Hands down, these are two rebuilding teams.
We should know the following after tonights game.
1) How well these QBs have adjusted to the new Offensive Schemes.
A) Additionally, we should be able to see if A.J. has gotten rid of his happy feet...and if he's gotten over his "receiver-lock-syndrome". If he has shaken lose of these bad habits, then this is a huge plus to our value in terms of offensive potential.
B) It will also answer the question mark that is Gus Frerotte. Is he starter worthy? His stats for Philly were decent, but can he lead a team? How strong is his arm in comparison to A.J. We've all read the reports, but there is just something about seeing a QB in the huddle that tells you more than a computer screen can.
**Noteworthy--We must understand that Chicago will probably not play a lot of defensive starters (just as we shouldn't)...so we can't think our QBs are as good as they look tonight. That being said, if they light up the D as any good QB should, then that still means great things for us.
2) We should see a lot of RW and Gordon, which means we'll see how our O-line communicates and implements. We all know that these backs are good, with RW being great as we remember him, but with a new O line and O line coach, we should be able to see how they pick up blocks and doubles. We know these backs can find holes, no doubt, but can they do it when they are the isolated offensive threat? These teams will be gearing up for our run, with the occasional chambers/mcmichael threat, so we must be efficient and disciplined in this area.
I think the dolphins defensively manhandle my old Flordia QB, Grossman, by taking away his length of time in the pocket. I've seen him on the roll and he's deadly ( I mean deadly in college), but he's no runner. He was good before his injury last year. Jones was allowed to run all over the opposing defenses, but when grossman went down...so did Jones' production. So we know they can put up some numbers...I'm seeing some Muhammed(sp) connections, but we should do well with stopping the run...JUST AS LONG AS WE DON'T GET TOO OVERAGGRESSIVE!!! This is going to be key to us becoming the "wall" we've been known for. Taylor and Thomas know this, but with the addition of Seau, we got crazy last year a couple times and the other teams blew it open. We need to be controlled and patient. I've watched crowder and roth a lot in college...a lot...and they both have great instincts, but they can be a tad overzealous...which means that a screen pass or a Play action can eat us up in they bite too hard. Hopefully the vets will keep them cool and calm. I'm stoked to see our defensive LBs and Line this year. They are damn good. Crowder was a steal and roth is a monster. Add that to a Taylor and Thomas and it's scary in there. Hopefully injuries don't happen. Moving on...
3) Last and final thing, will be our deep threat. I know we have outstanding WRs this year...we do...but some of their reputation is based on paper results. Boston and Booker have yet to produce on the field for the Dolphins. Chambers has been the best I've ever seen at times. Seriously. That's not homerism, that's me jogging the memory back to some of the miraculous catches he's made, i.e. the one handed grab at the back of the endzone as he's being hit out and still managing to grab his two feet in. That was one of Fiedler's passes that Chambers elevated the status of. But on the other hand, against shut down corners, ie pats, broncos, jets...he's been out of the game. It's either focus or lack of a QB talent to put the ball where it needs to be, but in my mind, he could become more of a Go-to if he laid it out on every play. So with that, we need to show that A) our receivers are capable of beating people deep and B)we need to be able to get the ball to a receiver that breaks it open and C) our WRs need to prove that they have the "it" factor to grab it from the DBs...not to wait on the pass or allow it to be defended...be a gamebreaker like we know you are.
These are the question marks that I hope will be answered on tonights game. I know there are numerous others, such as our secondary effectiveness, Mare's health, Browns contract, new Offense/defense coordinators and schemes...but I don't think one game...especially against chicago...will help to answer these. Thanks for listening guys.
