Multiple Teams: Dolphins Made a "Mega Reach" with JaWuan James

I wouldn't worry about it, OP, Walter Football is one of those sites you click on to read, but take it with a grain of salt. There are dozens like it. I do feel JJ was a reach, but if he turns out to be a great player and stays on the team instead of getting released after his first contract, then it will have been worth it. You have to balance out sites like Walter Football with expert info from respected sources, like Narwaki. Or Gil Brandt even though he's old. Or Russ Lande and Dan Shonka. Lance Zierlein is also a pretty good source when it comes to O line evaluation. JJ did make it on top 50 boards. That fact, with the reality that there was a run on O linemen meant that Hickey was playing it safe. Could he have traded down and still gotten James? Probably. But the Dolphins seemed so stuck on James, so fixated, that they didn't want to risk it. They didn't value Moses or Cyrus or anybody else as much. JJ was what they wanted - a 4 year RT, an excellent pass protector with good measurables, very coachable, with high character. He's a Philbin player.

Bottom line is this is their vision, we have to ride with it. This is going to be a pass-first team. When they picked JJ, I said in the live thread that since their goal is to help Tannehill, and JJ is such a good pass protector, then they need to go out and get a WR or TE in the second round, and they did.

If in 12 months time James has had a nice rookie year, looked the part and protected Tannehill, he'll have improved a terrible OL.

There won't be an asterisk after his name saying 'yeah, but he was a reach'. Nobody will give a damn.

Personally, I find it hilarious that a site can mock the player to us, at the same pick and then write an article a day later calling it a mega reach. That's genius right there.

IMO, he is Koundjio without the medical. good upside.

It was a reach and we could have gotten more picks. Hickey screwed that one.

But in the end it might not even matter. He will start and will do well. As far as the other teams reaches, they dont get talked about. Our guy will start, theirs will not.

Other teams grades don't have a bearing on our picks. We had a huge need and filled it with a solid RT. We had him graded high after several meetings with him. They knew what they were getting and they're happy!!!!

He was a reach we are paying for the BOSS's mistakes and I think if he plays from day one people will forget we could have dropped back and likely got him or Moses and a play maker

Love the Landry pick

Turner is part of the solution to the BOSS's multiple online mistakes as well - nothing left in the cupboard all crappy online hands on deck (not a sexy draft it is a keep qb in one piece draft)

Considering that:
« this "report" originates with a glorified basement-blogging site with a history of Fins uber-criticism to the point where you question whether it's a personal vendetta,

« despite all the other "reaches" including Belicheat's mind-boggle, (especially for less dire need) it's the Fins who were singled out, and

« the particularly vitriolic attack on Hickey, conveniently attributing decision-making powers to him instead of his boss, or before that, boss's boss, smacks of a spurious effort to demonize,

»» unless there's specific attribution to whom at least some of these "sources" are, I've gotta reject this "reporting" as manufactured and "bogus bull****," -seemingly just conveniently low-hanging fruit that reeks of a familiar agenda.

Just because that old adage of "don't attack the messenger for the message" may occasionally be valid, personally I've never prescribed to it as an absolute truism, especially when it comes to the bastardization of "news" and the quest for it to be "different & fresh" in today's accessible and largely undifferentiated social media. So in this case, unless they can furnish specific teams and names, it's proper to attack them in the same way a STD carrier should be attacked for delivering that particular "message":idk:

We picked him. The only thing I care about now is that he earn the pick.

exactly this...so sick of "fans" trashing this pick before the guy has even played one down in the NFL...can we give him a season before we declare this pick a failure? Hickey too

If James becomes a pro bowl rt then its a great pick. Time will tell.

James was undervalued by the media and is a very solid pick. I think at #19 he was a reach, but I'm not so sure he makes it out of R1 is Miami goes in another direction there. The goal of this offseason is clearly to give Tannehill time in the pocket. When your qb is facing pressure on three step drops you know the offensive line is bad.

Honestly, I would have taken Brandin Cooks at #19 as I think he could emerge as an elite player in the slot. But looking at how the draft is shaping up, it's a good start for Miami. Landry is a player. I love the Turner pick. Overall, the offense looks a lot better on paper.

I've read on another Dolphins blog, that Arizona, Cincinnati and Carolina all had their eyes on James with their 1st round picks. IF True, James was not a reach.

The logic is weak with this one. Its not a GMs job to know, or even care, which teams have him rated lowest, if we want the player its his job to know which teams may have him rated highest.

The Eagles wanted Russell Wilson in the third, if they knew the Oakland Raiders GM had a 6th round grade on him would that have done them any good?
