Michael Sam: I'd be excited to be drafted by Dolphins

Well, he was SEC defensive player of the year...

So yeah, he's far from a scrub, and Mayock compared him to Trent Cole today, who absolutely killed it for Philly this past year.

Everyone seems to forget all this though.

I know the combine doesn't matter but ....

• 40-yard dash: 4.91 seconds (tied for 18th
• Bench press (225 pounds): 17 reps (tied for 47th/second to last)
• Vertical jump: 25.5 inches (tied for 39th)
• Broad jump: 114 inches (tied for 14th)

As much as many would like this to just go away, it's not going to. Learn to live with it or just ignore any reports or discussions about it.

If only there was a way to filter out thread titles by keyword. Omar Kelly, Michael Sam, etc..

Those people in this thread implying that Sams is a great player... must not see the tape like some scouts nor give credence to the combine.

PRISCO today:

I wrote in my combine notes Saturday that some scouts thought Missouri defensive end Michael Sam, who came out publicly and said he was gay, could go undrafted.. That was from the tape. But his workouts here didn't help. He didn't do well on the bench press and his 40 times were not good for a 261-pound pass rusher. Sam will go late in the draft, but he is far from a quality prospect.

Also, REYNOLDS:

Sam said Monday he was disappointed in his 25 1/2-inch vertical leap (nevermind his 4.91 40). We can understand why.

In 2004, Miami (Fla.) nose tackle Vince Wilfork's vertical was 26 inches at his pro day. Wilfork, the behemoth Pro Bowl lineman for the New England Patriots, was 6-1, 329 during the pre-draft measurements (safe to say he might be up a few pounds, or 10). Last February, eventual No. 1 overall pick Eric Fisher had a 28 1/2 vertical. A reminder -- he's 6-7, 302 and plays offensive tackle.

The vertical and broad jump were not impressive for Sam, nor were they as vital as position workouts. He was tight and stiff in the hips and ankles and kept his head down and chest up through linebacker drills.

The workout proved what Sam showed at the Senior Bowl last month -- that his niche to begin his NFL career will be on special teams and as backup depth who might eventually get time in nickel pass-rushing situations.

Sam needs a great scheme fit to be drafted, which no longer looks like a guarantee. His fourth- or fifth-round grade in a deep draft is an indication he will not be a priority even on the third day.

I hope to god we don't draft him! 17 reps really? He is John Martin of dline and when we cut him we will have to deal with all the drama and bull**** for cutting a gay guy!

I could do 17 reps at 225 in high school weighing 155 lbs.

If all this guy can do is 17 reps we definitely don't need him. It sounds like he skipped some work outs to take on interviews.

I don't care who he likes to have sex with, In a defensive lineman we need strength and quickness....neither of which he has.....

Not running a 4.9 in the 40 and putting up the bar as much as a middle schooler. No thanks

After that terrible combine performance I think Sam would be excited to be drafted by ANY team.

I'm 6'4" 230 lbs and can't put up 225 17 times. I'm not afraid to admit it. It's harder to do, the longer your arms are. That being said...

I'm also willing to admit the following:
-I'm not gay
-I'm not trying to get drafted by an NFL team

I don't see this kid getting drafted. If anything, 7th... maybe 6th rounder.

Good luck, Mike.

If anyone takes him, it's going to be for PR rep. I could see Miami pulling the trigger if he dropped all the way to the 7th or went undrafted. Someone will convince Ross it's a "good idea"

I agree. I got nothing against the guy even if he wants to make his sexual orientation a "thing"... just, the Dolphins have had enough distractions. Let another city handle the media.

^^^^^^THIS^^^^^^^^^^

The last thing the Phins need is more circus. And it's going to be a CIRCUS. My only fear is that the League get involved directly if he drops below a certain point in the draft. And Goddell decides as a penance, the Phins have to take him to prove how they've changed their "culture problem".

If Ireland was still here he'd draft him in the 3rd round, call it a steal on draft day... let him sit for three years, and fragment the locker room, lol.

Ireland. SMH.

p.s. the only thing remarkable about Sams is the media's love for him because he's gay. Period. Any other player posting his numbers and showing his skill level would be a non-entity at the combine.

He's now "Sam, the gay football player"

That's it, Goon. The only thing "special" about him is the fact that the media loves him for one thing: Being gay, in a football culture that is manly and values masculine things that the media can't stand.
