MERGED: La Canfora: Gruden is Ross' main target

Tony Dungy's last 3 seasons in Tampa were 11-5, 10-6, and his last year was 9-7....people say the Bucs got progressively worse under Gruden...but fail to mention that they were a clear trend to below .500 under Dungy.

The Bucs didn't have a good enough offense to take this team to where they needed to be in before Gruden and after Gruden. Gruden didn't really have a good enough offense to get his team to the super bowl to begin with. That offense ranked 24 in the league and was still one of the worst offenses in the league. In 2002 the Bucs ranked 14th in passing touchdowns, 15th in passing yards, 27th in Rushing yards, and 31th rushing touchdowns. The offense ranked overall 24th in the league.

The 2001 year under Dungy they were pretty much as worse. They ranked 2nd in rushing touchdowns, 30th total rushing yards, 15 passing yards, 28 passing touchdowns. Overall they ranked at 26th overall offense. So this offensive Guru came into Tampa to improve the offense by a mere 2 spots.

You know what improved? The same defense that was already 6th best in the league to the best in the league. Holding quarterbacks to 47.6 or so Qb rating, 43 sacks, 31 interceptions, 4 touchdowns, allowed 18 touchdowns, 4000 total yards (best in the league that year), no one rushed against them over 100 yards, and were led by Kiffin and not Gruden.

If you want Gruden so bad then go for it. Don't come back to these forums crying about our team still sucking.

So Dungy had GM duties at Tampa and Indy? He built the Bucs and Colts right? We should hire Dungy since he s such a great talent evaluator. Without him the Colts would've been terrible all those years with Manning.

The coach is an integral part for getting the proper talent. Rich McCay is a stand up guy and is one of the best Gm's in the league then and today. The 2001 Colts defense ranked 29th in the league and when Dungy came they ranked 8th best in the league. Gruden took that defense from 26th to 24th in the league. The Colts didn't nearly gave anything compared to what Tampa did for Gruden.

Fisher never won a super bowl. He hasn't even had many good seasons.

Bringing Gruden would be a mistake. If we had a choice then we would hire a really good GM or pull him off from another team all the way to Miami. If I had my way I would hire Rich McCay from the Falcons at a moderate cost and let him decide where to take this franchise. The last guy on his list would be Gruden probably. Look at the current situation with Atlanta and you might see where he would take a franchise.

I know you would hire Rich McKay. But you'd be hiring the wrong person from Atlanta. Besides which, McKay would never leave a cushy job like he has in Atlanta. The person in Atlanta that has made the good personnel decisions is Thomas Dimitroff.

I agree that the best way to do things is to get the GM first. But what good young GM prospects are out there? The only one I can come up with is DeCosta, who turned down chances to interview other places as recently as a few months ago, because the ravens have stated that he's going to be their GM when Ozzie Newsome retires.

Makes perfect sense. Jon Gruden has just always seemed to me as a guy Stephen Ross would hire. Plus, I'm sure Gruden is tempted at the thought of being able to coach Andrew Luck. Honestly, Gruden made no secret of his intentions during the first Monday night game. He wants to coach here in Miami. Bring on the West Coast Offense baby!

this would be just peachy!!!!

2 reasons i am fine with this, ONE: he brings the west coast offense and knows how to use it. brandon marshall is the ULTIMATE wco wr. hartline is probaly the most under rated wr in the nfl, definately amongst fin fans. gruden will make him a pro bowl player. and he will not have a problem finding ways to get REGGIE BUSH the ball.

TWO: he will absolutley fight to the death for ANDREW LUCK. and i think he can go toe to toe with ireland if he is retained and ireland balks at taking a qb #1 over all or to trade up for him. it is IMPARATIVE that miami gets a bonafide franchise qb and luck is the real deal. we have plenty of talent, it just isnt being used correctly. we can use a pass rusher for sure, a o-lineman or two and a ball hawk db, but there is f/a for some of that. the finz need to do WHATEVER it takes, PAY ANY PRICE to land luck and get this team set at the most importanat position on the field. GRUDEN will grind this into the heads of the dolphins brass as he knows the importance of having that real deal qb. and gruden knows what to do with one!!

I don't want a guy with that attitude. Clearly his heart is more into money then coaching. Ross is too concerned with glitz. Might as well make Fergie the next head coach. Gruden will be a mistake.

bingo, take the money and run. miami wants a name, its gonna get one....for about 3 years. thank u. now back to your reg. sched ESPN Network.

and in 2003, after a full season in his system, the Bucs were a top 10 offense. Obviously, the defense was the star of the team, but Gruden brought in the starting RB, the #2 and #3 WR, and the TE...All of whom were huge in the playoff run...

I'd consider us very lucky to get either Cowher, Gruden or Fisher as our new Head Coach. The way I see it, we should have a new coach about 3 minutes after the regular season ends. That way, our new Head coach can put together the best coaching staff possible.

Hypothetically speaking but it is not impossible to offer a guy a lot more money than he is earning. If you want to settle for a sandwich vs a steak meal then you get what you get.

Top 10 in yardage, but with a high turnover rate at 29 overall, 3rd most pass attempts, third most passes intercepted in the league, 24th in rushing yards, 30th in rushing tds. They indeed produced the 10th most yardage in the league but with no running game, high passing attempts, 3rd most offensive turnovers in the league. There is a reason why they only won 7 games, and the reason wasn't that they were an awesome top 10 offense. They were one of the worst offenses that year and he was the offensive coordinator/coach for the Bucs. Any more Gruden misinformation that you want to provide other than what you have already?

You want to try to outbid Arthur Blank for a man who's job currently is to do little, and ask him to come here and do a lot. If he has half a brain he'll say no, regardless of what money we offer. If he doesn't, then we really need to be worried.
