MERGED4x: Virus alert/Trojans/Ads

Some great firefox add-ons beyond adblock+

Consider downloading "WOT" (web of trust) which advises you both when in google and then onsite just how trustworthy the site is which you're linking to. Personally if I see it coded red, I don't care how interesting or helpful the content, I stay away.

Hey Vaark,

I have been checking out WOT on one of my PCs since you mentioned it. It's a nice extension but I'm not to sure how accurate those site ratings are. Case in point, this site comes up with a rating of the highest level of green but I'm sure that several members would beg to differ.

The ratings are determined by users who visit the sites in question. WOT is still helpful. I'm gonna keep running it for a while before making a decision on whether or not to install it on all of my machines.

The other staff and I have the highest desire to keep the ads as discreet as possible and when the ad hosting company puts something out that we hear valid complaints about, we contact the owner about fixing it.

Recently when the reports of virus laden ads came up from numerous sources we investigated it as a staff (often signing in under regular names, or browsing while logged out) to see what the fuss was/is about. At the end of the day I personally couldn't get one popup or slide out ad to mess up my machine, but where there is smoke there is fire, so we requested that the offending ads be pulled down.

Keebali (the owner's company) pulled down one of the ad servers that had popups/unders and from what we've been able to gather it should be fixed.

Unfortunately as many here know, we cannot go ad-less and nor can any other site that has as much traffic as our site generates. I wish it were otherwise, but in the end I'd rather have finheaven with ads (even annoying ads) than no finheaven at all. that being said we'll continue to monitor the effect these ads have on the members who have to view them and if something inappropriate comes up on the ads we'll do what we can to get it changed ASAP.

If Ads are still giving people problems, please let us know what anti-virus you are using, which web browser an if at all possible, screenshot of what ads were running when you got the warning/virus. Thank you.

This website is being directed to aother site!

Hey who ever runs this site needs to be aware that this site has malware linked to it. Everytime for the past few days when I try to view a different page on this site it asks if it is ok to be direct to another site...

And my antivirus program removed a virus from the webtraffic it generated!

Suggesting I switch to Firefox is not a solution. Because I don't want to switch. Come up with a real solution please :)

Tip to my Dolphin brothers ....

Install these 2 Freeware Programs (they both defend in different ways) & Update them weekly (the free versions have to be updated manually).

I've had great success with them for years. Just google up the free dloads.
I'm a techie & they were recommended to use together on several tech sites.

SpywareBlaster
Spybot (Search and Destroy)
(If you don't have a virus program: use AVG free version .. one of the good ones)

I don't want to be preachy, but consider these facts & think!! ....
- Yes, I've seen alot of viruses, spyware, & crap on this site ... its inevitable where alot of people visit ... not necessarily the mods faults (like swine flu, you gonna blame Sears cause you caught it there!! lol)
- Remember, this is just a nuisance, what if they steal your personal info!!!!!
- If you're getting infected be thankful to finheaven they woke you up to a problem that's everywhere on the Web & you just learned you need to protect yourself ... you're NOT Protected!!
- There's alot of different good software (& more opinions) & all evolves over time getting better or worse. Good free stuff I find as good as pay. Never hurts to always learn & find new stuff, ask tech friends in the know ... i.e. I also use the mentioned AdBlock Plus for FireFox ... it appeared one day & I said HELLo YES!!, as FireFox wants to compete by having a good product.

Comment to the guy who said the virus pissed off his boss: What kind of a dumbaz co. is NOT protected by IT Dept.,that's a co. responsibility ... he should THANK you!!! The threats here are chicken-doody & there's bigger threats to co.s.

Made this a little long, but I'm a Silicon Valley dude who can go on for pages :chuckle:, who just wants to help my Dolphin Brothers!! Go Phins & wup some NuhUh-Leans Ain'ts:woot:

And for those of us who do not have enough free space to upload a virus program? The fact is, the site should be trusted. I dont need a virus program to go to google, or si.com, or msnbc.com.. so why would I download one just for here.. Seems to me its just an excuse for the admin's to not take care of the real problem which is getting rid of the viruses...

I just got one on my other lap top. The screen froze up, so I turned my computer off. When I rebooted my computer I got this screen that asked if I would like to start my computer in safe mode, restore the system from a previously saved spot (or something like that) or continue as normal. I did all the choices and my computer goes to the Windows XP Pro load screen, and than black screen of DEATH. I consulted my IT guy and he is taking a look at it. Sounds like a virus entered my dell support drivers (?). I am not a computer expert and dont know what that means. But it is what it is.

It seems like I have the most issues when I have multiple windows open. I just dont know what to do anymore. I love Finheaven. I am addicted but I cant be here if it is gunna screw up my computer.

dolpns13, you're 100% correct. It is out of control.

But reality is my post above yours ... if you don't protect yourSELF, you're NOT protected. Not taking sides, just helping my Dolphin Brothers.
Cheers & GO Phins!!

FYI ... I wrote a longer blurb in the thread below this one that's worth the read about malicious crapola ... The ads bad, but the spyware(?) is getting out of control! p4

Maybe you can get rid of some of the stuff that you are aren't using to clear up hard drive space? Just a thought. And, you're wrong. If you have a PC that is going to connect to the internet on a regular basis, having some type of security on that machine is a necessity. If you don't, you're just asking for trouble....

That is a very good point. Surfing the net these days requires one to take precautions.

Today it may be FH, tomorrow it could be something else.

alot of virus alerts when i come to this site! for the last two wks it has happened

Like Google, SI or MSNBC. No site is safe from potential contamination. Some may be better at preventing & recovering from infections but all sites are at risk. Shoot, even the government sites get hacked!

Screw it I can't take this anymore

Seriously Finheaven, what the hell is up with [all] these horrible [ads. I like to think I'm a patient and understanding individual, I really do. I know that's not even remotely true, but come on. I've put off posting about this for nearly THREE weeks now. Well, I'm sick of it. I come here to discuss the ]Dolphins[, not to be redirected to A) "Your system has viruses, download our virus now for a free virus scan!", B) "pdf is opening", C) "Norton has just blocked an attack on your computer", D) "ChinaTV for all your Ramen viewing needs!", or E) popups.

Don't get me wrong, I realize sites need ad revenue, I really do. Flashing seizure-inducing .gif ads created by five year olds are annoying, but I can live with them. I will not, however, put up with incessant virus-laden ads that, though] they pose little threat to [me because I close them and have a good anti-virus program, are a complete nuisance and simply irresponsible to be left on] any decent [site. I have never known a si]te[ with this m]a[ny visitors to be so negligent concerning har]m[ful ads for their users.

There are also those ads on the side of each page that block part of the first po]s[t of every page! Why must] we [put up with all of these! I actually could put up with them, but ]can't [we get rid of the ones that cause popups and/or redirects? There's ]even [ads on here that attempt to immediately download a virus. I could give a ]pass [for the ones that don't do all that and are simply in the way and incredibly unappealing, if there weren't all these others, but this site has BOTH! I think the owner of this site has really dropped ]the ball[on this issue.

Anyways, I'm sure nobody will be so stupid as to post "Upgrade to VIP if you don't like the ads!", will they? :err: I mean, it's obvious I'm complaining about a legitimate failure to protect users from viruses on this site, and not about the fact that there are ads. I don't know, maybe a few people out there do feel that cheapskates like me deserve to be subject to viruses for browsing a forum without ponying up the green.

Also, I'll stick around long enough to see if anyone responds without reading the thread :chuckle:]
