Miami Dolphins don’t want Ryan Tannehill as a ‘running quarterback'

Agreed. Out of the ones mentioned Wilson may turn out to be legit. The others I doubt. I think Luck, Tannehill, and Wilson will be better. To early to tell with Foles.

Foles won't be as good as this year; nobody could be. I haven't watched enough of him to know how much is skill or scheme that is bringing the great numbers, all I know was that having seen Foles and Vick play in that offense, it was obvious to me when Vick was running into the defense repeatedly that Foles was going to do better because he wouldn't take away passing plays by poor awareness.

If true this is more evidence these guys are working under a long term plan. Its looking more and more likely everybody's coming back next season.

This makes sense now officially hearing from the coaches which maybe is why Ryan has taken some of the sacks. They want him to stay in the pocket as much as possible and learn to read defenses.I'm Ok with it and it more than likely will pay off.

That was your interpretation of that article and interview? It's quite clear that they are saying they aren't running run-designed plays for him, nowhere do they infer, even a little bit, that he should stay in the pocket as much as possible. They just don't want to give him designed runs.

I am a huge Tannehill supporter and very optimistic on him, but some of the sacks he takes - some of which are on him (at least 1 a game), are NOT because the coaching staff is telling him to sit in the pocket.

they aren't making him a statue...they just aren't exposing a pocket qb who is damn good in the pocket into a bunch of unnecessary hits and contact...hell he has taken enough in the pocket

smart call

Tennehill has been sacked and hit more than any other QB...not sure staying still in the pocket is really protecting him. I don't want him to be a running QB, but I would like to see them use his athletic ability to get him out of the pocket some. He is one of the best QB's in the NFL while throwing on the move, let him do it.

Well and if that's true, then the 13 more sacks he has this year than last year, with the same number of passing attempts, are not due to a difference in offensive line play.

I would agree with many that the Pitt game was probably the best balance between called runs for the QB, natural scrambles, and pocket passing. It's great that we want to develop THill to read defenses correctly. But he is getting hit a lot this year, and while the offensive line play is to blame for many of those hits, I think THill holds the ball sometimes, and drops his eyes to look at the rush too often.

As far as the Skins ruining RG3 with the way they played him, I am of the opinion that they played him in the only way they could possibly have success. He was never going to be a drop back 3+ read type guy. He is best in a simplistic passing game predicated on the space created by the run threat he creates. Unfortunately for him, his body could not hold up to the beating of getting pounded by dudes twice his size and almost as fast.

That's fine but they really need to get him more protection so he has some time to throw.

Obviously he also needs to work on his long ball accuracy and develop some chemistry with Wallace..

Clay is good and getting better but another good TE would be helpful.

Just because he runs the ball a couple of times doesn't mean he's a running QB. Running isn't the first thing Tannehill looks to do. The offense isn't specifically designed for Tannehill to run as much as he passes. I hope Tannehill does run more if it's there. There's been several times where Tannehilll could have used his legs, but he decided to throw into coverage or take the sack.

Why announce this? The defense can't be sure you won't take off. Even if the intention is to hand the ball off, those read option looks are very effective in freezing and spreading out the defense, particularly near the goal line.

The announcer yesterday had it correct, that Tannehill had one opportunity near the goal line to execute the fake and take off around the end and probably score. I applaud the limited nature of those looks but 2 per game is probably safe and ideal. Tannehill is certainly conservative enough in his choices. I don't think he'll be an idiot like Robert Griffin out there, basically volunteering to get broken in half because he can't sense anything from any direction.

There is nothing in the statement that prohibits Sherman from calling the read option. If an opponent is foolish enough to take that statement like some on this board took it, then the read option play that will probably occur a couple of times a game will be effective.

running 1 or 2 plays a game does not make him a running qb.

if we run him like we did yesterday, he will be fine.

running qbs r rg3, vick, kapernack, wilson, etc.
This . . . when Ryan Tannehill runs with the ball, I'd prefer that it always be a surprise. Yes, opposing teams can watch the film and always keep the possibility in mind, but they can't really justify allocating assignments to effectively defend it if he runs so rarely. IMO, it's better if Ryan is a more pressing threat to pick your secondary apart from the pocket.

This . . . I lean toward believing that and I'm not just being hopeful. There has been evidence of it since preseason.

Agree and I wouldn't be shocked if tannehill runs it this week more times than he has in any prior game.
