens guy will have some sort of a blocking role. Can he block? Maybe as part of the deal, the Bears just promised to never send us another coach like Wanny.

We did get a draft pick with this. Most likely a 7th. Although I'm hoping there is an escalator up till at least a 6th because Ayan was a pretty damn good ST's player.

why are we making stupid trades like that. we dont need another TE we need some good O-Linemen or a QB.

we did get a draft pick 4 him plus owens:tongue:

The Chicago Bears announced today Ayanbadejo was traded in a deal that will bring tight end John Owens to Miami. And Middleton likely has been cut.

In an update to this story, the Official Site states that the trade of Ayanbadejo for Owens also includes Miami recieving a conditional 2006 draft choice.

i agree with you on that ;)

I think that the point, and only the point, is the conditional draft pick based on performance. We all liked BA, but hopefully he thrives in CHI with some playing time and we get a pick. Even if its only a mid to late rounder.
