More numbers: Coaching vs QB play vs Talent

Well, I think it was on two people:

1. Mike Sherman and his offensive gameplan
2. Jeff Ireland and the crapshow OL and backs he asked Mike Sherman to work with.

Even though I think #2 was the biggest problem, fact is that I think the coaching staff could have done a lot more to protect the damn franchise instead of GETTING HIM HURT and then throwing him back out there to get beat up some more.

you left out the freezing rain and the wind...which played a big factor in limiting our pass game...our issues have always been the same...oline play run and pass...we just hid em every once in a while...the d would have been straight lethal if the lb play was even solid...as it was we couldn't get teams off the field in critical scenarios a lot...

pretty simple really...that weather with the way we run the ball and how much we must pass to move the ball taxing our crap pass pro and you got a road disaster

especially aginst teams that can run the ball and exploit our lbs which i found to be the case the exploitation part at least on a weekly basis...

Do you think if the staff ran the ball more and had some semblance of a run game he would not have a **** QBR?

the only game i can recall giving the lb a pass grade was the first game against the jets...when they filled gaps and the jets didnt run the qb...other than that i struggle to find another game where the lbs as a unit were solid...just big damn targets for the opposition

Good question. We tend to pass because teams dare us to pass which means conditions should be favorable to pass so it shouldn't have a big effect on passer rating assuming the QB is good and/or the receivers are good.

I decided to compile a list of wins by passer rating to see how Philbin stacks up against other coaches in this regard. I tried to include a hodgepodge of good QBs with what I consider to be bad coaches vs the best coaches.

A few things of note: I've made this comparison before but I think Jim Harbaugh is a modern day Shula so his numbers aren't that surprising to me. Jerry Jones is retarded if he doesn't fire Garrett, I've said he might be worse than Sparano and the numbers seem to indicate that. I have always felt that Philbin is at worst comparible to Marvin Lewis, in that if you give him 10 years to implement his sytem he will have us competitive for at least a spell. Tannehill and Dalton are two peas in a pod as well in my opinion but Dalton has way more games of 100+ passer rating, not sure what to make of that.

All good coaches should win when their QB has a good game, what sticks out to me is most coaches win at close to 100% when their QB has a rating of 100+ but the bad coaches don't have a good record when their QBs rating is in the 90s. One important question is how much impact can a coach have on getting his QBs rating in the 100s more consistently? It seems clear Harbaugh is able to but like I said, he might be the best coach in the league and maybe one of the best of all time. What about personnel, that should definitely have an impact as well. Is that why Dalton has so many more games with a passer rating in the 100s?

These numbers are all from the players last 4 seasons in most cases, what else stands out to you guys?

What you're getting at here is the correlation between QB rating and win percentage, which is 0.62. The correlation between QB rating differential and win percentage is 0.81, and was what Joe Philbin referred to here:

(On how much did your vision involve around a quarterback) "We're going to build a football team, number one. I think obviously the play and performance of a quarterback in the National Football League is obviously very important. One of the things I believe in strongly when you analyze your football team is that you have to look at the quarterback rating differential. So how your guy is performing as opposed to the opposition. So it's certainly a key component in winning football games.
