MERGED: Dolphins hire Lazor as new OC

i have some pull with some people there i am trying to get more info...i will just say this nothing has impressed me there coordinator wise since musgrave left...only qb they have had worth a damn was schaub...the position has been horrid forever...i know that for a fact

Well, you say they had terrible QBs when Lazor was at UVA.

Others are saying their offense moved up in ranking quite a bit while he was there.

Also, apparently garbage QBs like Seneca Wallace and some other bum had their best pro seasons when Lazor was their coach.

So this guy seems to be able to get the most out of bad QBs. That happens to be just what we need. Probably the reason he got the job.

you couldn't wait to throw that one out could ya...

To all the people saying he chose the Dolphins over Detroit: You do realize they're still Detroit, right? Lol

He also chose Miami over all the other openings, including staying in Philly. And in my opinion, he also chose the best young QB he had a chance at.

You have an excellent point.

now thats thinking outside the box.

Just remember people, Joe's fingerprints are all over this. He is in charge. Whatever he said to him had him change his mind.

Foles being 6'6" and having McCoy and a good Oline helped his case too

and this is correct. NOT SAYING lazor isnt going to be a good hire, but, foles is OBVIOUSLY one of those guys with other worldy talent that gets over looked and comes out of nowhere like tom brady or russell wilson.

if i am unhappy about anything is people are hanging this hire on foles developement. i think foles was going to be foles no matter what.

only people who sit in the meetings and are involved in day to day planning know what a guys contribution to the hole thing is. i dont hear anything bad about him and SOME other teams were interested. so the eagles staff must have given lazor good props.

and thats what i hope, that lazor is an up and comer, a TRUE offensive mind who was a big contributor in the game planning in philly.

i dont take ANY stock in the foles progress thing.

and i hope the fans are not expecting us to look like the philly offense. we wont. that was chip kellys offense, not lazors and he will be running philbins version of the WCO which is more like what you see now in green bay. sherman has WCO background but his hybrid of the WCO was just to hybrid. true WCO has more running, more crossing patterns and throwing to backs.

so, all in all, i am glad we have our guy in place. mcdoodoo said no to the aponte show and the next day lazor was a done deal. i am glad philbins pal went the other way. i dont like the good pals thing on coaching staffs. i dont know if this is a good hire or bad hire yet. there is NO book on lazor as a O/C. so we shall see in a year or two if this actually IS a good hire.

Are you serious? Tanne is a worse pick than Geno/Dee? According to your sig...

Never going to be able to take you seriously. That is complete and utter hyperbole. You lose any cred you may or may not have had.

He trollin'.

Sounds good. Tannehill badly needs a hands-on coordinator. His current and long term level simply isn't good enough and we'll rot away along with him unless it improves markedly. There are posters here who like to take pot shots at yards per attempt but 6.66 speaks for itself and makes them look deservedly foolish when they try to claim there was some type of obvious improvement from Tannehill this season. He'll fail unless that number bumps upward by at least a half yard and only a full yard higher makes us a legitimate contender. Mackenzie summarized well yesterday when he wrote that you'd like to see improvement but Tannehill was the same in 2013.

No kidding the posters with a Virginia background won't like the Lazor hire. The Cavalier offense was quite bland during those years. I checked a Virginia board and there was a thread led by a post, "Maybe he wasn't as bad as we thought." As a Canes fan who posts on several of their boards, we see comments from opposing fans during the week preceding the game all the time. Virginia fans invariably hated their coaching staff but then the team would thrive against the Canes. Miami lost as favorite to Virginia in all three of Lazor's seasons from 2010 to 2012. The 2010 game was marked by Jacory Harris getting knocked out by a vicious hit when the Canes were an 18 point road favorite. Virginia had a massive energy advantage in that game and took a three touchdown lead. Freshman Stephen Morris rallied the Canes to get within one score but Miami couldn't stop a third down play on Virginia's final possession and never got the ball back. In 2011 Virginia had its best team in recent years. Quite physical on defense and good enough to upset Florida State on the road. They also upset Miami as a 13 point underdog on Thursday night in Sun Life. Lazor's offense kept it close to the vest but did just enough. I remember a couple of well designed darts to the tight end on third down. In 2012 the game turned into a wild shoot out at Virginia but it always appeared likely that the Canes would prevail. Virginia pulled it out on their final play with a lob to the back of the end zone with the receiver doing a great job keeping his toes in bounds.

Those Miami games were always the highlight of Virginia's season. Otherwise they did next to nothing, outside 2011. Fans were surprised that Mike London would survive as coach, and naturally since the offense was very straight forward and unremarkable nobody thought a top notch pro caliber coach was directing it. It's wasn't uptempo or anything beyond straight ahead and power based.

I wanted a young coach, someone with potentially high upside. It's reassuring that Lazor had NFL background prior to Virginia and was pursued by Kelly despite the less than terrific results in Charlottesville. Lazor always ran the ball an acceptable amount at Virginia, in the 34-37 range. If he can translate that to the corresponding numbers in the NFL, which would be 25-28, we're improved already.

What if I argued it was the stadium's fault that Ryan Tannehill's YPA sucks? Would your head explode like the guy in SCANNERS?

i don't know how anyone could ever be a 18 point favorite with jacory harris the qb...

You should tell Indy that they need to draft a new QB. Andrew Luck's YPA was 0.05 higher than Tannehill's. THAT'S 1.8 INCHES PER ATTEMPT. And a greater % of his yards came after the catch.

Brady shouldn't have made it to year 4. Brees shouldn't have made it to year 3. Eli Manning should have been dumped. Dalton shouldn't have gotten to year 3. Roethlisberger is done. His YPA has dropped every year for the last 4 years. Matt Ryan? What a bum. His YPA was under 6.5 in his 2nd and 3rd years. I could go on and on.

The majority of QBs (even the elite) DO NOT start their careers at 7.5 - 8.0 YPA.

Some complaints from posters seem to be Lazor's lack of experience at calling plays at an NFL level. So maybe this is where Philbin comes in and advises him, where they can connect.
