MERGED: Schefter and Mort: Miami will be in mix for Manning

1. This has SMOKESCREEN written all over it.

2. This is an attempt to avoid any Brees-like recriminations. They will do due diligence and it will eventually come out that he cannot even FUNCTION, let alone play QB in the NFL. If Brees' shoulder didn't hold up, he is an NFL bust... but ALIVE. If Manning's neck blows out he could be a QUADRAPLEGIC at best.

3. Our QB's in 2012 will be (in no particular order) Flynn, Moore, and Tannehill. Not too many teams can top that.

I dont think it is a smokescreen at all. This has Ross all over it.

It has nothing to do with it being Ross' money. I'm looking at losing out on Flynn.

I'm not as focused on Flynn's few stats and games as I am with his comfort and relationship with Philbin.

Philbin needs Flynn to make his transition smoother. The man just lost his son. I realize everyone just talks football on this board, but as much as Philbin has going for him professionally, he is still in a dark place in his life right now.

The Phins can say all they want in pressers to make us feel great. But anyone with half a brain can look at this situation and realize that while Philbin is a great candidate, he will need some help transitioning his personal life. He will need all the help in the organization he can get to take some of the pressure off of him while he gets his house in order. In time, I believe we'll get a heck of a coach out of this pick. But right now, the organization needs to do everything possible to help him in his first NFL HC job and during this trying time in his life.

If handled right, he will prevail and be the guy we all want. But it's foolish to not want to make his new home have familiar faces and people he can rely on during this trying time.

Get Flynn. Let him build his staff with people he trusts. And bring a few players in, Finley and/or others, that can help make the Phin locker room his ALLY and not his ENEMY.

If we get Peyton, we lose out on our future. Why? To please a bunch of fanatics? It's not worth it to me.

There are more important things than winning in this difficult transition period for Philbin. The man needs understanding and support. In and out of the locker room.

Get Flynn. Anything else is stupid.
