Good chance he takes Jordan's role the first 4 weeks. Then we'll have an extremely tough decision on our hands when Jordan is set to come back...

Isn't McCain a LB?

Isn't Jordan a DE?

It's not that I don't love everything I see out of Tripp. He look like a natural LB out there. But he looks like he still lacks the strength to play regular downs at LB and consistently get off blocks

and WHEELER can? i personally dont think tripp has as many holes right now as some think, and the ones he does have he needs to be ON the field to work out. and lets face it, who has the higher ceiling, the older no talent wheeler or the young buck who has flashed EVERY game and every camp practice?

i say go with the young guy who has the potential. and i dont have a problem having mccain taking ellerbe's spot either at this point. i dont judge vets to harshly with un inspired pre season play, especially in the first two, but, ellerbe seems like there is something thats happened to him fundamentally. his rep was being a sure tackler and strong at the point but i have seen that errode in big chunks this past season and this pre season.

i see a lb group of mccain-misi-tripp much SOONER than later. the future looks bright!!

McCain said he wore the #40 at Cal in honor of Pat Tillman...respect.

wow!! i hadnt heard that.

CHRIS McCAIN just became my favorite dolphin. this is not thug. this guy seems to be a kid who just needs to get rid of old ghetto homies and surround himself with positive, productive people which he seems to be doing with he and tripp bonding so well. good sign!! and he hasnt been in any trouble for a good while.

and i read somewhere that hickey and the coaches were truly convinced he had taken himself on a new path, it was genuine and they signed him up.

no more gangsta homies and mccain is a dolphin for many, many years to come. good for him! its always great to see a talented kid with a HUGE future turn it around before its to late.

I hope you are right ktown.

McCain's athletic talents were never in question. If he has matured and continues to be stable and not a problem for he coaching staff, then I fully expect him to start for us ... next year.

The reason I say next year is because when a kid with this much talent has issues that causes him to be kicked out of multiple places ... and that kind of physical ability goes undrafted, there is a very real risk that he may do it again. Maybe not now, while he is fighting for a spot on the roster, but after he has earned a starting spot, is entrenched in the team, and we have built around him ... that's when he is the biggest risk to start acting out, thinking his more important than his coaches or th team, and making life tough for the staff and himself.

My guess is that while they will put him in situations to see his level of ability during the preseason, they will be strongly inclined to keep him on the bench until they are convinced he has matured. Otherwise, it may blow up in their faces like an Acme dynamite kit.

I have not seen a single place or evaluator who said McCain lacked physical ability. Every single one said he has size, length, quick and speed. He understands how to use his long levers (something Jordan can't seem to figure out), and he is a monster moving forward.

Physically, his only issue is he might need a tad more muscle depending non where he is played. Skill wise he needs experience reading and reacting and a lot of work on pass coverage. He is better going forward in pursuit or rushing. But everyone agrees the kid has natural ability few athletes have.

The question for McCain is whether he can learn to permanently sublimate his ego to the will of the coaching staff and good of the team?

That takes time to prove.

We all had a wild side we had to mature out of, at that age. Some of the best defensive player around has that wild side that has to be controlled, but I would rather have a players that has a little baggage than one who lacks the drive to be great. Will some of them get kicked out of the league?? Sure, but I would still rather take my chances with them.

If he becomes an important part of the team, this is where a guy like Cam Wake needs to step up and take the kid under his wing and tell Pouncey to stay away from him, especially when he's looking for buddies to take to the clubs.

Just for reference the last few Uber talented players that Hickey gave a shot were WR Mike Williams who was dismissed from Syracuse, Lagaroutte Blount who hit someone, and Carl Nicks who Hickey's front office gave a big free agent contract.

So far McCain looks pretty good, but bear in mind it took a while for those other 3 to implode as well, so the smart money may be on taking th cautious approach.

KT, sure you want to replace Shelly with McCain? :)

No it isn't Landry, but he is a rookie this year. I told you guys when we signed Chris McCain that he was going to start moving up the depth chart by the middle of preseason and push for a starting spot by opening week. Everyone thought I was crazy and could only talk about Tripp. But let me tell ya this kid has been a nightmare since his days as a Nighthawk for Northern Guilford up here in NC. The night hawks won 3 straight championships before getting that streak broken last year. They have put out some great talent considering the school was only founded in 2007. Keenan Allen played with McCain on some of the championship teams and a kid named TJ Logan will be the starting RB for UNC this year.

But as for McCain, this kid was a absolute beast in HS and carried that over to college. You could see his burst in college, he was very raw but was unblockable. He is the exact opposite of Jordan. Jordan has all the gifts in the world but no motor. I said the night we drafted him that his bust potential was very high because he didn't strike me as someone with the passion to be great. Every interview I saw just proved that more and more. I can't see Jordan as ever being a great player, but I will tell you right now Chris McCain WILL.

I haven't been this excited about a player since I was laughed off this board for saying before we brought in Cam Wake that he had the potential to lead the league in sacks. Mark it down, Chris McCain will be starting by the end of the year, and most likely long before that. He is very intelligent and has decided to put 100% of his energy into football for the first time in his football life. Hang on to your hats boys, he is gonna be a whirlwind.

http://www.miamidolphins.com/multim...s_McCain/70712160-b902-43e8-8275-ff2043333107 Here is a great video of him talking today. You can't help but notice the confidence. Most rookies are trying to keep their confidence up to stay positive, this dude is talking about how he is struggling to not get OVER confident. Wait and see, this guy is gonna make a name for himself. :hump:

It's funny...I just read the thread in May when we signed him.....you were the last poster in the thread...and you never mentioned this love for McCain or how you were high on him?

Just when did you decide he was this good?

mccains not an every down lb at this stage...he's learning how to play off the los...needs time...you'd get more bang for your buck if you played him in specific scenario packages

If Hickey pulls out 2 starting LBs in one year from a 5th round pick and an UDFA, it's safe to say he's legit.

It already seems like he's hitting on starters and good backups with all other picks. Gotta see how it goes long term, but you can definitely feel this years picks and UDFAs have really energized this team and moved us over a giant hump. They've given us potential and options.

So far, Hickey is proving to be worthy of some love.

you could throw mccain to the wolves and just let him learn on the fly with the understanding that you are gonna take some massive lumps in the process (not much different than the lumps we take with other starting lbs i fully admit) and bet on the upside but you are probably better off to work him in gradually and let him learn the scheme and responsibilities off the los before you do it...right now he's ready to play at the los and attack no doubt but there's so much more to playing a sound lb...

Nicks' issues were beyond his control, weren't they?

As for Williams and Blount, TB got great value out of each - give their draft position.

I'd rather put in McCain and have him implode than watch Wheeler play like an asshole.
