Merged: Jason Cole: "Ricky will return.."/If Ricky comes back, he's here to stay?

Bravo Skape! Well said.

I absolutely look foward to his return and see it not as a question mark but as inevitible. I think his best value to the team is staying as a Phin; I just hope we arent stupid enough to chase him away. Boo him for his mistake; for running while scared but remember that we all make mistakes and that while he ran he also left everything on the field. He let us down as fans but hes human just as we are. Not 1 of us has handled every situation we faced correctly every time.

Some are just going to have to face that his best value to this team is as a Phin. If the team can accept him back and they can forgive him as a fan we have no choice. We are not the 1 who lost a year of our career trying to compensate for his loss. All we lost was 12 games and in the process got rid of a coach none of us wanted back anyhow. I thank RW for that because if RW was here we may have (gasp) won 9 games and gotten Wanny for another year instead of st nick.

Why are so many people upset at Ricky? Last season was all WANNy! Ricky would have been a 1500 yard back on a 5-11 team. People need to stop pouting about him coming back, it works out to our benefit either way.

If Ricky comes back, he WILL play for Miami at least one year. He has no trade value as is at the moment, but if he displays rededication and the same pro bowl skills, there will be alot of trade partners avalable the next season.

Now with that said, here are some reasons I believe that if he returns at all, he will stay with Miami for the rest of his career.

- Ricky has more value as a player for us, than anything we can get in return for him. Probably the most we could get for him is possibly a 2nd round pick, whereas, on the team, coupled with Ronnie Brown, he would be part of the most lethal backfield in the league. That is more valuable than a 2nd round pick imo.

-Ricky never liked being the focal point of the offense. This was one of many reasons he was pushed from the game. Wanny's wad ball wore him out. He came to Miami with the intentions that he was going to be just another player on a good team, I dont think he ever envisioned him being THE MAN on the team. All of that attention was what got him down in NO. Attention like that with a social disorder is just too much to handle. With the prospects of sharing a backfield with another great back, and a system that will use him as a complementary player rather than the focal point, he will feel more comfortable. He cant get that on any other team.

-He will be playing for a coach who wants him, who doesnt remember his transgressions, who accepts him and will care for his best interests. While Wanny wanted Ricky as well, he abused him, he used him up as a way to save his own hide (That Buffalo game with 30 plus carries comes to mind). He might be able to strike a similar relationship with Saban like he did with Ditka and his college coach.

-He wont have as much fanfare. Another thing that wore on Ricky was all the fan attention he received in So Fla. He became the savior of the city shortly after he arrived, and I dont believe he was prepared for that. With his actions, you could say he put a big damper on that here. He will never get that amount of fan attention again, although he might get alot of negative fanfare, that is until he starts putting up numbers.

-Most of the teamates he betrayed wont be around much longer, or will forgive. Saban is remaking the team in his image. Half of the old Defense is already out.. The OL is somewhat revamped since he last played, Fiedler is gone and the other members on O appear to be the forgiving types. If Ricky can make TRUE apologies to his teamates for leaving them hanging, he shouldnt have problems as far as the team is concerned.

-The money. We all know he needs to pay back Miami for the money they gave him. This would be his opportunity. This would also be his opportunity to make the slate clean. This would be his pennance. It always seemed, or at least he stated, money wasnt his driving force, if he would just accept a modest contract and work to payoff the rest, Miami would be the perfect fit for him.

The situation in Miami would actually be quite positive for Ricky and his needs. It would be equally beneficial for the team as well. A backfield of Ricky and Ronnie would quite frankly make ANY QB look good. It would cause matchup problems for every D coordinator in the league. Seeing as how Ronnie is such an unselfiish and teamfirst player, he would be the perfect compliment to Ricky.

If you can look past your own personal feelings, you might see how this scenario could be perfect for all parties, and I, for one am willing to forgive. I was upset at his retirement as everyone else, but mostly for the timing, not that he decided to retire. I understood why he did it having some knowledge of social and anxiety disorders. His later comments turned me off a bit, I saw a different side of him which was pretty lame one indeed.. The guy is immature, that is for sure, but sometimes, these kinds of people, specifically decent people deep down, which I believe Ricky is, need certain father/teacher figures to help them out of their funk.. I truly believe, after everything I have read, that Saban would be just the man to serve in that capacity for him.

Will Ricky run again? July shall make the answer clear once and for all.
Excellent Excellent Post Skape! You made some great points that I absolutely agree with 100%. Now here comes the big question you asked that I feel I should answer since you've taken the time to write that post. Will Ricky run again? I am going to say

This is a BOLD prediction, but I am saying Ricky will be a Dolphin once again even though it is way too far to be predicting this because so much can happen in so little time. What he did to us will never be completely forgotten, even years to come. But I think..... Well I don't want to go on and on writing paragraphs about Ricky, but Yes, I do think Ricky will run again.

One thing I find funny!!...

You people crying that you hope Ricky can return, play a season and do well enough to garner trade reciprication......will be the same ones next offseason saying "We Shouldn't Trade Ricky!! He came back and showed he still has it, we need to keep him!!"

..and don't say it won't happen, because you all know damn well if he comes back and shows a glimpse of what he had, and Brown plays average (even though he's a rook), you won't want him gone.

Maybe some will change their minds if Ricky does well, but not me. As I said in another thread, Ricky is a timebomb. It isnt a question of "if" he will blow up, but one of "when". I prefer that it be while in the employ of another team.

I would accept him back and agree with you. Yes there is always that threat with ricky, now that he left once, there is always the option of him doing it again. But look at the risk vs the reward. The risk is mitigated by the fact we have Brown as well as Gordon. If Ricky comes back and is redeicated we have 2 excellent backs and a very viable 3rd back in Gordon, if would leave again, we wont be left hanging without options. Based on this, teh reward outweighs the risk.

Cant trust him.
Cant afford him.
Wanny didnt work Ricky to death, Ricky worked Ricky to death.
Cant reasonably expect that he wont get another suspension.

If Ricky decides to come back this year there isnt much the Phins can do about it short of cutting him.
However, if he does return and prove that he can still run, anything we can get for him at the end of the season would be better than keeping him. Ricky is a timebomb. Let him explode (again) on some other team.

The thing is, if he gets another suspension, or decides to retire again, it wouldnt be the lethal blow that is was in 2004. You see, Saban has a backup plan. He isnt pinning all his hopes on Ricky Williams. Ricky Williams would just be the icing on the cake. If Ricky flakes out again, we have Ronnie. Ricky will NEVER have the impact he had on this team ever again.. that responsibility of carrying the team on his back will not be his, and I do not believe that is something he ever even wanted.

People say he cant be trusted, but he CAN be trusted on the field.. On the field, he was a beast. Relentless. People say he showed signs of not giving his all in 2003. I dont believe that. I think shying away from tacklers he tried earlier in the year wasnt cowardice, but rather a new type of running he was experimenting with like he stated at the time. He was trying to be more of the elusive type back, rather than the power runner he was known to be, somewhat to save his own body, but also because he felt he had some success with that in 2002 once he slimmed down.

Ricky on the field is a warrior.. Ricky off the field is a scared child.. Thats why he needs a strong mentor figure like Saban.

Anyway, I dont believe Ricky will play more than 4 years regardless.. My guess would be 3 years. but if he can give 3 more good years to the Dolphins, the chances are, one of those years will be a Championship year.

Ricky was great when he played and he decided to take some time off, that's his deal. Last season's nitemare was all WANNY and Speilman.

So if he blows up, we got Ronnie! Not that big of deal. The big deal is that because of Ricky, Waany is gone!

If Ricky comes back it will be as a back up and he would have to earn his way on the field. I would see him signing for vet min with his judgement being wiped away.

If his judgement being wiped away is part of the deal to get him to play, then the league could view it as "salary" and charge it to the Phins cap. Merman and I argued this point a bit earlier and I dont think there is a definative answer either way, but it could happen.

I hope Ricky comes back and I hope he comes back pissed at all the doubters. Remember all those stiff arms he delivered, now imagine that mad! Can't wait.

Can you imagine Ricky and Ronnie pounding the balll down the Bills throat and there is nada they can do about it. Payback for all those years with thurman and the playoffs.

Yeah thats it! Give two men who worked their butts off the finger, and give the one who turned his back on the organization a free pass for some time off!!!

Twisted Sister could not have said it worse.......... :shakeno:

If a good teams running back goes down early, and TRicky is back in shape, they will be more than willing to trade a 2nd for him, and thats plenty.
