Lombardi just stated that his sources in Miami have told him that "Dean Pees" is now a candidate for an Interview for the open D-Coordinator!!! He claims "To at least pick his brain for what NE does on defense"... but not sure if they will hire him!!!

Given that Bowles seems like our only remaining option at the moment (or was the pick all along, depending on your opinion), I wouldn't mind Pees as our new DC. I could be wrong, but Pees and his defense went against Brady and Co. in practice every day. This may prove a valuable tool against the Patriots for the next few seasons if he has any inside knowledge of NE's ways on offense. At this point, Butler was the sexy pick. But with him seemingly staying in Pitt and Groh/Crennel already elsewhere, Bowles and Pees would not be terrible hires as DC.

I just get the feeling listening to Mike Lombardi that the F/O is fishing for info on Miami and on the teams that the people they interview are from ... i also felt that they just might be holding the person they REALLY want in house!!!

interesting little twist that could play.

at the end of the day, NE gave up less pts than we did. I'm not sure by how much, but we really need to quit being the team in the AFC east who's defense gives up the most points year in and year out.

I hadn't warmed up to bowles yet. I have a hard time believing that if he was the pick all along, we'd be sliding out feet for this long. as it is, CK has him pegged as the DC... I've never been one to disregard CK's opinion, now isn't any different.

I respect Bowles, but Pees was high on Sabans' list ... and we all know how GOOD Saban was with defense...

CK is probably pretty spot on pegging Bowles as the next DC. The FO must have some sort of idea who they want at the spot and that they are trying to, using a cliche here, 'turn over every rock' to make sure the best man for the job is Bowles.

Perhaps they were waiting with the idea that MAYBE a good candidate would become available for hire. Butler's name seemingly came out of nowhere, and to the best of my knowledge, Dean Pees was not expected to leave New England. My point being, the FO is seemingly doing their homework and make sure they don't close the door on a potential surprise hire by prematurely annointing Bowles as DC.

Of course, all of this could just be in theory, but I think IF Bowles is the man for the job, I'm sure there is a valid reason he hasn't been named for the DC position.

Peas wouldn't be too bad. He struggled a bit this year, and struggling was an 11th overall defense. Big problem IMO was the Pats did a very poor job replacing LBs this season and the secondary was very young.

Peas is another guy whome is a highly respected LB coach.

Yes, the man-who-shant-be-named on Finheaven, good ol' Nick Saban:jcane:Yes, love him or hate him, Saban did know his [doody] on defense. If Saban really did hold Pees in high regard, not to mention that Belicheck gave him support as well, then Dean P. has two ringing endorsements from two great defensive minds. Pees I believe was also under contract during Crennel's and Mangini's tenures (can anyone verify or prove this incorrect?) and he has a solid resume behind his name. I can't see why he shouldn't at least be considered for an interview in Miami.

Bowles is a good position coach, and he's done a good job wherever he's been, but Pees has a slightly better resume to his name. It would be a shame if he wasn't even in consideratino for the DC job, or at LEAST an interview.

I might be wrong, but I thought I read a couple of places that Miami is indeed looking for a well-respected LB guru for the position. If there's truth to this, I cannot say for sure. I will say this of Pees, he made due with a lot less talent on NE's defense this year than in those past. Losing Seymour to the Raiders hurt that defense. I thought NE also suffered through multiple injuries on defense (Warren? and others). Also, I think NE alternated b/t 3-4 and 4-3 fronts (I think they played a lot more 4-3 than usual), something they havn't done as much in recent memory. All of these factors make for a challenging job for a DC. Pees did well with what little he had. When were we able to say something like that about Paul Pasqualoni?

Excellent, Excellent call my friend!! :hi5:

I think just like Butler you interview the successful coaches to gain insight. I think Pees is a known coach who could be a LB coach candidate as well as a knowledge source you might as well tap. No downside here in the interview.

they played a lot of 4-3 early in the year when Mayo was hurt. The Pats lost Bruschi,Harrison, Vrabel, and Seymour and traded Ellis Hobbs on draft day. Aside from Hobbs, that's a lot of talent and a lot of leadership. Gary Guyton struggled a bit playing ILB. Adalius Thomas and Derrick Burgess were huge disappointments, as were all 3 of their 2nd round picks this year (Butler made some plays but was a dime back, Chung struggled, Brace was outperformed by 6th rounder Myron Pryor).

In short guys like Merriweather and Mayo, while talented, were not ready to be leaders on the defense.

As for getting LB specialists, I kind of figured. Bill Sheridan is a very good LB coach, has been for awhile. With us letting Edwards and Reid walk with little pursuasion and firing Paul P (who was LB coach at Dallas) told me were focusing on LBs.
