MERGED:exactly the reason NOT to take a rb at #2/The Ronnie Contract

if i had to run behind our OL i wud want top dollar. Brown wont make it to mid season without getting banged up if our OL performs like last season. Im hoping our new OL will perform miracles and actually get a running game with some decent running lanes for Brown. We are going in with same players at the moment and im not as confident as i wud like to be. The only upside is they will have pre season and training camp to gel and time playing together as a unit will be a bonus.

No SOURCE, just a vivid imagination.....and some CRACK

Well, let's look at it this way; Even if Ronnie doesn't sign before the Pre-Season is over in week five we will have a viable RB in Ricky Williams, so really by that time we will have both of them running the rock. I think Ronnie and his agent won't be too much a pain in the ***, he seems like a modest guy to me that wouldn't put greed over the love of the game.

i hope that entire statment was being sarcastic....

but it also seems to be what alot of fin fans think...

strange huh... :poke:

what are we talking here? 3-6 mil a year with a 15 mil bonus?

"According to numerous sources, the Redskins have contacted San Francisco, the Dolphins, Cleveland and Chicago about the chance to move up to one of the top four spots to get Edwards."

"Minnesota, which has the No. 7 and 18 picks, also has contacted the Dolphins about trading up to get Edwards. However, a source indicated the Vikings will not give up both high picks to move up."

that'd be 2 teams with confirmations made on trade offers. saban said we received no trade down offers. hmmm, i think what he meant is that we received no trade down offers we liked. also, minny said they would not give up both first round picks. now, what do you think their offer was, then? just the #7 lol. NO. it was the #7 and the #49 as i said.

sabans board was 1.smith 2. ronnie and 3. Edwards....he got who he wanted at #2 and thats final. Why do you think the top 3 Rb went in the top 5, because this year's RB class is SPECIAL!!!! we got who we NEEDED, he will fill a NEED.

And I agree with that board. The original point of this thread was that you don't take a RB at #2. I disagree with the absolute nature of the original post. IMO there are exceptions (special players). My disagreement with you was that need is not an exception.

THECOORDINATOR....whats ur point??? We knew EVERYONE talked to EVERYONE, so what does this have to do with SABAN not wanting to trade??? He didnt get a good offer and thats all that matters. We took a RB that we desperately needed at #2 and we solidified our aging Defense with the rest of the picks. He did what was best for the team. Taking a CB at #7 is ridiculous....you say we had an 1800 yd back in ricky and look how far that got us....well we had the best corner tandem in the league for 4+ years and what did that do for us?? I dont think they've scored much TD's for us the way Ricky did......just look for another thread man, u aint going to win this discussion

i think the money part of this thread is by the by - of course whoever we drafted at #2 was going to get #2 money.

and i'm delighted to have rb ronnie brown on the team. he's gonna be great for us.

but i agree with the main thrust of the thread - he's simply not worth the value of a #2 pick. as the original poster says, with a good oline a decent rb can put up huge numbers.

i'd far rather we'd taken edwards, with smith having gone, especially since i've seen little to improve our passing game happen at all yet. the prospect of more over-reliance on a star runner starts to fills me with concern.

but the new team hasn't played a down yet so i'm keeping my mind open....

i disagree. Taking a quality RB is half of our Offense!!! No running game spells no balance. Lets face the facts we need someone special to run the ball behind our OL.

my point is that in my opinion running backs are not worth the huge contracts. i believe those are a better value at cb and wr, and qb IF IF IF you have a true franchise qb. if our line blocks good this year, you are gonna see morris and harris be just as productive as ronnie brown and compare their salaries. just look at how denver and kc plug anyone in back there and get yards. anyone want to bet right now maurice clarrett gains more yards this season than ronnie brown?

Not only will Ronnie start, he WILL be in camp on time. This is by ALL accounts a quality guy, on and off the field...

you pay the going rate me Jock mate.

Say we did take Edwards at #2, what will happen with our money???? We just resigned Chambers long term and we have NO running back. Let's just put all our Offensive money on 2 WR's and forget the offense. Ronnie makes the WR's better, not the other way around. Getting any WR does not open up the running game, we saw that last year. Having a good RB forces Defenses to not cheat and be aware of our backfield. Im glad we didnt take a WR even if RB was not "worth" it. I'd rather spend money on a RB, then ANOTHER WR.

By the way, Edwards is nothing better than Chambers. They are both the same, and Chambers might even have more talent. And you need the QB to play good in order for the WR's to play good....a RB will help the ENTIRE offense to play good.

in my opinion there are only two positions worth alot of money on offense, the QB and the RB, the WR are expandiable and in the right scheme any o-linemen could do well

You always over-pay for a Top 5 pick.

Nature of the beast. Atleast Ronnie Brown is the real deal, I was never that impressed by Smith and Rodgers.

That is not enough. A 7 and 49? According to the chart Minn 2 first rounders werent enough. Why would we trade down just to trade down? that is idiotic.

If you don't think we should have drafted an rb fine, but dont say things like "see.. we were offered trades..." when the trades were completely in the other teams favor. Maybe Saban meant that we had no serious offers of equal value. you even put in bold they werent giving what the #2 pick was worth. If Saban made that deal, he would look like someone you can easily take advantage of. You arguement is ridiculous. If Saban thinks ronnie is worth the pick, he is worth it in my opinion.
I am happy you have nothing to do with the franchise besides making ridiculous posts.
