It's a no win situation in the life of a Dolphins GM this day in age. Ireland and this whole Wake situation will not have an easy solution.
Wake is a premier pass rusher and those premier pass rushers make $7.5 million per season MINIMUM. Wake is 30 years old and not getting any younger.
So the length of a new deal is a concern. Do you give him 3 years? 4 years? 5 years? The longer the deal, the more likely Wake will be cut in the final years of his contract.
What does Wake's camp want? Do they want the big deal with a lot of guaranteed money?
Say we sign Wake to a 4 year deal worth $8 million a year on average, what if Wake's production falls of significantly this coming year?
Not only do we have to be careful with Wake's age, but he also plays a physically demanding position and injury is a concern.
Wake has played at such a high level the last two years and it is a shame he is getting paid peanuts, but remember all, he signed on the dotted line.
As long as Jake is not signed long term, I cannot imagine Wake getting a new deal. We have almost ZERO cap space right now and cannot afford to give Wake the deal he deserves.
Dansby, who was our prized Free Agent recently, has a bloated cap number and yet NO ONE complained when we signed him.
I could imagine this same scenario occurring if we give Wake a big deal and two years from now many will be crying the same old "why does so and so get paid so much"?
Wake cannot afford to sit out for very long, the $30,000 a day fines will catch up to him. Ireland is too stubborn to cave and I imagine Wake's camp will cave first.
I do hope Wake is able to remain a Dolphin for at least a few more seasons.
